[FC8] ssh and CAC card???

From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Apache and umask for document root

Hi, I've set up a virtual host for a joomla website and having some permissions problems. I've seen numerous configurations online about how to set umask for the apache user, but none have worked, including creating a systemd file (/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/httpd.service) with the following: [Unit] Description=The Apache HTTP Server After=network.target remote-fs.target nss-lookup.target [Service] Type=notify Environment=LANG=C Umask=0006 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -DFOREGROUND ExecReload=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -k graceful # Send SIGWINCH for graceful stop KillSignal=SIGWINCH KillMode=mixed PrivateTmp=true [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target The problem is that the files are owned by the joomla user, but also need to have access (both read and write) to be able to modify some files within the document root. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to set umask for the apache user? I'm also interested in recommended permissions settings for the joomla document root. Thanks, Alex

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? Install on Zotac Zbox CI327?

Hello there, (after a looong time not using Fedora, just back to it!) I've tried installing Fedora on a Zotac Zbox CI327 (Intel Celeron N3450 inside) but this happens to fail. I've tried F25 but it has not the right kernel to make it (I've read about 4.10 minimum), then tried F26-Alpha-1.7 Live and Rawhide-20170518 Live but none could reach the graphical login. They both boot, some steps take a lot of time and I end up in a state I don't understand but which is not friendly ;-). How to turn on networking from rescue boot

So... I did a "sudo dnf upgrade" and things seemed to do well. However, when I rebooted, it hangs on bootup with the statment "Holding until bootup processes complete" or something like that -- I'm doing this from memory. I tried with a couple of older kernels, but they also hung. I assume that this is some transient thing associated with the upgrade. Over the years, I've had glitches appear on an upgrade and disappear on the next upgrade. Accordingly, I'd like to boot into rescue mode and see if I can upgrade again. However, I've forgotten how to turn on wifi networking from rescue mode. Can anybody point me to a tutorial? Thanks, billo

suspends shutdowns system instead of suspending

Hi, A new bug has cropped up on my system Dell Precision 5510 running Fedora 25 Plasma Desktop. Anytime I suspend my device it shutdowns and obviously I lose all my unsaved work. I have tried all the kernel currently installed on my system 4.10.10-200.fc25.x86_64, 4.10.9, and 4.10.8. I have also tried downgrading systemd to systemd-231-10.fc25.x86_64. F26 update: gnome-terminal doesn't launch; locale issues

I just did an update from F25 to F26 via dnf. After it boots, I can no longer start gnome terminal (nothing shows). If I ssh into the machine and try it remotely, I see the following: $ gnome-terminal (process:3586): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale. Error constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.Terminal: Timeout was reached So it looks like there is a locale issue in my update. Does anyone know how to fix this?

how to correctly log without journald (and its blobs)?

In previous Fedora distros was (IMHO) right way to log only to syslog, without journald and its (for me) unwanted annoying binary logs, by using configuration as: *) Set systemd log target to syslog: systemd.log_target=syslog (syslog-or-kmsg) ---- on kernel cmdline systemd.default_standard_output=syslog --/ and LogTarget=syslog ---- in systemd.conf DefaultStandardOutput=syslog --/ *) configuring rsyslog to listen on /dev/log unix socket: $SystemLogSocketName /dev/log ------ in rsyslog.conf $ModLoad imuxsock ----/ $OmitLocalLogging off ---/ $AddUnixListenSocket /run/systemd/journal/syslog --/(legacy directives) $AddUnixListenSocket /run/systemd/journal/socket -/ $AddUnixListenSocket /run/systemd/journal/stdout / (not sure when all last three directives needed) *) prevent to run journald: systemctl mask systemd-journald.service (and maybe mask systemd-journal-flush.service) And it works fine. But in actual Fedora 24 in systemd man page values syslog-or-kmsg and syslog are missing in LogTarget option. As systemd/journald man pages say hardly anything about exact mean of appropriate configuration for this purpose, then please when someone more knowledgeable can advise: - where to direct the systemd output? Maybe to kmsg an then read it in rsyslog via imklog? (rsyslog should have also imkmsg module, but is not in rsyslog-8.12.0-3.fc24) - what about /run/log/journal/.../system.journal ? On my test F24 system it have open rsyslogd, abrt-dump-journal-oops and abrt-dump-journal-xorg (no need for these last two) processes. Uses it also something else? - what about /run/systemd/journal/{dev-log,socket,stdout} unix sockets? Should rsyslogd listen on them? - /dev/log seems be now symlink to /run/systemd/journal/dev-log socket (as defined by systemd-journald-dev-log.socket) Should it be left (because now something sends to /run/systemd/journal/dev-log), or can be /run/systemd/journal/dev-log removed? how to (re-?)construct grub menu?

Good afternoon, I found out the rather hard way what caused those boot failure problems that were the subject of a threat starting last month. After my weekly "dnf upgrade" last Thursday, I checked my root e-mail, and found the hard drive had 8 bad sectors, then 16 bad sectors. A smartctl short test showed several parameters "pre-fail", and the others "old-age". I obtained a new drive. My Cray Research friend gave me a USB stick with "Clonezilla-Live-Version" on it. That duplicated the old hard drive onto the new one, but apparently not 100%. After the old drive was removed and the new drive installed, I could not boot. The system was being put into a grub shell(?). (It displayed the "grub> " prompt.) After beating out heads against the wall (or the phone), my Cray research friend gave me another USB stick with "Boot-Repair-Disk" on it. That rebuilt a grub file, but not correctly. But at least I got a grub menu when booting, and I was able to edit the shell that the grub menu entry would run. I had to take the "efi" off the commands "linuxefi" and "initrdefi". That allows me to boot up Fedora. But the menu is missing an entry for windows, and I still have to edit that script every time. I want the grub menu to offer the three most recent patches of Fedora, the most recent Fedora rescue shell, and windows-7, in that order. (This is a dual-boot system.) And I want the shells launched by the menu entries to be correct. How do I get that accomplished - the correct Fedora-25 way? If it matters, the motherboard uses UEFI bios. Thank-you in advance. Running local SSH as background process - possible??

Ok guys, I know this isn't strictly "Fed" related, but the group might have suggestions. My use case, the process has a number of remote servers. I'd like to be able to run a bunch of commands on the remote servers as fast as posible. The initial thought was to loop through the different IPAddresses, and SSH into each server, to run the commands. However, this process was still "sequential" in that each SSH session needs to complete, prior to running the next server/ssh command. So, my question/need -- is to figure out how to run a ssh as a background on the local server. This approach would/should allow the process to quickly fire off commands to the remote ipaddresses/servers in a much faster/parallel manner. sortof: foreach iplist as ipaddress ssh user1@ipaddress command & (assuming that the '&' runs the local ssh in the background -- it doesn't!) Running "stuff" on the remote can occur in a "Screen" session, which would allow the ssh process to fire off the remote cmd, but it still doesn't run the local ssh as a "background" process.. Rick has mentioned/discussed the "Screen" function in past threads. Thoughts/comments....

Openvpn start fails on reboot

If I reboot my F24 system, openvpn server fails to properly start but a subsequent manual systemctl start openvpn@server does succeed. Fedora-26: KDE Scrollbars no longer have arrows at their ends

Just upgraded from f25 to f26. Most programs run better, but scrollbars no longer have arrows at their upper and lower ends. System Settings used to have a function to control this, but it seems to be gone, both in native KDE and Gnome applications. How are scrollbars now controlled in KDE? Thanks - jon

I have enabled html5, and yet youtube claims Browser does not currently recognize any of video formats available Click here to visit our frequently asked questions about HTML5 video. When I do click on "Click here ....etc" I get the same page tat I access directly with the URL https://www.youtube.com/html5 and it shows The HTML5 player is currently used when possible. For a sample live video, I clicked on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtU_mdL2vBM just in case you wanted to know what I clicked on. Thanx!!

