Windows Dual Boot
by Richard Kimberly Heck
For reasons connected with LyX development, I need to install Windows 10
on one of my machines. It is already running Fedora 27, and my intention
is to install Windows 10 on a separate SSD. I've not done this in a long
time, and, as I recall, in the past, it was by far best to install
Windows first. (That's what Google thinks, too.) But it's too late for
that, and I'd really rather not have to re-install Fedora.
I take it the main issue here is getting GRUB back up and running. Can
somone give me hints how to do that?
Thanks for any help,
Riki

screen command and copy/paste terminal buffer to empty
by Dario Lesca
On old version of screen installed on Centos 5.5, for example this ....
$ screen --versionScreen version 4.00.03 (FAU) 23-Oct-06$ rpm -q
screenscreen-4.0.3-4.el5
do not clean terminal copy/paste buffer when I run a new screen or I
reuse a previous screen ... and this is good!
But the subsequent versions to last current version ...
$ screen --versionScreen version 4.06.02 (GNU) 23-Oct-17$ rpm -q
screenscreen-4.6.2-1.fc27.x86_64
clean the terminal copy/paste buffer when I run new screen session o I
reuse a previous suspend screen session
When I'm inside a screen session and I select with mouse some text,
then copy it with right click into buffer, when I exit from screen and
return into terminal session, the copy/paste buffer is not clean and I
can paste the previous copy text via right click or press the middle
mouse button.
But if I copy some text previous to run a screen, then run a new screen
or reuse a suspend screen, when I'm inside the screen the copy buffer
is empty and I do no t can paste it in any way.
It's possible disable this "clean copy buffer feature" of the screen?
Many thanks

Bug in cups web interface?
by Tom Horsley
I used localhost:631 last night to turn on the global setting
to make my printers visible on the network. It said it was
restarting the server, but apparently all it did was stop
the server until I manually did a "systemctl start cups"
in a root window.
Anyone else noticed this? If I wanted to report it
would just "cups" be the right component to use in
bugzilla?

Which VirtualBox repo to use?
by Eyal Lebedinsky
I have been using VirtualBox for a long while. Looking at what rpms are available I see:
$ dnf list '*VirtualBox*'

Which repo [virtualbox (Oracle) or rpmfusion] should one use?
Is Oracle simply a more up-to-date repo? Does rpmfusion packages actually fetch
the Oracle rpm, or is rpmfusion a separate, full build?
The size difference is significant:
rpmfusion VirtualBox-5.2.8-2.fc26.x86_64.rpm 8.1MB
virtualbox VirtualBox-5.2-5.2.8_121009_fedora26-1.x86_64.rpm 69 MB
If the two are different: if I change to use the rpmfusion repo, will the VMs be compatible?
TIA

how to use a systemd service, without making it persistent ?
by sean darcy
I want to start a systemd service (dhcpd) , but only if a link to the
internet is present. I don't want the service to start on boot.
systemctl start <service> doesn't work unless the service is enabled.
This works, but it's very kludgy:
if <link to internet>
systemctl enable <service>
systemctl start <service>
systemctl disable <service>
fi
Any better ideas ?

last friday, i did a system-upgrade from f27 to f28 beta, and
everything worked fine. did a couple "dnf update"s, and also one "dnf
autoremove", where i glanced at the packages that would be removed,
and nothing looked critical, and i'm pretty sure i've used gthumb
since then.
this issue popped up less than an hour ago, and i have no idea what
i might have done to provoke it. i'm checking google and bugzilla, but
still, i have no idea what i could have done to cause this. is anyone
else who upgraded to f28 beta seeing this?

How to install compiler package.
by sales@wexfordpress.com
Installed Fedora 26 on recommendation of a Scribus developer. Installed about 30 packages per his advice.
But when I try to compile a program the machine can't find C++. So what is the package I need to install to compile C++ programs?.
Another question. On Slackware (yes I am one of those) I can use kdm to get to a window function ( I preferXFCE).
How do I set up a window manager in Fedora and how do I access it?
All advice welcome and appreciaated.

how to correctly log without journald (and its blobs)?
by Franta Hanzlík
In previous Fedora distros was (IMHO) right way to log only to syslog,
without journald and its (for me) unwanted annoying binary logs, by using
configuration as:
*) Set systemd log target to syslog:
systemd.log_target=syslog (syslog-or-kmsg) ---- on kernel cmdline
systemd.default_standard_output=syslog --/
and
LogTarget=syslog ---- in systemd.conf
DefaultStandardOutput=syslog --/
*) configuring rsyslog to listen on /dev/log unix socket:
$SystemLogSocketName /dev/log ------ in rsyslog.conf
$ModLoad imuxsock ----/
$OmitLocalLogging off ---/
$AddUnixListenSocket /run/systemd/journal/syslog --/(legacy directives)
$AddUnixListenSocket /run/systemd/journal/socket -/
$AddUnixListenSocket /run/systemd/journal/stdout /
(not sure when all last three directives needed)
*) prevent to run journald:
systemctl mask systemd-journald.service
(and maybe mask systemd-journal-flush.service)
And it works fine.
But in actual Fedora 24 in systemd man page values syslog-or-kmsg and
syslog are missing in LogTarget option. As systemd/journald man pages
say hardly anything about exact mean of appropriate configuration for
this purpose, then please when someone more knowledgeable can advise:
- where to direct the systemd output? Maybe to kmsg an then read it in
rsyslog via imklog?
(rsyslog should have also imkmsg module, but is not in rsyslog-8.12.0-3.fc24)
- what about /run/log/journal/.../system.journal ?
On my test F24 system it have open rsyslogd, abrt-dump-journal-oops and
abrt-dump-journal-xorg (no need for these last two) processes. Uses it
also something else?
- what about /run/systemd/journal/{dev-log,socket,stdout} unix sockets?
Should rsyslogd listen on them?
- /dev/log seems be now symlink to /run/systemd/journal/dev-log socket
(as defined by systemd-journald-dev-log.socket) Should it be left
(because now something sends to /run/systemd/journal/dev-log), or can
be /run/systemd/journal/dev-log removed?
Thanks in advance for some clarification about this.

Evolution Calendar Time Zones
by Will W
Hello all,
Been a long time since I have been on this list.
I have a question on Evolution calendar. Hopefully I explain this
right....
When I create an entry in the calendar (New York time zone) Everything
is fine, but when I edit it the time zone goes to UTC. The system is
set to use the NY time zone.
Weird!! Tried to a search on google but nothing really comes up on
this. Not sure if it a bug or it is a setting somewhere I missed.
Thanks,
Will W
