argh -- can't get wireless in someone else's house

i'm embarrassed to admit that i can't, for the life of me, get a wireless connection at a friend's house at the moment. updated fedora 8, and a stock linksys WRT54GL. i have the SSID, i have the WEP key, i even have the router password, so i've logged in and checked everything -- no MAC filtering, no DHCP client limit, etc. but when i try to bring up wireless, /var/log/messages shows me: Feb 8 08:37:59 localhost dhclient: wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801 Feb 8 08:37:59 localhost dhclient: wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801 Feb 8 08:37:59 localhost dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on wlan0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8 Feb 8 08:38:07 localhost dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on wlan0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 11 ... Still on FC4???? On a Pentium 3 too I presume? Clear-QAM and OTA require an ATSC tuner, while an NTSC tuner is needed for analog cable. There are tuner units which will do both, although not all will do so simultaneously. Mythdora is a Fedora based, all in one install of mythtv. It will set up everything you need from one iso image. And Mythtv has definitely NOT required 'your DBA to set up a database' since well before Fedora 4. If your hardware is known to Fedora, then mythtv will not require any 'channel entered frequencies'. You merely select the proper tuning basis, such as US-Broadcast or US-cable when setting up the tuner(s). At the moment, the problematic area is setting up QAM on cable channels due to the cablecos using their own variable channel numbers for the channels (and generally, not including proper PSIP infor in the stream). That is, of course, where the cableco actually provides some clear QAM...which Rogers Cable in Canada, for example, has not done since June 2007. This error pops up whenever my system boots up. Clicking on [Details <<] produces a message box with the single entry "Details" in it. What's happening? Thanks - jon

ESC/P thermal receipt printers and Linux...

Running dmesg after plugging my POS-5890K labelled usb thermal receipt printer, it identifies itself as full-speed USB device number 9 using ehci-pci idVendor=0416, idProduct=5011 Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 Product: POS58 USB Printer Manufacturer: GD32 Microelectronics SerialNumber: Printer I found the hard way that these printers are not supported by CUPS by default ... one has to go the extra length to either send esc/p codes manually via your own app http://kg4zqz.blogspot.com/2016/08/escposf-thermal-printer-filter-and.html ...or compile a driver from source, just like 20 years ago for some printers... maybe 2018 will be the year of desktop linux *sarcasm* I've tried this driver and it didn't work... http://scruss.com/blog/2015/07/12/thermal-printer-driver-for-cups-linux-and… (the driver source was fetched by git from its current github repo, so it's not out of date, it's in fact newer than the above blog post) What gives more clues is the small piece of thermal paper that came with the printer with a printout of its self-test (surely from Windows). It reads: 58-IV-U Thermal Printer Version: 58.E-Z04-AA Revised date: 06-Jan-2017 Command Standard: EPSON (ESC/POS) Print mode: Normal mode & Hex Mode Print method: Line Thermal Print width: 384 dots/line Print speed: 90 mm/s Chinese Mode: NO Print density: Level3 Current Codepage:0 Interface Type: USB Current Character: Chinese (GB18030) Alphanumeric Code Page: 0: OEM437 (Std.Europe) 1: Katakana 2:OEM850 (Multilingual) (…) 96:(Thai2) I wonder why the CUPS folks have not released a generic “EPSON ESC/POS” printer driver where the above parameters can be tweaked and entered manually. The driver mentioned above was compiled, and installed but didn’t work. A sample print gave gibberish. A second text-only printing (by clicking the CUPS “print self-test page” read “IF YOU CAN READ THIS YOU’RE USING THE WRONG DRIVER FOR YOUR PRINTER”. A crude bug-finding code it seems… Any ideas before I head over to the CUPS maling list and pull my hair? [FC8] ssh and CAC card???

From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. As per NSS usual, everything is undocumented, i.e., `ssh-add --help` does not help at all, and `man ssh-add` points to `ssh-add -s reader` # ssh-add -s 0 Enter passphrase for smartcard: SSH_AGENT_FAILURE Could not add card: 0 # ssh-add -s 1 Enter passphrase for smartcard: SSH_AGENT_FAILURE Could not add card: 1 So does anyone know how to use the possible functionality, or are we reduced to reading the source? -- Todd Denniston Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC Crane) Harnessing the Power of Technology for the Warfighter

This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Apache and umask for document root

Hi, I've set up a virtual host for a joomla website and having some permissions problems. I've seen numerous configurations online about how to set umask for the apache user, but none have worked, including creating a systemd file (/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/httpd.service) with the following: [Unit] Description=The Apache HTTP Server After=network.target remote-fs.target nss-lookup.target [Service] Type=notify Environment=LANG=C Umask=0006 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -DFOREGROUND ExecReload=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -k graceful # Send SIGWINCH for graceful stop KillSignal=SIGWINCH KillMode=mixed PrivateTmp=true [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target The problem is that the files are owned by the joomla user, but also need to have access (both read and write) to be able to modify some files within the document root. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to set umask for the apache user? I'm also interested in recommended permissions settings for the joomla document root. Thanks, Alex

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.
