Sharing a USB drive with Samba ?
by linux guy
Hi people.
I'm running Samba on Fedora 31. It's working great.
I want to share a USB drive using Samba. I've tried mounting it to a
directory within a Samba share and it does work due to permission errors.
- I create the mount directory (USB) as a normal user, thus giving it
"normal" permissions. Fore test purposes, I can r/w/x files to this
directory with no problems.
- I mount the USB device to the mount directory using mount /dev/sdb1
USB.
- I can access the USB directory from the server and r/w/x everything just
fine.
- When I try to access the share/USB directory from the client, like
Dolphin, it requests permission in the form of user and password. The user
and password that I use to access the share do not work. Nor does the user
and password I use to access the server.
What am I missing ?
How does one share a USB device via Samba ?
Thanks

On my machine I only get

Prevent turning off external monitor when playing audio though HDMI
by Robert Mihaly
Hi everyone,
I have an external monitor connected via HDMI which has better sounding speakers than the internal ones. Sometimes I leave the machine idle while keep playing audio on it, but shortly after the lock screen kicks the external monitor is turned off (power saving I guess) and the audio switches back to the internal speakers. I use Fedora Workstation 31, Gnome 3.34.1, PulseAudio 13.0, Kernel 5.3.11.
Does anyone know about a way to prevent turning off the external monitor when audio is being played through the HDMI port? I would still like to have the lock screen, even blanking it, but without turning it off and keep using the external monitor speakers. Currently I use Spotify from Flathub for playing music and when I make a break and leave the music on, after few minutes it switches back to the internal speakers, that have worse quality especially if I am away from the machine.
I have seen this same question raised in other forums [1][2][3], but couldn't see solutions, so wanted to try to ask here in case anyone knows a way to deal with this.

/etc/crypto-policies/back-ends/opensshserver.config is the default file of
the system.
/etc/sysconfig/sshd-permitrootlogin does not exists (and we do not try to
logon as root anyway.
/etc/sysconfig/sshd : In this file the CRYPTO_POLICY= line is uncommented to
allow for more cyphers. (I try to connect from a machine with not the newest
cyphers (yes I know the risk))
It used to work on a F30 system, which crashed and is now fresh installed
with F31. Can it be that I have to add more cyphers to the
/etc/ssh/sshd_conf files? (the public key from the client machine starts
with : ssh-rsa)

Hi all;
I've just installed Fedora 31, on a thinkpad P51s
Every time I shutdown it hangs with the following text and never powers off.
Any thoughts on how to debug this?
Thanks in advance.

filter for up-arrow in terminal
by SternData
A long time ago, in an operating system far, far away I used a tool
called PCED. It had one really nice feature: If I had typed a command like
copy a b
it saved it, just like bash does. But when I typed
copy
and pressed up-arrow, it would filter the history entries and show only
those that started with "copy".
I'm already using autojump for the cd command. Is there something to
provide this filter on using up-arrow to scroll through past commands?

Fedora 31 - pam_u2f - Yubikey 5
by Winfried de Heiden
Hi all,
Using Fedora 31, pam_u2f and a Yubikey5 works well after:
authselect select sssd with-mkhomedir with-pam-u2f with-sudo without-
nullok
and
pamu2fcfg –u[username] > ~/.config/Yubico/u2f_keys
However, from the console (without GDM, multi-user.target for example)
it does not work: Linux will ask for my password where the yubikey
should be sufficient.
Any ideas what could be wrong?

I have chrony running and pointing to my ISP's time server, not the Fedora
pool, so it's always the same NTP server.
This box is up 24/7, and I just rebooted it. And I get this, after a reboot:
Nov 23 08:53:10 shorty chronyd[992]: System clock TAI offset set to 37 seconds
Nov 23 08:53:10 shorty chronyd[992]: System clock wrong by -5.652285 seconds, adjustment started
Nov 23 08:53:10 shorty chronyd[992]: System clock was stepped by -5.652285 seconds
This was a reboot, and not a shutdown.
I believe that something should be saving the system time to the hardware
clock, so after a reboot things are more or less where they are, and this
looks like is not happening. I should not have chrony adjust time by that
much after a reboot. Anyone know where to investigate this further?
