nautilus won't start after upgrade
by sixpack13
Hi
did an upgrade to F28 on my brothers box.
All went smooth.
Problem now: Nautilus is unable to start.
did a nautilus -c on command line with user account: nothing
starting nautilus with root account from command line: nautilus starts
reinstalling all nautilus packages doesn't fix it.
Ideas ?
Hint:
after upgrade I run dnf autoremove, but in my sight it shouldn't has (had ?) broken anything, cause nautilus still starts with root account, but even ONLY with root account.
nautilus -c as root outputs the same (errors) as on my box (upgrade from April's beta).

F28: Why doesn't NIS work?
by Tom Horsley
I've got ypbin running.
I can do a "ypcat passwd" and see the user defined
The home directory and the shell both exist for that user
The /etc/nsswitch.conf file has "files nis" for passwd, shadow, and group.
But I get this in /var/log/secure:
May 4 15:14:38 tomh login: FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM tty3 FOR tom, Authentication failure
or if I try to ssh in, I get:
May 4 15:02:18 tomh sshd[13139]: fatal: Access denied for user tom by PAM account configuration [preauth]
What new mystery has been introduced to the configuration of ypbind and NIS?

Any trick to booting off a eufi USB flash drive?
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Fedora 28, x64
$ rpm -qa \*qemu-kvm\*
qemu-kvm-2.11.1-2.fc28.x86_64
I set up a VM to test bootable flash drives. The
only ones it will boot are standard boot drives and
not eufi drives.
Is there any trick to booting off a eufi USB
flash drive?
Many thanks,
-T

No graphical boot, but wayland comes up in gnome3
by Tom Horsley
With this video card:
NVIDIA Corporation GM206 [GeForce GTX 960] (rev a1)
when I boot the system I see a handful of funny errors
that go past too fast, then the screen turns blank, the
animated fedora logo never appears, but eventually
the login screen pops up and things seem to work OK
from that point.
Looks like a hint I should install the nvidia drivers
from rpmfusion rather than sticking with nouveau :-).

desktop background image
by Jeffrey Ross
I upgraded my system to Fedora 28 (from 26 -> 27 -> 28) and when I
upgraded to 28 I no longer had a desktop background image, the desktop
was simply "black". I dismissed it as a minor issue and loaded a
background image, I did this from Firefox, I had an image up and
selected "set as desktop image" the image was loaded onto the desktop
and survived several system reloads.
Today I updated the system with DNF, the following were installed/upgrade:

After upgrade F27->F28: Gnome does not start properly (hangs?)
by Jouk Jansen
Hi All,
I upgraded one of my machines from F27 to F28 by command line dnf-upgrade.
All did run without problem until the machine rebooted itself. After the
"fedora F" the screen freezes with only a pointer in view, which does not
move when I move the mouse.
Luckely I could connect to the machine using ssh. From there every thing
seems fine. I looked into /var/log/boot.log :
[root@foxtrot log]# tail boot.log
Starting Network Manager Wait Online...
[ OK ] Started /etc/rc.d/rc.local Compatibility.
[ OK ] Started Permit User Sessions.
Starting Hold until boot process finishes up...
Starting GNOME Display Manager...
[ OK ] Started Job spooling tools.
[ OK ] Started Command Scheduler.
[ OK ] Started Xinetd A Powerful Replacement For Inetd.
[ OK ] Started OpenSSH server daemon.
[ OK ] Started GNOME Display Manager.
If I reboot the machine and do a <CTRL><ALT><BACKSPACE> early in the process
the console gives all [OK]'s. I alsi see a few lines in the end which do not
seem to be in the boot.log (I hope I type them without error):
[OK] Reached target User and Group Name Lookups.
Sarting Accounts Service...
Starting Authorization Manager...
[OK] Started Authorization Manager.
[OK] Started Accounts Service.
[OK] Started Virtualization daemon.
[OK] Created slice User Slice of gdm.
Starting User Manager for UID 42...
[OK] Started Session c1 for user gdm.
[OK] Started User Manager for UID 42.
After this the console seems dead.
What could be the problem?
thanks in advance
Jouk Jansen

Very slow boot in F27 after recent update
by Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
I'm in F27.
After updates of two days ago (the previous update was about one week ago
if I remember correctly) the boot has become quite slow.
It seems due to something related to Network / NetworkManager-wait-online
service
It seems both ntp client and GSSAPI Proxy wait for some minutes...
I had also to change from gdm to lightdm because for some reason it was not
able to start (at least for some minutes).
This happens on my laptop, both if I have network cable connected and if I
have no network during boot.
Before the boot was immediate to gdm login page independently from network
status
Going to check what was updated I don't find anything related to
NetworkManager, but something related to boost... did it change anything in
the logic?
Here below the list of updated packages (no change in behavior if I use an
older kernel to boot).
Thanks in advance for any insight / help
Ginaluca

HEIC image files -
by Bob Goodwin
.
I have several .HEIC image files among some iPhone camera files. Some
googling yells me Apple is doing something to make it an alternative to
.JPEG but most of the information I find sounds like the blind leading
the blind.
I don't think I have anything that will display them, can we deal with
them somehow? Or perhaps I missed something?