So long nouveau

Well I've been using my newly installed fedora 26 boot partition for all of a half day, and the nouveau driver just completely froze up the display (exactly the same thing that happened on fedora 24 with nouveau). I guess I'm off to look through the logs for any info and then install the rpmfusion nvidia binaries.

compiling dahdi-linux kernel module

The dahdi kernel module (used by asterisk for some Digium telephony cards, including the one I have) is not included in Fedora because it is not free software. The dahdi configuration tools are included, but not the kernel module. The software is free as in beer, it can be downloaded and built, and I have successfully done that in the past. However, the last time the kernel module compiled successfully was back at kernel-4.6.3-300.fc24.x86_64 . Print crossword puzzle -

This is a new install, updated, Fedora-26 using XFCE, however I believe the problem began with Fedora-24. I print several puzzles every day usin Firefox, puzzles presented in pdf print without any trouble, however those that require Flash stop working when the Fedora print window pops up, it looks normal but does not display/recognize my printer, the printer name is missing/blank. I am forced to use SeaMonkey to print the flash sites such as: http://puzzles.usatoday.com/ Using Firefox the line that says "Print to Printer:" simply shows "No Printer." SeaMonkey shows the printer and prints. It seems Firefox should do the same and it used to ... I've googled this extensively but never come near finding an answer. I would prefer not having to use a second browser to print puzzles. tried VMware Wkst. 12.5.6, also 12.5.7 ... no change ... even the hack to get the additional virtual network interfaces, nothing helped ... maybe the next release of VMware Wkst. 12.5.8 will run ... as VMware Wkst. is essential for me, there is no way having Linux instead of Windows; the decision to try it with Fedora is the feature of inplace upgrade and keep it up-to-date ... I'll keep my old windows running as log as the hardware is working ...

I have managed to hose something in my account. In Fedora 24 about 2/3 of the time when I login the only item in Computer was "File System" and inserted media (CD/USB) neither mounts or appears. The other 1/3 of the time it worked. Not good. But the clock is ticking on F24 now so I updated to Fedora 25 and it got worse. I get entries for every mount point, tmp, sys, everything plus I get desktop icons for them all too. This is on Mate if you are wondering why I have icons on the desktop. But at least it is now consistent, it happens every time. Made a fresh account and logged into it and everything works normally. Tried a couple of times and it appears reliable. So whatever is wrong it is just in my account but I can't figure out what got corrupted. Google is little help, all the automagic plumbing has been rewritten so many times most hits are to pages discussing obviously wrong things. While logged out I have tried removing .gvfs, anything suspicious in ~/.config ~/.local, like gvfs-metadata, systemd/user, .ccache, .dbus, Even looked in /var/tmp for leftover cruft. So what file does control the current automagic stuff? Upside is I have finally seen accelerated 3d/video decode in a VM without a Kaboom so as usual, upgrading brings new shiny.

ddns stopped working after F26 update

I have a dhcod/bind combination working very nicely registering host name from DHCP into DNS. But after the update to F26 ddns stopped working. I see no error messages but did notice that my named update log file no logger sees any messages logged into it. Is this a known problem? Or do I need to investigate more? Barry

This computer runs Fedora 25 on /dev/sdb and Fedora 26 on /dev/sda. I use the boot menu to select the drive and system I want, it defaults to Fedora 26. VM on Fedora 25 has Windows 10 running on it. How do I move that to virt-manager on the Fedora 26 system? Or is it simpler to make a new installation? KDE Discover (Software Center) Crashes

Whenever I exit plasma-discover, which shows in the KDE start menu as the "Software Center", my system reports a crash. There don't seem to be any harmful effects, apart from the message itself. Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone know what is the reason for the crash or how to prevent it? Thanks - jon

Hello, When I tar a folder, I wish to exclude the cache files Hence, I try to use tar --exclude-caches-all But it seems that the directory need to be tagged by a file CACHEDIR.TAG It looks like that any of my files are tagged. find . -name CACHEDIR.TAG | sed -e 's/[/]CACHEDIR.TAG$//g' >/tmp/excludes provides an empty file. How can I manage CACHEDIR.TAG ? It has come to my attention that some entities are claiming that you, dear Linux Hackers, (1)need to go through some foundation or get some permission from upon high in-order to sue the progenitors of GRSecurity for their violation of section 6 of the terms underwhich the linux kernel is distributed (version 2 of the GPL). And, furthermore, that (2)this foundation has no intention of bringing such a suit. (1) is false. (2) may very well be true. You do have standing to sue GRSecurity for their blatant continuing copyright violation if GRSecurity has made a derivative work of your code contribution to the Linux Kernel as-long as (a)you have not assigned your copyrights, and (b)you are not a work-for-hire. How do you know if you are a work for hire or if you have signed away your copyrights? If you are working for a company and as your job duties you are programming the linux kernel, there is a good chance that you are a work for hire and thus the company owns said copyrights. How do you know if you signed away your copyrights? Well if you singed a document transferring ownership of your copyrights for the code you produced at some point. If you are not working for a company while hacking linux and you haven't assigned your copyrights away then YOU OWN YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS. This means most of you hobby hackers, if GRSecurity has modified your code, YES YOU HAVE STANDING TO SUE. Yes your "betters" are lying to you. You have individual separate standing to sue. Yes you SHOULD consult a lawyer of your own. Yes you SHOULD consider a joint filing with other individual rights-holders willing to bring suit against GRSecurity for their blatant violation of your terms, and yes you should consider starting CLASS ACTION since the number of Linux Kernel Contributors seemingly numbers in the multitudes upon multitudes upon multitudes. And yes, I am an attorney. But no, I'm not looking for clients. Just correcting some false information that has been spreading. And yes, GRSecurity will try to claim that the linux-kernel is a work of Joint ownership (so as to shield themselves via procedural law) and yes they will try to claim fair use (probably de minimus), and yes your Lawyer will have to respond to these claims. The Joint ownership claim will go down quickly but it will have to be responded to. De minimus Fair Use depends on how much code is modified and how signifigant the modifications are. Don't let anyone but your own legal council dissuade you from bringing suit: Remember the statute of limitations is only a few years, so the clock is ticking on the CURRENT violation. Also make sure you register your copyright of the version of the linux-kernel that GRSecurity is using in its violation prior to bringing suit. The registration must be for the specific version. F24 problems with ttyUSB0

Recently I have been having problems with ttyUSB0. I use a USB/tty adapter to connect to my cubieboard for my armvhl work. It worked fine for a long time with F24 using: screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200 Now it works after F24 boot just fine. But if I unplug the dongle, suspend, then resume, when I plug the dongle in, no /dev/ttyUSB0. :( How can I go about trouble shooting this. I will get to F26 sometime soon; just not right now. (If that will make and difference, though wonder why) thanks

I once had it all figured out, reducing journald to just a proxy that forwarded everything to syslog and kept no storage of its own. Now I see the new version of rsyslog in fedora26 comes with a new and improved config file syntax that is totally opaque. Before I spend the next week trying to learn how the devil to configure rsyslog these days, I thought I'd ask: Has anyone on fedora 26 figured out how to get journald to just forward everything to rsyslog which then writes the kind of plain text files God intended? (And leaves no binary journal files anywhere on my system).

