since upgrading to F26, 'ps' will wedge the entire OS
by Lonni J Friedman
Greetings,
I've been running Fedora since the Fedora Core days. About 11 days
ago, I upgraded my x86_64 system from 25 to 26. Prior to upgrading to
26, I was running 25 for over 6 months without any stability issues.
Since the upgrade to 26, something inspecting the process list is
wedging the OS. The problem isn't even obvious until I happen to run
'ps' and the command hangs indefinitely, and can't be killed.
However, at that point, the load avg takes off, and just keeps
climbing over time. The system is still mostly responsive, but
clearly its very unhappy about something. I'm able to check 'dmesg'
as well as /var/log/messages while its in the bad state, and there's
nothing new in either, and definitely nothing bad, unusual or
suspicious. Unfortunately, I can't even shutdown/reboot gracefully at
this point, as anything & everything that wants to inspect the process
list also hangs, and so the system never fully shuts down (I waited a
full hour the first time hoping that eventually it would proceed). I
have to hit RESET and then (thankfully) the system boots up just fine
again.
The first hang happened about 28 hours after upgrading to 26. Things
were fine after that for just over 9 days of uptime when the same
thing happened all over again.
I've tried googling to see if there's any one else running into this,
and didn't find much. This was the closest thing, but its over a year
ago:
https://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-310268.html
At this point, I'm wondering whether anyone:
0) recognizes this as a known bug
1) has any ideas how to debug it further
thanks!

how to substitute mariadb to mysql while compiling
by François Patte
Bonjour,
I try to compile gerbera in order to test this dlna server. There is an
option to have mysql as a database but, mysql no longer exists on
fedora, so if I activate this option, the compilation fails.
Is there a way to substitute mariadb?
Thank you for any help.

Accessing KRB5 NFS from local system accounts
by Gordon Messmer
I recently noticed that spamassassin (running as the local "daemon"
account) will hang some of the time when processing messages, and
tracked it to the process attempting to access
~user/.spamassassin/user_prefs. I believe that should return an access
failure, but sometimes the process stalls instead.
In any case, I'd like to allow access, but my understanding is that
processes without a Kerberos ticket cannot access an NFS4 filesystem
with sec=krb5. Is that correct? If so, how would I allow a local
system account to access globally readable files? Should I create a
keytab, and set KRB5_KTNAME in the spamassassin environment?
Does anyone working with NFS and krb5 have any tips?

Looking for slide show softwares on autonomous machine
by jeandet
Hello all,
In my lab I installed a machine connected to a big screen on which we
present news.
This machine is supposed to be as much autonomous as possible. So I
chose impressive as PDF player but it seems that after few hours it
crashes because of a fatal error in XWayland.
Starting it from gnome + Xorg doesn't change anything.
I'm running Fedora 27+Gnome+Wayland.
So my question is, anyone knows others softwares I can start from bash
with options to put in full screen plus time between slides?...
Gnome-document looks good but it doesn't seems to be possible to do
that from bash.
Best regards,
Alexis.

Difficulties building Fedora ISOs
by Nicklaus McClendon
Hello all,
I'm attempting to build a Fedora 26 ISO, but I'm having difficulties
with the instructions listed here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_create_a_Fedora_install_ISO_for_tes...
Unfortunately, they fail when attempting to spawn a shell, with the
following error message:
/var/lib/mock/fedora-26-x86_64/root/dev is pre-mounted and
pre-populated. If a pre-mounted /dev is provided it needs to be an
unpopulated file system.
mknod(/var/lib/mock/fedora-26-x86_64/root/dev/null) failed: File exists
Is there a work around/another way to build an iso?
Thanks,
kulinacs

Boot stops with blank screen on fc27 and graphical boot
by Alex
Hi,
I have a fc27 system that I just upgraded from fc26. I've been having
a problem for the last five or six kernels (three months, maybe) where
booting the default kernel results in the system booting to a blank
screen and being unresponsive. No mouse activity, no ability to reach
it from a remote system.
So this has been going on with fc26 before the upgrade to fc27 as well.
I'm an experienced Linux admin, but not familiar with the new graphical boot.
If I boot into runlevel 3 then run "systemctl isolate
graphical.target" it starts wayland normally.
I'm not sure what information to provide to help troubleshoot this. I
can't tell what the last boot message printed is before the screen
goes blank. I also don't see anything in messages or boot.log because
it only shows the most recent boot.
I believe it's somehow related to the kernel because it boots properly
with an old rescue kernel.
Anticipating this being a display problem, here is the output from
lspci of my video controller and xorg packages.

Evolution and network proxy
by martin.wagner@mailbit.io
Hi
I'm trying to set up an IMAP account in Evolution (3.24.6-1.fc26) that would connect through a network proxy. I've also have other IMAP accounts in Evolution so I just want this one account to go through a proxy. I thought it would just be to go to Network Preferences and define a custom proxy, but it doesn't work. Evolution displays a question mark next to the account. What I did was to define a Socks Proxy at localhost:9050 and tag this one account to use it. I know that the proxy works fine, because if I tell Gnome to use it in All Settings -> Network that for example Firefox uses that proxy.
Am I missing something here?

cups-browsed regression?
by David A. De Graaf
I've freshly installed Fedora 27 on two machines; neither have a
printer directly connected, but rely on cups-browsed to display the
LAN's printers that are attached to, and managed by other (F26) machines.
Not any more. cups-browsed seems to have lost its ability to detect
automatically those network printers. Is anyone else seeing this? Or
have I screwed up, somehow?
For earlier Fedoras I've edited /etc/cups/cups-browsed.conf to add:
BrowseAllow 192.168.2.0/24
to restrict browsing to my LAN, but now there's a comment
# If there are no "Browse..." lines at all, all servers are accepted.
so that edit shouldn't be necessary. I've tried with and without it,
but F27 browsing still fails.
In the system-config-printer GUI I can still click thru a bunch of steps
to search for and find those network printers. And then use them. But
that's tedious and much less useful than the previous totally automatic
availability of all printers across the LAN.
Is this a regression?
