update not working correctly
by John Mellor
I update my desktop machine every few days, normally using the Gnome
software tool from the updates tab. This is a fast i7 with a good SSD
and 32GB of memory, and it normally boots to login in about 5 seconds.
As an aside, for some weird reason way beyond what makes sense on a
machine with an inode-based filesystem, the Gnome software tool has a
problem where it almost always wants to reboot to apply the changes.
That's an inconvenience that I assume that the Gnome people are fixing
some day. I don;t know if there is a bug tracking that more minor issue.
However, there is a more serious issue. Starting with Fedora 31, there
are really good odds that the reboot does a grub hard stop with a
message about a corrupt compressed file. I have to reboot manually
several times, and eventually it comes up just as if nothing was wrong.
This says to me that there is something either incorrectly async in the
updater, or there is a missing state check in the update reboot
sequence. Is anyone else having this issue?

usb thumb drive problem?
by home user
(Fedora-30)
After doing my weekly incremental back-up, I noticed too much of a drop
in unused space on my USB thumbdrive was unusually low. When I look
inside the end that goes into the port, it's black, which I believe
means it's a USB-2 stick. It's 16GB.
I tried "Disk Usage Analyzer". Nice graphs, but no indication of
problems. This is true both when run as root and when run as a common user.
I tried "Gnome Disks".
1. When I click the part of the graph marked "Filesystem Partition 1 16
GB FAT", it shows beneath the display:
Size 16 GB - 9.9 GB free (38.0% full)
Device /dev/sdb1
UUID 3900-1AD5
Partition Type W95 FAT32 (LBA)
Contents FAT (32-bit version) - Mounted at /run/media/[etc]
2. At the bottom of the display, I click the two gears, and select
"Check Filesystem...". After confirming, after a couple of seconds, I
get a pop-up saying
Filesystem damaged
Filesystem vfat on needs repairing.
Results are the same when run as a common user as when run as root.
GSmartControl seems to not know what to do with this thumbdrive.
That's it. Are there any other tools that can tell me more, like how
much space is unusable, or how many blocks(?) are damaged? If I ask
"Gnome Disks" to try to repair the filesystem, how much risk is there of
losing data? Is this thumbdrive on its deathbed?
thanks,
Bill.

ASUS VivoBook Pro N705FD Notebook - boots to setup screen every time
by S.Bob
All;
I've managed to install Fedora 31 on a new ASUS VivoBook Pro N705FD
Notebook. I've run a full dnf update. Every time I boot it boots to the
setup screen (the one you see at first boot), then the mouse goes away
and it hangs for like 2 minutes. Then it goes to the login screen and
the mouse is back.
Anyone have any ideas what this could be? how t debug it?
I get the same results with Fedora 30
Thanks

ASUS VivoBook Pro N705FD Notebook - cannot boot from USB
by S.Bob
All;
I just bought a new ASUS VivoBook Pro N705FD Notebook, the bios does not
seem to allow booting from USB, disables fastboot and secureboot, there
is still no USB Boot option, or even a CSM option.
Anyone know how to do this?
Thanks

gcc vs gfortran
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
Several times I called a fortran routine from a c program, it was OK.
I am trying to do the same with complex numbers in the call.
Is it a problem ?
in c, I use double complex
in f95, I use COMPLEX*16
my fortran cade translated to c by f2c does not work
I get a segmentation fault:
are the formats of the complex incompatible different?
Do I need to add a compilation option?
Thank.

F31: /etc/resolv.conf disappears
by Frank Elsner
Hi all,
my Fedora 31 system using NM for wifi shows the following behaviour:
From time to time the /etc/resolv.conf file disappears.
Even re-connecting doesn't help. I get an IP but no nameserver.
What might be the reason? And how to fix?
Greetings,

Firefox issues with Fedora 31?
by Jeffrey Ross
After upgrading to Fedora 31 I've run into an issue with Firefox, I can
no longer detach a tab from the browser to put it into its own window.
I can drag a tab to another open browser window or to another position
within the same browser window but I can not drag it to a new window by
itself.
If I right click on the tab I can choose move and then move to a new
window, that will work.
Ideas?
Thanks, Jeff

Gnome-keyring-daemon keeps logging every second
by Robin Lee
Hi
On my newly upgraded Fedora 31 desktop there is annoying issue. Every
second gnome-keyring-daemon logs the following message
"asked to register item /org/freedesktop/secrets/collection/login/86,
but it's already registered". Rebooting doesn't help.
It totally fills up the log, anything I can do about it?
Cheers
Robin