regionset for DVD playback and ripping

Everyone: Does anyone here have experience using the program "regionset" to change the region code on a DVD player? Specifically, has anyone tried to make a drive region-free (region code 0)? And if so, with what result? The problem: I have a boxed set of DVD's, 12 in all, from Region 2. I live in Region 1. A few versions of Fedora back (probably F21 or F22), I found I could play back those Region 2 disks without a problem. But now with F26, playback even on the "vlc" program gives me sound, but no picture--a black screen. Dragon refuses to play them at all. The makemkv program takes about ten minutes trying to do a workaround with the region codes not matching. Then it seems to work, but the output files all have sound (including all sound tracks if it has more than one), but no picture. The way I see it, I can do one of two things, if I want to rip those disks: 1. Use regionset to change my DVD and BD drive temporarily to Region 2, rip the disks, then go back to Region 1. 2. Purchase and install a second optical-disk drive and use regionset to set /that/ to Region 2 and /leave it there/. The second option would cost me about $50 US. The larger problem is this: I don't necessarily want to limit myself to any one region. If I had to pick one "secondary region," it would be 2 because that includes Europe, the Middle East (including Israel), South Africa, and Japan. But if I want to play or rip a DVD from Australia, then I'm out of luck. The /really/ big hack would be to set my present optical drive to Region 0, and hope that would play any disk, from any region. But before I do something that could fry the drive forever, I would like someone to tell me whether he's ever done that before. The only alternative is to shell out $600 US for a multi-region Blu-ray and DVD player. I would like to avoid that--mainly because I would like to avoid shelling out a lot of payola for a device having an esoteric feature I might use only once in a blue moon! Especially since I fully expect optical media to become obsolete in another ten years. Any suggestions? Anecdotes? Horror stories? Temlakos

Fedora 26 (Live) on Dell XPS 15 9560

Hello there, I'm trying to boot from a F26 Live CD (on a flash drive) on a brand new Dell XS 15 9560, but it sticks after "Started Virtualization daemon", then no move. The media is verified OK. I tried w/ "quiet" boot option, it gets more verbose, with "norhgb" but no luck. How could I get more info about what prevent from booting? Any hint? Regards, -- wwp

Fedora 26 small issues with Asus Zenbook UX306U

Hi, I run Fedora 26 maybe since Alpha release on my Zenbook and in between Alpha and Beta I lost backlight control from gnome shell and /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness. Then after 4.11.3 kernel I wasn't able to boot anymore, I discovered that switching to CSM mode solved the problem it also restored the backlight control from /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness but still not from gnome shell. Updating BIOS didn't help. Does anyone got similar troubles? Did you solve them? Best regards, Alexis.

livecd-iso-to-disk issue

I have an 8GB USB 3.0 key drive on which I want to install F26 Live with room for an overlay and a home directory. I used livecd-iso-to-disk --format --reset-mbr --overlay-size-mb 2048 Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-26-1.5.iso /dev/sda and that does nothing and returns no error or status message, just a prompt. I have discovered that it is the --overlay-size-mb option that causes the no-op return. Without that, the command behaves as expected, prompting me to confirm that all data on the drive will be destroyed. Anyone else experienced this? Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug? AcrobatReader under Fedora26.

Hi all, I got a little problem : I did an upgrade Fedora25 to Fedora26. Everything seems to functionate perfect ; Except one application. The Acrobatreader does not react anymore and trying to install it with AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i486linux_enu.rpm is not succesfull. I can open the .pdf files without problems by using p.e. the documentviewerand other Fedora26 utilities. Is there a solution for this problem ? Hello, Does anybody know the best way to upgrade from Fedora 25 LXDE to Fedora 26 LXQt? I've not found an upgrade path documented anywhere. I'm not concerned about leaving configuration data behind, but would like to clean up unnecessary packages after the transition. Rebuilding with F26 LXQt and restoring from a backup isn't a viable option for me. Can anyone tell me how to get kernel-headers-4.11.8-200.fc25.x86_64 ? Why? Long story. Short version: my Intel 8265 wireless card is unstable with kernel-4.11.9 and 4.11.10. With 4.11.8 it is not. But since I have 4.11.10 installed on my system (with 8, and 9) the kernel-headers are also at 4.11.10. Vmware workstation needs to build its modules under 4.11.8 which I'm now running. But it can't w/o the matching kernel-headers! Thus my question. Or is there a better way? -Sherman

Hi! I've just installed F26 and everything works well except my VPN connection. It used to work perfectly under F25 and I didn't think to save its settings. I am not however stuck. I did a few (many?) searches and found actually different results on how to set it up. The most common results give the following suggestions: in advanced setting enable MSCHAP & MSCHAPv2 also enable MPPE (no stateful encryption), BSD data compression, Deflate data compression and use TCP header compression. Then in the user name field I forgot if I entered domain\username or just username and entered the domain in the NT Domain box. Thinking it could have been a F26 issue I just burn a live install of F25 and tried, same issue. Docker question

I've asked this question on the Docker support forum (no email available!) but have seen no answers. If there are other better places to ask, please let me know. I have a Fedora 23 host (to be upgraded to F25 or F26 in the near future). It has two networks and I want to run a Docker container that can participate in both of them. The host defines these two networks (and a gateway on a third network), $ route -n Destination Gateway Genmask ... Iface default w.x.y.254 0.0.0.0 ... eth0 a.b.c.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 ... eth2 e.f.g.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 ... eth3 So far for Docker, I have, (1) $ docker network create --subnet a.b.c.0/24 --gateway a.b.c.254 eth2 (2) $ docker network create --subnet e.f.g.0/24 --gateway e.f.g.254 eth3 (3) $ docker create --network=eth2 --ip=a.b.c.1 container program (4) $ docker network connect --ip=e.f.g.1 eth3 container (5) $ docker start container # (With a few more arguments in real life.) This gets me most of what I want except the ability to actually participate in the host's networks. Traffic doesn't leave the container. I understand I must somehow map the container's networks to the host's networks. But I'm having trouble learning how to do that. I can map the first network, I think. Instead of line (3) above, I try, (6) $ docker create --network=eth2 --ip=a.b.c.1 \ -p a.b.c.d:1-65535:1-65535/tcp -p a.b.c.d:1-65535:1-65535/udp \ container program But I don't see how to map the second network since the -p option is not available for "docker network connect" (or for "docker start"). Of course, using -p might not be the proper solution, anyway. Is it possible to do what I want? google-chrome-stable v 59 on centos7

Hey guys. (no. this isnt a typo!! sorry 'bout that earlier!) Got a bit of an issue that's apparently flumoxed other as well. I'm trying to set up a centos7 box to test out py+selenium+google-chrome. As far as I can tell, you essentially download/install the bits (yum) and you can fire up a test. I'm not quite getting there though. I've set the epel repo for a few things. Downloaded/installed google-chrome-stable (v59) via yum downloaded chromedriver as well installed Xvfb right not, simply trying to get google-chrome-stable to run from the cmdline with no errs as sudo user, started Xvfb :1 & export DISPLAY=":1" fired up google-chrome-stable and got: google-chrome-stable Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":1". F24 Xfce not recognizing external monitor

I just got back from 2 weeks on the road. One boot during that time. Resumed from last Suspend and connected the external monitor. Did a <winkey-P> and it is not seeing the external monitor as it normally does. Any recommendation short of a reboot? thanks

The boot-up image (whose name I don't know), meaning the one that shows between booting and logging in, is aesthetically pleasing beyond any I recall. Kudos to the artist! Is there a way to get this image into my pictures file? Or directly to make it available to xscreensaver?

