kernel: Failed to load gpu_info firmware
by Suvayu Ali
Hello,
I have a strange issue. I am on one of AMD's Raven Ridge APUs (Ryzen 5 2400G). Everything was working fine, with the 4.18.x series kernels. However I wanted to experiment with the ROCm drivers[1] that are under development. I managed to install after some fiddling, but the firmware kept on failing to load. I had to forcefully regenerate all the initrd a few times. Not having succeeded, I decided to uninstall ROCm and go back to my original kernels. However, I still receive the same error even though I have reinstalled my kernels, installed newer kernels from the repo, and what not. Here are the messages from my journal:
[drm] amdgpu kernel modesetting enabled.

This is strange because the firmware files are in their rightful place:

-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 37K Aug 15 17:36 /lib/firmware/amdgpu/raven_asd.bin
Any thoughts on how I can debug this? I have also openned an issue on the ROCm repo[2], but I have yet to receive a useful response.
Thanks,

Wifi Connection in F28 KDE Timing out Waiting for Kwallet Password?
by Stephen Morris
Hi,
I am using KDE as my desktop and have my networkmanager wifi
definition configured to store the wifi password encrypted, hence it is
stored in Kwallet. This morning, as the kettle had boiled, after
supplying my password to log into KDE I went and made myself a cup of
coffee and my wife a cup of tea, which wouldn't have taken any longer
than a couple of minutes, when I got back Kwallet was prompting for the
Kwallet password so that the wifi password could be retrieved. Having
provided the Kwallet password the wifi did not connect, I had to connect
the wifi manually. Is this normal behaviour, normally when supplying the
Kwallet password as soon as prompted for it connects both the firewall
and wifi, and, in this case I don't know whether the firewall connected
even though the wifi didn't or whether it connected when I manually
connected the wifi as I didn't see the normal firewall connection message?
regards,
Steve

Install / as RAID 0
by Richard Shaw
I got some very old computers (Pentium 4) and quite frankly it's choking on
the installer (40 minutes to draw a window to setup partitions), but since
it's a system I don't care about I wanted to experiment with RAID since
I've never done so before.
To make setting up the partitions easier I used System Rescue CD which
boots up and is usable within a reasonable amount of time. The systems came
with 80GB drives so I move one over and setup the partition layout is as
follows:
/dev/sda1 /boot 4GB (too big, but I want it to match partition 1 on sdb)
/dev/sda2 RAID 0 (remainder)
/dev/sdb1 SWAP 4GB
/dev/sdb2 RAID 0 (remainder)
I setup the RAID 0 with mdadm... I still don't know exactly what I'm doing
but I ended up using the LXDE spin because Gnome Live was unusable.
Sometimes the installer sees /dev/md0 and sometimes it doesn't (shows 0
bytes available).
The one time I got through the partitioning using bivlet it complained
about /dev/sdb1 and wouldn't show OK on the main screen, but that's SWAP,
why does it care? If I don't select both drives it won't let me setup
/dev/md0.
Yesterday I tried installing Bodhi linux, I would rather stay with Fedora
or at least something RPM based but it seemed to run decently and the
installer recognized /dev/md0 (after I did an apt install mdadm which
auto-created /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf) and let me install to it.
However... One I rebooted it dropped into busybox. I assume this is either
because /etc is on root so it can't see it OR I need to recreate the initrd
with the right kernel module? Not sure and I haven't been able to find good
instructions for root as RAID... Probably not a good idea, but it's a trash
system so I was just playing with it anyway.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Richard

Log programs
by Mike Chambers
Epylog won't install on F29, think due to not being included/built for
it, anyway it has a dep that I think has deprecated as well.
Soo, what other programs do the same sort of thing, that are automated
to work with cron like epylog does?

Can't play .mov video -
by Bob Goodwin-Fastmail
.
This Fedora 28 VLC will not play the video part of a .mov file. I see
the first frame as a fixed image and the sound works, I hear the music
but dancers [my grand daughter's ballet class] don't move. Another clip
that I know plays normally on a Fedora 27 system, but not on this F28
system, produces the following errors:

............... Snip, i can provide the whole listing if needed.
...................
One video in the group was an mp4, it played as expected, but the others
were .mov, I don't know why they were not all the same type, and I was
surprised to see this problem. I use vlc from rpmfusion and it always
just works for almost anything fed to it. Until tonight I've only
viewed rtsp camera video on this F28 system and there are no problems
with that.
Any suggestions as to what I am missing?

OT: replace a timestamp across multiple files
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
I have a set of dns zone text files in "bind" format. On the fourth
line there is a 10 digit timestamp (ignoring white space, the first
field). There is no way to predetermine the value so search and replace
by value is a no go and seems to require some positional approach such
as "line 4, first 10 digit field".
What is the easiest way to replace each of them with the same value,
$(date +%s) ?
My sed|awk foo is weak.
Any takers?
TIA,
Mike Wright

Structure needs cleaning?? What would be a better way to handle?
by Michael D. Setzer II
I was doing a search of directories to see the sizes, and had some messages
come up about Structure needs cleaning?
My original solution didn't work so well.
Files where in the /var/lib/yum/yumdb directory and the latest one was from
2016.
Since it was part of the / (root) partition /dev/sda2, I just did the
touch /forcefsck and figured the reboot would then have it run a check on the
disk.
The machine rebooted, and did the check, but failed at about 60+% and just
dumped to a limited command prompt.
Was able to fix the problem, by booting to my g4l kernel that loads in ram
from the grub menu. Was able to run fsck -f /dev/sda2 and it reported the
errors on these files in the /var/lib/yum/yumdb directory.
Reboot, and machine came up fine.
Had a number of entries and the lost+found.
So, question.
1. Why wouldn't the boot fsck fix the problem without dumping to a command
prompt?
2. Have a notebook that also has the fedora 28, but it was a clean install. It
doesn't even have the /var/lib/yum/yumdb directory. So, am assumming that
this was left over from system from serveral upgrades ago.
3. Other than booting from another liveos type setup, is there a way to fix this
kind of error.
Machine has been rebooted, but have never seen the error of Structure
needing cleaning before.
Thanks for any info.

really off topic -- yahoo email issue!
by bruce
Feel free to ignore this one !!
I'm testing a webapp, using the test ipadress from the previous email
thread on the apache/vhost setup.
In this case, I'm sending a "test" email to a dummy yahoo email
account to register a test user in the test app. When I perform this
same action with a dummy gmail account, gmail accepts th email. I can
see it.
However, the yahoo process seems to have issues with the emai. I've
submitted the test email address to the yahoo contacts list as well as
checking the spam folder. No luck.

run script in xfce -
by Bob Goodwin
.
I have a bash script that runs in a user terminal but I can't get it to
run from an xfce launcher icon. I usually set up one without any trouble
but this refuses to work as expected.
This is what I have, the commented line works but the one before it is
simpler, either way the result is the same, permissions are set to 777.
All it produces from the launcher icon is a brief flash of the data and
then a blank screen.
[bobg@box83 ~]$ cat SambaFiles
#!/bin/bash
# SambaFiles
xfce4-terminal -H -x &
# /usr/bin/xfce4-terminal --maximize -e 'cd /mnt/box48' &
ls -ctr /mnt/box48/2018*
In a terminal "[bobg@box83 ~]$ ./SambaFiles" produces the desired
directory listing as does /home/bobg/SambaFiles, but neither works when
configured in the launcher from the gui.
Any suggestions appreciated,
*Bob*
