Organising photos visually
by Patrick O'Callaghan
Looking for some advice here. I have a large set of old slides
(transparencies) which I'm currently scanning for the family, but of
course many of them are out of order. Clearly they don't have EXIF
information (they were taken in the 70s and 80s). I'm looking for a way
to order them *visually* after scanning, but the usual apps (Digikam,
Shotwell, Lightroom) don't seem to be able to do this. They only
understand machine-readable sorting, e.g. by the file mod date, size,
exposure data etc., none of which is useful in this case.
Any ideas?

how to audit chmod syscall system wide? a wired problem of home
directory group write permission got set
by mr.cheng
my Linux laptop started to have a problem of setting my home directory with group write permission
$ ls -ld $HOMEdrwxr-x--- 34 user users 4096 Jan 30 21:45 /home/user
to:
$ ls -ld $HOMEdrwxrwx--- 34 user users 4096 Jan 30 21:45 /home/user
This usually doesn't cause a problem but since recently it started settings group write on servers as well which I did ssh login; and once logout, the next time it doesn't allow re-login from server side sshd audit logs, says because of group write permission is set it doesn't allow my account to login;
this wired problem has started settings multiple ssh servers, either at home Linux server, or Linux server in the cloud,but it isn't always reproducible, in past 30 days it happened 3 times to 4 different servers
I suspect current Linux laptop has a software virus or something because it has been in use for 2 years; I re-installed the laptop with latest Fedora 27 and all started as fresh, but 2 weeks later right now, the group write permission is set again to one of my servers;
I checked all bash_history and system logs, didn't see any explicit bash call of "chmod g+w ..." ; so I suspect some software is calling by chmod syscall, so I wonder anyone knows how to set a system wide chmod audit? and if a whole hard drive anti-virus scan is necessary, which anti-virus scan software do you recommend?
It's weird that nothing worse than a group write permission set. No damage to system, no malfunctioning. The newly installed Linux system just functions perfect if without that.But I am kind of pretty sure it's this laptop, because whenever this laptop is down time, I use another newer laptop I bought a few months ago, nothing bad happens yet during this current 3years old laptop downtime.
Thanks;

Fedora 27 curl 7.55.1 ignore self-signed certificates
by Kleber Rocha
Hi,
I have a problema with curl, in Fedora 26, I imported the certificate into
the /etc/pki/ca-trust/source/anchors/, and after I run the command:
update-ca-trust extract, after that, curl trust on the self-signed
certificate.
But, in Fedora 27, I do the same configuration, but curl don't trust in the
self-signed certificate.
Thank you

unusual networking question - have DHCP assign the same IP to a
computer, regardless of which ethernet port is used
by Tim
Hi,
I have what's probably an odd-ball desire:
I have a PC with a 100 Mb/s motherboard ethernet interface, and a 1
Gb/s PCI card ethernet interface. And IPs are assigned from a Fedora
PC running a DHCP server which reconfigures its DNS server, on the fly.
I'd like the PC to always get assigned the same IP, and hostname,
regardless of which ethernet port the (single) ethernet cable would get
plugged in to. I'd like the addressing to be consistent, and just
work. Having the PC change addresses because the cable got plugged
into a different port breaks other things on the network.
This is the stanza for this PC in the dhcpd.conf file:
host oddbox {
# hardware ethernet 00:24:21:9A:6F:6C;
hardware ethernet C8:3A:35:DC:54:59;
fixed-address 192.168.1.12;
option host-name "oddbox";
}
It won't allow me to specify two macs, hence one being hashed out.
Is this sort of thing do-able? (And controlled from the DHCP server,
not manually on the PC in question.)
Yes, I know there'd be a world of pain if someone tried to connect both
ports at the same time. But there's only one ethernet cable, so that
can't happen. And I really don't want to physically block the slower
motherboard ethernet port, to prevent it being used accidentally.

Catch22 installing RPM-GPG-KEY
by Jonathan Ryshpan
An attempt to install vlc failed because my system is missing one of
the gpg key files, namely:
/etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-rpmfusion-free-fedora-27
Attempts to install it fail, because it's not installed. At the bottom
is a log of an attempt to install it, reformatted to fit on the screen
without too much folding.
What's the best way to get the file installed?
Thanks - jon

"cloning" a vm... A bit off topic
by bruce
Hey guys.
This really isn't a fed question per se, but one that I'm trying to resolve.
I'm running some test Digital Ocean (DO) droplets. I'm interested in
"downsizing" to a smaller size. DO doesn't provide an easy process to
accomplish this.
I'm trying to figure out how to craft a process to "completely"
clone/copy a working droplet/vm to a smaller size, such that I have an
"exact" copy but simply running on a smaller size VM.
The test VM is a test NFS server, running centos7, using yum.
I've thought of setting up the new/.smaller VM with the same users.
and then::
1) do a massive rsync of the / on the initial VM to the target VM
2) do a yum update
but how do I ensure that all the services on the initial VM are
installed/running on the target??
how do I ensure that all the required config files (nfs/ssh/etc...)
are properly configured/operating..
Thoughts/comments...
Yeah.. I'm not a sys admin/eng!!
Thanks guys..

PHP/apache issue after update
by Emmett Culley
After a recent upgrade some development web sites served from my workstation stopped working. I've narrowed it down to the php_value auto_prepend_file directive not working.
This is in the /etc/httpd/conf.d/csite.conf file:
<Directory /var/dev/csite>
Require all granted
AllowOverride none
php_value error_log /var/dev/logs/caiet_error_log
php_value auto_prepend_file /var/dev/csite/site/host-map.inc
</Directory>
The file /var/dev/csite/site/host-map.inc does not get loaded and this causes a 500 error. I've tried configuring apache as MPM = "prefork" (the new default seems to be "event"), but that made no difference.
Note that all five other sites that use the auto_prepend_file directive no longer work either. All other development sites on my workstation work as expected.
Any ideas where to look further would be appreciated. Fedora 27 is fully up to date.

Automatically changing the tab name on Konsole?
by InvalidPath
Does anyone know if it's even remotely possible to have teh tab names in
Konsole change per remote host you ssh into?
For example, Right now when I open a new tab, its name changes to teh first
hostname that I ssh into. Further ssh jumps do not change it. It's caused
a measurable amount of confusion in the past with many tabs going at once
and since I use one particular host the most as a proxy I have to manually
rename the tabs to help keep track.
Thanks