Hello, I am lost. You may help me. I have 2 questions in 1 I copy an encrypted "folder" from one disk to another one (by using tar) How can recover it? Actually, I do not remember how I do create this encrypted folder. I cannot find the instruction Typical to mount it, I just did: encfs /home/pdupre/encrypt /home/pdupre/pdupre-enc /home/pdupre/encrypt is a directory I guess that I just need to recreate a similar folder to be able to mount my previous one! Randomly, if I play a youtube video in google chrome, I'll get a pop-pop-pop... audio background noise at a rate of about 1 every half second. If I close the chrome app, the pop-pop-pop... keeps going for about 30 seconds after chrome goes away. Anyone else ever had this happen? Anyone have any idea what it is? This is on fedora 24, google-chrome-stable, all updates applied. The audio output is nvidia HDMI using the rpmfusion binary drivers. It isn't very frequent, and I can come back to the same video later and it will often play fine, so it isn't even reproducible. Nothing shows up in any logs that I can find or in dmesg.

(admittedly not an actual "fedora" topic but i'm sure i'll get some good advice here.) i'm currently perusing someone else's collection of shell scripts, and looking to add more, and want to clarify once and for all the meaning of writing (and verifying) the "POSIX-ness" of shell scripts, and what tools i can use to detect "bashisms" (or lack of POSIX-ness) in scripts. first, can i verify that trying to keep my scripts as POSIX-compatible as possible is a good thing? i've always assumed that, just curious as to what others think, and how much effort they put into adhering to the POSIX standard (thereby giving up all those cool bash extensions). next, if i want to enforce POSIX-ness, is it just a matter of using #!/bin/sh --posix actually, i already know it's not that simple, since i'm sure i've read that even adding that "--posix" option still leaves some non-POSIX features active; i'll re-read the docs to verify that. finally, pointers to shell analysis utilities? WRT fedora packages, i've already found: * devscripts-checkbashisms * ShellCheck and i suspect there are others. so, thoughts? and any pointers to online coverage of this stuff? thank you kindly. rday

cannot use Pitivi because of obscure missing library/plugin

Greetings, I urgently need to clip and save a few scenes from some mp4 files. Nothing more. Only machine I can do this right now is a fedora 25 x86_64 box. When I launch PiTiVi from the command line, it starts, but it says: Missing soft dependency: - libav not found on the system -> additional multimedia codecs through the GStreamer Libav library But I haven't been able to figure out WHICH package/repository is supposed to provide that libav library. Dnf search returns so many packages of gstreamer plugins that I fear to make things worse by installing them at random. If I ignore that warning and I try to import the mp4 files in PiTiVi, it complains like this: Problem: gst-core-error-quark Extra information: gst-core-error-quark: Your GStreamer installation is missing a plug-in. (12) but for this error message I've only found errors like this, on other distros, that do nothing good on Fedora: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=138027 please help me to find out which package I should install, or setting I should change. Alternatively, please just let me know which other video editor can quickly and surely "clip and save a few scenes from some mp4 files" which is all I need right now, on Fedora 25, without hunting error messages, libraries etc.. F26 x86_64 on Macbook Pro?

Hi, Recently I didn't follow the informations regarding how Fedora can be installed on Apple hardware. Anyway, I downloaded the Fedora 26 Live image to check and install on my old Macbook Pro 3.1. I have a gpt disk with more partitions that I want to keep. Actually I have two ext4 partitions as well with old fedora 21 i386 system, that I want to upgrade (reformatting the root partition). The boot manager currently is Refit. When I start F26 from USB, refit recognizes it and the live system can start and seems to work. During installation I choose custom partitioning, but at that point the installation stucks. It says "No valid boot loader target device found. ..." Even if I add sda1 efi system partition as /boot/efi. Is there any trick or workaround to make it installable? Best, Zoltan

Hello, I prepared my fresh installation of F26. I have a /boot (500M) partition (actually /boot/efi preformated as ext4). In the installer, I get: For a UEFI installation, you must include an EFI system Partition on a GPT-formatted disk, mounted as /boot/efi Can it not reformatted the /boot with the correct format (I set reformat EFI System Partition). Should I do it with fdisk manually (ef)? Evolution sent mail folder for EWS account not updated

Evolution (evolution-3.24.4-1.fc26.x86_64, but it has been happening for a while) shows that I have 3508 messages in my Sent Items folder for an EWS account, but the message window only shows about 35 messages. The latest is from July 16 and the oldest is from 2016-02-21. Clicking Send/Receive or Refresh on the Sent Items folder does not seem to have any effect. The Web interface to the account shows all the messages. Has anyone run into this? How can I diagnose the issue? What is causing these hardware errors?

I am getting this block of messages put into /var/log/messages every few minutes (or seconds) since I received this laptop and installed F25. The install is updated as of two days ago. Macine is a new Dell Precision 7520. What does this mean? Looks like it was a problem with gdm. Disabling gdm gives the usual console login and it now works. Does Gnome ignore xdg-settings?

I run KDE but use a number of Gnome applications including Evolution. I'm currently using Opera as my default web browser, but can't get Evolution to recognise this. Running gnome-control-center offers me a list of possible browsers but Opera is not one of them and I don't see where I can add it as an option. I cannot make head or tail of gsettings (nothing under the evolution- related schemas says anything about browsers), so I try xdg-settings: $ xdg-settings get default-web-browser opera.desktop Looks fine, right? But clicking on a link in Evolution opens Firefox. So my question is, if xdg-settings is meant to be the solution to DE incompatibility issues, why does this not work? poc

Mysterious error on logging in

I get regularly (maybe 70% of the time) get this on logging under both KDE and Gnome: "Oops, looks like a problem occurred with a component. It was been reported" (paraphrasing as the message box doesn't allow selection). Who is telling me this? No idea. What was the error? Doesn't say. What component failed? Search me. Where was it reported? Your guess is as good as mine. How do I follow it up? The answer must remain a mystery. poc

Hello, I thought f26 would bring me qt 5.8 and improve a few things with my qutebrowser's experience. However, after the update (from f25) qutebrowser was still using qt 5.7.1 : weird. So I decided to take a look to the installed version of qt5/qt5-qtwebengine... 5.8.0 for the qt5 meta package, 5.7.1 for qt5-qtbase, and 5.9.1 for qt5-qtwebengine. And now I'm lost. Fedora 26 update causes crash on boot

