Very slow DNF update and a workabound

I'll been putting up with very slow dnf update for a while. strace showed that it was reading /var/lib/rpm/Packages 4KiB at a time. My /var/lib/rpm/Packages is 118MiB so that takes a while on a hard disk around 60s. My desktop is i7 4GHz CPU 16GiB of ram. Unless there is a way to configure DNF to use bigger reads this hack speeds it up. # cat /var/lib/rpm/* > /dev/null; dnf update --refresh After the cat of the files Packages will be in kernel buffers and then dnf runs in 1s-2s. Do you want a bug report on this issue? Barry

Persistent data on specific directory in a LiveUSB

Hi there, There is an option in liveUSB creation to make /home to keep persistent data ( --home-size-mb <https://www.mankier.com/8/livecd-iso-to-disk#--home-size-mb> ). Can we make specific partition other than /home to use as persistent data storage? for example, /opt or /var. VirtualBox shared folder looses connection after a while

Dear All, With the most recent versions of VirtualBox, the shared folder is not working properly as before. My guest machine is running Windows 7, and the shared folder works fine during some time. However, after some time, the connection to the shared folder gets lost. Are other people experiencing the same? Any workaround? Thanks in advance, Paul

Sometime recently systemd has decided to shutdown the network interfaces before it unmounts all the NFS filesystems, thus resulting in about a 5 minute timeout on reboot. I've now added code to my pre-reboot script to umount -l and umount -f every nfs filesystem prior to really rebooting, and I can reboot without the 5 minute delay now (sheesh).

Hello, The version of sagemath that I run sagemath-8.0-2.fc28.x86_64, gives me an error: Oops, Sage crashed. We do our best to make it stable, but.. Should I try to compile the version 8.5 for my fedora 28? Hi,I would like to install Windows 10 via F29. Does anyone know where to find the Winusb rpm? The link https://fedora.pkgs.org/29/rpm-sphere/winusb-1.0.11-10.1.x86_64.rpm.html seems to be empty for this rpm.Thanx in advanceJöerg

vcgencmd missing in Fedora 29 arm

Hi to all, I'm new both in the ARM and Raspberri Pi world. Managed to install Fedora 29 Server on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ with an USB SSD. The system works flawlessly but I can't find vcgencmd and relative commands to manage the hardware of the RPI. Looked for an RPM package but I can't find nothing. Is there a package with tools to manage HW? Temperature, CPU Frequency, and so on. Or is better to replace vcgencmd with something else? Thanks in advance Simo

Shredding a removable drive (OT)

I'm using shred on some 2Tb USB disk drive that I plan to give away. So far it has taken 8 hours to shred 50% of the drive, which implies that it will take about 16 hours to shred the whole drive. I have another 2 drives to go. Is there a quicker way to protect my data when I give the drives away, other than smashing the drives to bits? Thanks - jon