I just finished configuring F25 on a new Dell precision 7520 (essentially same as 7510) with Samsung's PM961 1TB PCIe M.2 SSD "disk". Wonderously fast! Boots in like 2 seconds. KDE comes up in 5. Hello fellow Fedora users, I've been using the same Fedora installation on my desktop for the last 4 years, but for the first time I'm completely stumbled with a bug after upgrading from Fedora Workstation 25 to 26. When I press the slash/question-mark (on a PT-BR keyboard) key while focused into a window, or when pressing backspace to erase that slash immediately afterwards, X11 will freeze for about a second consuming 100% CPU. No other key causes the same behavior, not even the slash key from the numeric keypad. I can observe the issue in GTK2, GTK3, Qt and custom applications (such as Chrome and Firefox), but I cannot reproduce the behavior when sending inputs to `xev` for observation. Even GDM is afflicted when typing my user password, before ever having logged in. Given the bizarre and extremely specific nature of the issue, my first suspects are input-related software such as ibus, libinput or Xorg itself. Using different ibus settings, and even attempting to disable it (by setting XMODIFIERS=@im=none) didn't seem to have any effect. libinput doesn't seem like a good candidate, as raw events captured by `xev` don't trigger the issue. I profiled Xorg using `perf` but could not see any clues to what the problem is. I generated a flame-graph [1] (source data at [2]), but most of the symbols seem to be missing, probably courtesy of the NVIDIA proprietary driver. I'm not even sure to which software to report this bug. Is anyone experiencing anything similar, or has any suggestions for ways to debug to get to the core of the problem? If I run ">/etc/securetty" and add "auth [user_unknown=ignore success=ok ignore=ignore default=bad] pam_securetty.so" to various /etc/pam.d/* files (as described in <https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/4/ht…>), root login on the console is blocked as it should be. But the user gets no hint of the problem, merely a refreshed login screen. One asking for the admin password to configure network, the other for using rfkill. If I cancel both the system still works perfect. What't behind? How to stop this behaviour? Good evening, A few years ago, I found a web site "https://www.av-test.org" when trying to find comparisons of windows-7 anti-virus software. I more recently re-visited that site, and found an article on Linux and anti-virus software for Linux. It's here: "https://www.av-test.org/en/news/news-single-view/linux-16-security-packages…". I have a few questions for this list: 1. How independent and objective is the group doing these tests, comparisons, and evaluations? This is important for knowing just how much weight to give what they say. 2. If you've had any experience with any of the anti-virus packages reported on in that article, especially those that received high scores for workstations, what is your review of that/those packages? routes not being applied to interfaces

Pre-F26 upgrade I used a route file to apply work related routes while docked, for some reason since the upgrade when I look via route or ip route I am no longer getting the ones from the file applied. I did verify the name of my interface is correct.. the name changed once after an update so that's always the first thing I check. Hi, for those who love razorsharp fonts just like me but got the new v40 interpreter coming with freetype-2.7 enforced on them when installing F26: the good old v35 interpreter is still there (and I hope it will be forever). You can use it by setting the environment variable FREETYPE_PROPERTIES=truetype:interpreter-version=35 If you also want subpixel rendering, which now is disabled by default, you can dig into the foption.h file in the config directory of the freetype sourcecode, uncomment the option and recompile. I have never been able to understand why people like the blurry and muddy Micro$oft-like font rendering... gaah.. Hi, I have tested for this "bug" under Gnome and find that it (the "bug") has gone away. KDE apparently has some bugs outstanding along with one whose component that handles menuing in the desktop and the one (same one?) that handles/registers apps that start up, contains other apps, displays virtual desktops, presents various KDE menus, displays the time of day and some other things. But I figured I'd toss it out here, maybe someone can have an offline conversation to figure it out. I'll even toss some $$ if it's required! I've got a site (drupal+mod) that's throwing an infinite redirect. I've been searching high/low, as well as modifying/testing the httpd.conf, .htaccess, and the setting file for the app. Other's have had similar issues, and I'm spinning my head on this. Pretty sure this is going to be a "doh" issue when I solve it! If you're bored, and have a few mins and want to take a stab, let me know. I've got paste files with the data I've got so far. Network dies on laptop lid closure

I'm running Fedora 26 on a slightly old HP laptop using KDE. One minor irritation is that whenever I close the lid of the laptop, the network turns off -- both wifi and wired. I do a lot of downloads. I like to start one, close the lid, and set the machine aside while I do other tasks. But I can't, because the network turns off. A quick search using Google indicates that this is a recurrent issue. The solutions I've tried are; 1) Use the power management GUI in KDE system settings to set "Button events handling -> When laptop lid closed -> Do nothing" This stopped the machine from going into hibernation, but the network still turned off. 2) Edited /etc/systemd/logind-conf to set HandleLidSwitch=ignore and, when that didnt' work after reboot, I added: 3) LidSwitchIgnoreInhibited=no even though I'm not sure what that does. That didn't work either. Any help would be appreciated. This was an issue with Fedora 25, too, but not Fedora 24. I never got around to dealing with it in 25 because of time issues. Thanks! billo

According to cfdisk, the partitions left over 1E bytes free. I would love to have an SSD with over an Exabyte of space. Repartitioned the drive with cfdisk, created the luks containers and formatted with no errors. Now the issue is, is the problem the old laptop or the installer not partitioning the drive properly. Greetings, An F25 -> F26 upgrade includes a move from Postgresql 9.5.x to 9.6.x, and PostGIS 2.2.x to 2.3.x. You need to do some extensive preliminary work as well as post-upgrade. I run F26 with MATE. I use Konqueror for man pages, and K3B sometimes. (Past experience has been that one of Brasero, K3B, or one other (I'll think of it ...) will normally burn any CD or DVD I may want, but often I can't tell in advance which.) I can't think of anything else from KDE that I often launch knowingly. So I get lists like today's from dnf upgrade, which had a very long list of kf5-* entries (even though it saw nothing this morning), and can't help wondering .... What other things from KDE might I be using without knowing it? Testing Digitalocean I can create a ssh key I can create a remote instance and poulate it with the key to be able to do ssh foo_user(a)1.2.3.4 and access the vm with no issue... however:: if i spin up 1.2.3.4, as well as 5.6.7.8 how can i be on box 1.2.3.4 and do ssh foo_user(a)5.6.7.8 if i'm spinning up 1.2.3.4 and 5.6.7.8 what do i need to provide in each box o accomplish this! thanks maybe i need rum!

Fedora upgrade, 25 to 26 -

It appears that I am the only one on this list who has not been able to complete the upgrade from Fedora 25 to 26! Yesterday I used about 4 GB of my 25 GB monthly allocation on the effort and apparently the result is a collection of 1.7GB rpms. [bobg@bobg ~]$ du -h /var/lib/dnf/system-upgrade/ 1.7G /var/lib/dnf/system-upgrade/ As I recall it downloaded 1958 of them with only one problem, something about gedit, and I excluded that, then things went on normally it seemed. This morning I am presented with a dark blue window with black text that I can not read. At the bottom in white text on black are two buttons, "Learn More" and "Download." When I click Download it begins to do exactly that at about 16 Mb/s. Where am I in the install process, is it simply going to do a typical update or is going to download everything again? I'd like to submit a bug to bugzilla, but I don't know what classification it would be. A suggestion would be appreciated. Here's the bug: I use Blender (the 3D modeling program) extensively. It runs fine on fedora 25. In fedora 26, it crashes. Aargh! Who fools with /var/run/nologin

I just changed the enabled/disabled services on my /fedora26 boot partition to match the state of the services on my fedora 24 system. Now every time I try to login, it says that /var/run/nologin exists and it won't let me. What furshlugginer services turn this on and off? I thought it might be in gdm.service so I switched back to gdm from kdm, but it still happens. I disabled a bunch of junk like modem manager and dropbear, nothing that I see should have the slightest connection to login (and nothing that isn't already disabled on my fedora 24 system).

GUI update from 25 to 26, dnf still looking at f25 repos

I just upgraded my "spare" laptop (that's literally the hostname!) and I ran into one small problem and one larger problem it seems. The small problem. I keep my own repository of certain packages not available through other means on my main desktop accessed though autofs//nfs. The software center was able to access the metadata during the download phase but system-upgrade apparently didn't download the packages assuming they were local. I remember filing a bug for this with fedup... The bigger issue is everything says Fedora 26 (/etc/fedora-release) and Gnome system information, but when I run dnf it's still looking at the Fedora 25 repos. Where does dnf look for $releasever? f26 KDE Install fail - SSD

Hello, Trying to help someone install F26 on an older laptop that has just had the HDD replaces with an SSD. The SSD was used for a short time on a different machine. A couple of install attempts with the KDE live stick were a big failure when formatting the partitions. CPU usage (dual core) went to 100% on both cores and then died. SSD was partitioned but not formatted. I have no experience with SSD troubles but this seems strange for a little used drive to not be able to be formatted. Could the formatting issues be related to partitions not being on the end of the virtual cylinders? Will test later once we get the drive out of the laptop to see if we can partition and format it. Hi, System is Fedora 27 x86_64 (rawhide), fully up to date with the rawhide repo. Firefox and Opera are producing diacritics (acute accent, dot-above, cedilla-below) when I type in text windows. Fedora on a Dell Precision 7520?

Two questions: (1) Is anyone here running a late version of Fedora on the new Dell Precision 7520 (or 5520)? (2) I ordered the 7520 with a cheap disk drive. It will come with Ubuntu installed. I intend to replace the drive with a M.2 PCIe 1TB SSD card (Samsung PM961). How do I do a "disk copy" to the SDD so that the machine will boot Ubuntu from it? (Once I confirm things are working, I will blow away Ubuntu and install F25 if the answer to (1) is not negative.

Just updated a dual monitor system from F25 to F26 and *everything* went smoothly with one nice surprise. I run the nVidia drivers from RPMfusion on this system. I was expecting, as always happened in the past, that on reboot I'd be looking at a blank screen with a blinking cursor. I was expecting to have to switch to a terminal, or ssh into the system, to type in the command to manually build the kmod-nvidia package. But no, the system came up in graphics mode but without nvidia or nouveau loaded (forgot to check what it did load). So, I was able to login, bring up a konsole (I use KDE) and copy/paste the necessary command to rebuild kmod-nvidia. Nice. -- Fedora Users List - The place to go to speculate endlessly

I have this video card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM206 [GeForce GTX 960] (rev a1) The gome3 login screen comes up OK, but as soon as I try to actually login, the screen goes to some wavy pointilist looking thing and seems to freeze up. I had to hit the reset button to get the system back. I've tried no experimenting yet, but for a guess wayland, nouveau, and the 960 don't hit it off very well (and maybe the UHD resolution monitor contributes as well). When I have a chance to fool with this tomorrow, I'll try forcing an X11 login instead of wayland. Right now I just set it to multi-user.target and am using the text console when I boot to f26.

Can't change plymouth theme

The -R option to plymouth-set-default-theme appears to do absolutely nothing whatsoever. It grinds away, for a few seconds, but when it's done and over, the initramfs in /boot remains completely untouched. Running plymouth-set-default-theme tells me that the theme has been changed. plymouth simply fails to rebuilt the initramfs. It looks to me like plymouth is being neglected, to some degree. There are a bunch of bugs in Bugzilla that's been open for years, with nothing happening on them. I am not a big fan of the default plymouth theme. It's quite boring, and simply reminds me how long it takes for Fedora to boot. At least solar was somewhat entertaining to watch, while various bits were coming alive… But in F25, the solar theme was mostly broken. One of my laptops completely refused to boot, with the solar theme. Had to reluctantly reset it back to charge. Another laptop did manage to survive F25's solar, but, basically, solar's grapics suffered from Tourette's syndrome, all the way through. I reported that bug. Someone else confirmed it, and that's one of the open plymouth bugs, gathering dust, that I mentioned. So now, I wanted to take the laptop that tolerated solar somewhatm in F25, and see what's up with F26's solar. But, because of another bug, that's so old that I can't even find it anymore, every time the plymouth rpm gets updated the default theme gets rather rudely reinstalled, so I have to run plymouth-set-default-theme -R, to rebuild the initramfs. But now, -R doesn't work for me. Well it still runs, but simply fails to rebuild the initramfs, without complaining about anything. I see nothing with any updated timestamp, in /boot. The initramfs there has not been rebuilt. Oh well, just created another plymouth bug, I guess, to join the rest of them, gathering dust. Since plymouth-set-default-theme did set the default theme for future kernel installs, I guess I'll discover the results of this latest experiment the next time I update the kernel.

So, I decided to do a clean installation of F26 over my F25 installation. My old configuration was: Dual boot HP laptop: Win 10, F25. F25 had an encrypted /home partition, a separate /swap partition (I know I don't have to have one, but I'm old), and an unencrypted / partition where, I thought, /boot/efi lived. I do the installation using the GUI from "Install to Hard Drive" on the USB live distro ((KDE spin), and choose "delete everything associated with only F25." I am required to create a /boot/efi partition by the GUI. So I do (I vaguely remembered that F25 was happy using the system uefi partition, but I don't remember). I install, and everything seems to go well. Then I reboot, and my old F25 boot options come up (i.e. a list of F25 kernels and the Win 10 bootloader). Of course, it can no longer find the F25 kernel. The Win 10 boots up fine. So... I'm figuring I mis-configured where to put the boot directory, and somehow it's finding the old one (which may well be in the system uefi partition -- I don't remember). The last time I had a problem with this, I ended up trying to move directories by hand, and wrote over the Windows boot loader, which caused me no end of headaches. I don't want to make that mistake again. Fedora 26 qemu breaks Win10 guests

Upgraded F25 that had a Win10 guest VM to F26. When the VM got started, the initial logo and the spinning circle came up, but then the display cleared to what appears to be the VGA 648x480 resolution, with gray vertical lines and something else. After a few minutes of this I force-rebooted the VM. Windows 10 went into "Automatic Repair", then gave up, reporting some corrupted file. It didn't find any restore points either. So, I'm now reinstalling it from a recovery disk. I have no idea if the restored image will come up…

Mouse middle-button does work well on sound volume control

I was in the middle of doing some coding and I got this: $ make make: error while loading shared libraries: /lib64/libgmp.so.10: unexpected reloc type 0x000208a8 At no time was I doing any updates or other priv'ed actions that might change the system. No dmesg since boot up 2 hours ago. I check with rpm: $ rpm -q -V gmp ..5...... /usr/lib64/libgmp.so.10.3.2 Did a reinstall: $ dnf reinstall gmp And rpm verify has nothing to report: $ rpm -q -V gmp Now make is working again. Any idea what is going on? Barry

lost three-finger middle button after upgrade

I upgraded my laptop (Dell XPS 13) to Fedora 26. Unfortunately, I lost the three-finger click on the touchpad to get an emulated middle button in the process. I use XFCE. I cannot find any relevant configuration in the Mouse and Touchpad settings, nor with xinput, or the settings editor. My questions: is this a bug, and if so, in what component? F24 QEMU running away at 100% cpu after system resume

This is an ongoing pain in the hind side. All too often, when I resume my F24 system after a suspend, my QEMU is running away at 100% and my F21 image (that I use for a few apps that I like from F21) is non-responsive. The only option, so far, has been to force the image off, then restart it, then get everything working again. It does not matter if I Pause the image or not. I have not been able to find any telling messages in syslog. Other than upgrading (I am waiting for F26 to ship, but I will just port the F21 image to the new F26 system), any recommendations? I am at the IEEE 802 conference this week, so I suspend many times during the day as I move between sessions. And next week is IETF with again lots of suspend/resume activity... Thanks Bob

Multi-user VNC on F23 and later

I'm trying to setup a multi-user VNC server on recent versions of Fedora without success thus far. I understand that doing so requires a display manager with XDMCP support. The current default DM is SDDM which does not include such support (at least so far as I've found). That means I need to change the DM. Following a suggestion I found somewhere, I ran "dnf install kdm; systemctl enable --force kdm.service". I chose KDM because the machines involved generally use KDE, not Gnome. That seems to be a painless substitution. However, I'm sure I'll have to install some protections against automatic updates that reverse the change. Then I tried to follow the instructions in RH Bugzilla 1393971 (<https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1393971>) and those at RH Solutions 2516 (for XDMCP with xinetd) and 2681531 (which replaces xinetd with a systemd socket). I also modified /etc/kde/kdm/Xaccess to uncomment "*". After this I get a connection but no login screen, just a blank screen with a momentary note about using F8. The log shows several errors at different times in my experiments. Sometimes Plymouth is not running. Sometimes I'm told the VNC service got more than one socket. Usually KDM reports that it can't open the display, using an IPv6 notation for the display. Can anyone point me to instructions which take into account systemd and the structure of recent Fedora releases? It seems to me likely that I've messed up something simple in trying to adapt the instructions (which are for xinetd and GDM). Can't change F26 XFCE desktop image background

Something is fundamentally not working here. I'm just trying to change the desktop background picture. I go into Settings > Desktop. The "Background" tab is open by default. The "Folder" dropdown list offers several predefined locations. I pick "Other", and a file selection dialog opens, showing the contents of "/usr/share". But every file and subdirectory of "/usr/share" is grayed out and disabled. I can't actually browse the filesystem. The dialog is dead. The only thing I can do here is pick from one of the preselected directory locations on the left, like "Desktop", "Documents", "Music", etc. Each one opens the corresponding directory, but that's it. Every file and subdirectory is grayed out and disabled. I'm seeing this on two separate laptops that were upgraded to F26. What the heck is going on?

Upgrade from Fedora 24 to F25 - does it include firmware installed directly to hardware devices, mainboard?

Hi All I have a strange behaviour since upgrading from F24 to F25 a few days ago: the mini display port on my laptop doesn't connect me anymore to the external second screen, a TV monitor. This connection worked like a charm on F24. And the mini display port cable is OK: I can see pre-login messages on the connected TV monitor while booting the system. If you're interested in the machine where this happens, software etc: here's a message to the xorg list from me, a few weeks ago, on how adding a second display to a computer with F24 worked very well: https://lists.x.org/archives/xorg/2017-May/058744.html The reason for this message today is only what you see in the subject line: I simply want to rule out bugs that have nothing to do with the OS itself, or software - like drivers, xorg packages etc. I know that during such upgrade processes firmware is getting updated, but so far I thought this was a change to a runnning OS, and not one with persistent changes to hardware. Details: xrandr detects the mini display port, and the connection to the monitor, but the monitor stays black in 99% of cases. xrandr output: DisplayPort-1-0 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1360x768 60.02 + Please note the missing asterisk the last lines behind "1360x768 60.02" that normally seems to indicate an established connection to some external display. journalctl often says: /usr/libexec/gdm-x-session[4386]: (WW) RADEON(G0): drmWaitVBlank failed for PRIME update: Invalid argument Funny thing is: I have similar problems on a second OS (Debian 9) on the same computer, on a separate disk - not necessarily with the same error messages, but with similar results. Except that Debian even does not detect the mini display port connection, contrary to Fedora 25. When I saw that hours ago it made me wonder whether this is really just a result of wrong settings, software/OS bugs, and not the result of some new firmware installed to some hardware device. I did the changes you suggested to my source code and the code did compile successfully, so I copied that code to the source location for dkms to pick it up from, and ran the dkms autoinstall process and it was compiled and built into the kernel successfully, and I now have wireless access back again. Thankyou for all your help. Hello, for reasons I have to send the input from an audio interface to an other. I can do this with pactl load-module module-loopback \ source="alsa_input.usb-Burr-Brown_from_TI_USB_Audio_CODEC-00.analog-stereo" \ sink="alsa_output.usb-M-AUDIO_M-Track_Hub-00.analog-stereo" and this works as desired. Currently I have to issue this command (realized as procedure) after each login. I want a permanent solution. Where to place this command? Or is there an other permant solution beside this command? BTW, rc.local doesnt't work. Any pointer welcome. Kind regards, Frank

dnf failing to update

Recently I've started seeing failure with dnf update. It appears that I'm attempting to access a RedHat ipaddress presumably to update the repomd.xml file but it is failing and seems to indicate that there is a "network failure" (code 4) http://209.132.178.35/25/repomd.xml appears to be a dead link I have attempted to remove /var/dnf/cache completely thinking it was storing the IPaddr there but to no avail. Where is this URL/IPaddr coming from? Has anyone else encountered this or know where to start to debug? qemu/kvm vs top

I'm running a Windows 10 VM under QEMU/KVM, using libvirt via the Virtual Machine Manager. I have the VM configured with 8GB assigned to the VM with hugepages (of 16GB total in the box) and VFIO passthrough of my Nvidia graphics card. I have also pinned 2 of my 4 CPU cores (i.e. 4 threads) for gaming. CPU is an i7-3770. Sometimes the GPU runs hot and I pause the VM to let it cool, however 'top' shows qemu-system-x86 sucking up over 25% of CPU. OTOH the KDE System Activity tool shows it using only 3%. Clearly they can't both be right. Is this a bug in 'top'? poc

Everyone: Does anyone have experience with installing Fedora on a NUC? In case anyone here doesn't know what a NUC is: it happens to stand for Next Unit of Computing. It is a 5.4 x 4.9 x 4.5-/inch/ box having the minimal number of components to support desktop functions. You equip it with your own hard drive, keyboard, mouse, etc., and can drive up to a 4K Ultra-style monitor. Some people use its VESA mount to mount it on the back of their TV. Result: instant smart TV--smarter than any TV in the store, because it can handle word processing and regular Web apps in addition to video and audio streaming. Word is that it normally ships with Windows 10, but can support any number of distributions of Linux. I want to know whether Fedora is one of them. It sounds like the ideal small office/media lab/home theater solution. Pair it with a good NAS and you have all the computing power you need, with a fraction of the physical--and carbon--footprint. Comments? Suggestions? Success stories? Horror stories? Temlakos

I think there's another option with a much smaller carbon footprint & much lighter on pocket. I only requires around 10 wattage per hour electricity usage (Wattage includes Modem electricity consumption also). Negligible wear & tear (EX: HD crashing due to sudden power loss) with almost same functionalities of like Open Source OS , Media Centre , Internet etc Raspberry Pi (Wifi) (in place of NUC) + SDCard (In Place Of HD) + OpenElec Media Centre (In Place of Fedora). Good evening, Turning off ssh in the public zone, and entering the commands * systemctl stop sshd * systemctl mask sshd * systemctl stop httpd * systemctl mask httpd do seem to be working. After three days, I'm still not seeing any indications in journalctl output of external attempts to connect to my workstation. I am comfortable saying this issue is solved. Thunderbird 'loading message' issue

Hi All; I've updated to Thunderbird 52.2.1 running Fedora 25 and KDE Ween I click on a message in one of my many many folders under my main email account (a google account) I get 'message loading' for a long time, 5/10 minutes in many cases before the message loads. Anyone else seeing this? Is it a Thunderbird issue? google issue? Anyone know of a fix? Thanks in advance

[F25] Emacs key binding in KDE

Just moved from F21 to F25 and many things are not working as expected (which is to be expected!) One is the way to get most applications (like Firefox, and KDE itself, to honour basic emacs key bindings for cursor motions. In F21 and prior I had a little file in my home dir called ".gtkrc-2.0" which contained this magic line: gtk-key-theme-name = "Emacs" This no longer works. Would one of you kind souls share the magic incantation for F25? Thanks! -Sherman

F25 nfs not starting

Upgraded to F25 a couple of months ago and nfs stopped working. I was hoping there would be a fix by now, but the problem persists. I had nfs running on F24 and earlier with no issues, now it won't even start. Both systemctl start nfs-server.service systemctl stop nfs-server.service hang. I did that and it still hangs. I have a feeling this must be a known issue (I mean, really, nfs not working on a major distribution?) but I can't find anything useful on the web about it. Any ideas? DWA-192 Driver no Longer Compiles After Maintenance Update in F25

Hi, I am using a DWA-192 usb WiFi adapter in F25 hence I need to get a driver from github to be compiled on my system so that I can use the adapter. This driver compiled and worked quite happily with kernel 4.9.9, not that the kernel version is necessarily an indicator of compile success. It had been a month or more since I had apply any system updates, so I did so two days ago, which as part of the update updated the kernel to 4.11.5, and when dkms went to compile the driver for the new kernel the compile failed with error messages about implicit function definitions and messages about warnings having been converted to errors. I tried doing a search on the net for a DWA-192 driver and got a link to github to a driver version that seemed to be the same version as the driver I already had, but I downloaded it anyway and did a manual compile of that but it failed to compile with the same errors. Does anyone know if there is an updated driver that will compile with the current level of F25 or whether it has yet to be updated for compatibility with F25 and hence I will need to continue to use Ethernet internet access? regards, Steve

Good morning, For the past several months, I've done most of my viewing and posting to this group via the "fedora HYPERKITTY" web site ("https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org/") rather than by viewing things through Thunderbird. It's easier to read and follow, and use (post to). Until a few days ago... For the past few days, I've seen messages displayed in threads two or more times, messages that I've sent not showing up, and messages in a thread out of order. To whom do I report this, and how do I contact that person or organization? thanks, Bill.

Is there a way to stop ipv6 leakage without turning off ipv6?

I'm using Fedora 25 on an HP laptop with KDE. I commonly use a VPN service, but it leaks ipv6 addresses. This seems to be a common problem with VPN and ipv6, from what I've read on the internet. So, I've turned off ipv6 for my wireless interface, and that seems to solve the problem. However, I just can't help but think that this will eventually cause a problem somewhere. Is there a better solution for ipv6 leakage with a vpn on Fedora 25 other than just turning it off? Thanks, billo

Good afternoon, (f25 home workstation) While looking at journalctl output yesterday and today for other reasons (separate thread), I saw many "authentication failure" messages, over half also saying "user=root". I also saw many "password check failed for user (root)" messages. I saw many unknown user login attempts, and a few invalid user login attempts, and some attempts using one of the valid regular user names. Why? I am not yet good at reading journalctl output, so I don't know if these connection attempts are coming from "outside" or within this system. I don't know if I should be concerned or not. I do not intend anyone or anything to be able to get in to this system except for things that I initiate (examples: Firefox activity, Thunderbird activity, "dnf upgrade", installs, etc.). And it doesn't make sense to me that any of those would be trying to log in to this system to do what I want. I also don't see why anything on this system would try to log in to this same system except me personally (su, sudo, and actual logins). I am the only actual user. What's going on? How do I determine where they're coming from? Is there really someone or something trying to hack in? If no, what really is going on? Most important, How do I prevent connections from outside? thanks, Bill.

Is it just for me that VLC has stopped working with latest upgrade? When I open a media file it will play the audio but not the video and in the log there is vlc.desktop[22216]: [00007f5298001080] xcb vout display error: window not available Totem doesn't have any problem playing the same media files. My VLC version is 3.0.0-0.28.git20170622.fc25 /Mark

Screensaver Anomaly in F25

I did an upgrade from F24 to F25. Everything seems to be working fine. I use xscreensaver instead of gnome-screensaver with a Gnome desktop. I have noticed that the timer for the screensaver is not being reset when I type or use the mouse. I can be using the machine and the screensaver will activate and then deactivate (since I'm typing or using the mouse). Has anyone else noticed this kind of behavior? Is this something with xscreensaver or is the timer reset somewhere else? Craig

OutlawCountry 29 June, 2017 Today, June 29th 2017, WikiLeaks publishes documents from the OutlawCountry project of the CIA that targets computers running the Linux operating system. OutlawCountry allows for the redirection of all outbound network traffic on the target computer to CIA controlled machines for ex- and infiltration purposes. The malware consists of a kernel module that creates a hidden netfilter table on a Linux target; with knowledge of the table name, an operator can create rules that take precedence over existing netfilter/iptables rules and are concealed from an user or even system administrator. The installation and persistence method of the malware is not described in detail in the document; an operator will have to rely on the available CIA exploits and backdoors to inject the kernel module into a target operating system. OutlawCountry v1.0 contains one kernel module for 64-bit CentOS/RHEL 6.x; this module will only work with default kernels. Also, OutlawCountry v1.0 only supports adding covert DNAT rules to the PREROUTING chain. My first take is that this doesn't represent a very serious threat. Do you disagree?

Writing a systemd service file

Hi, I'm trying to write a service file for a daemon and having some problems. I believe the issue is with the ability to give the process write and read access to parts of the filesystem which appear to somehow be restricted. The daemon is the Avira virus scanner, which runs under amavisd-new. The daemon's home directory is /usr/local/savapi-sdk-linux_glibc24_x86_64, and it needs write access in the modules directory. The daemon can run as root or as the amavis user. It drops its privileges to the amavis user after starting anyway. The ExecStart script just spawns the savapi daemon: #!/bin/bash cd /usr/local/savapi-sdk-linux_glibc24_x86_64/bin ./savapi --config=savapi.conf & When I attempt to start the service, journalctl -xe shows me: Validation failed for option 'ModulesDir' with value '/usr/local/savapi-sdk-linux_glibc24_x86_64/modules'. Path cannot be accessed (no write permission). ModulesDir is /usr/local/savapi-sdk-linux_glibc24_x86_64/modules When I run the script manually as root or as the amavis user, it runs successfully. I think the problem is that I don't understand how systemd processes access the filesystem and the restrictions on permissions. Any ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks, Alex

Keyboard problems.

Hi, I'm running Fedora 27 x86_64 (rawhide) and have noticed a problem in text windows with Firefox. The problem exists in both the FF released version AND the FF beta version. It could be Firefox. The problem exists with KDE and WindowMaker as the desktop manager. What I'm seeing: I have the caps lock key mapped to the ctrl key so when I type ALL caps I have to hold down the shift key. When I try to insert a space between words I have to release the shift key, otherwise the space is ignored. This used to work but since I reinstalled this system the keyboard is acting strangely. This behavior plus certain other letters seem to want to generate a cedilla or an accent grave or accent acute or an umlaut. There are a few other characters that behave similarly. Coincidentally I started getting messages about python forcing "PYTHONCOERCECLOCALE=0". Maybe this is not related to this problem, I can't tell. Could this be a LOCALE issue? I can't tell if this is a bug or just a UFU (User Foul Up). Any thoughts/hints/tips/suggestions would be gratefully accepted. Thanks, George...
