how aliases for man pages are supported? [OT?]
by Robert P. J. Day
while this is happening on my fedora 30 branched system, i'm fairly
sure the question corresponds to a regular system with man pages.
how does one establish an alias for an existing man page if it's not
done in the "obvious" way? as an example, currently on my system,
under /usr/share/man/man5, i have these two entries:
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 4807 Feb 1 15:19 utmp.5.gz
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 36 Feb 1 15:19 utmpx.5.gz
predictably, both of the following generate the same man page:
$ man 5 utmp
$ man 5 utmpx
because the smaller of the two files is simply a reference to the
other:
$ gunzip -c utmpx.5.gz
.so man5/utmp.5
$
however, i recently installed the package "containers-common", which
installed (among other things) the single man page file under
/usr/share/man/man5:
/usr/share/man/man5/containers-storage.conf.5.gz
with that installed, both of the following commands work fine and
generate the same output:
$ man 5 containers-storage.conf
$ man 5 storage.conf
but i see no "shortcut" file in that directory to support the second
form, so i'm assuming there is some other mechanism by which this can
be done, i just don't know what it is. thoughts?

What's up with Firefox
by Robin Lee
So I just updated my Fedora 29 desktop and now the title bar in Firefox
is gone. How is one to minimize a Firefox window nowadays? How can I
make Firefox behave like all the other Gnome app windows?

Gnome session restore
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I'm experimenting with Gnome (I'm a long-standing KDE user), but can't
figure out how to save and restore a login session, i.e. restore all
open apps after logging in, including window placement on several
virtual desktops.
Surely this is possible, but how?

Mounting internal disk spins up connected external USB disks
by Wolfgang Pfeiffer
Mounting an internally installed disk on a laptop spins up all
disks connected to this machine via USB. And I try to prevent these
externally connected disks to spin up.
The behaviour, IIRC, started a few months ago on the previous F27 and
continues now on F28. Before that I don't remember this behaviour to
have happened.
I thought it was some smartd issue, and stopped this service
("/usr/bin/systemctl stop smartd.service") - to no avail: mounting the
internal disk still spins up the external ones.
The internal disk is identified by "smartctl -d test /dev/sda" like
so:
[ ... ]
/dev/sda: Device of type 'scsi' [SCSI] detected
/dev/sda [SAT]: Device open changed type from 'scsi' to 'sat'
/dev/sda [SAT]: Device of type 'sat' [ATA] opened
(On a side note: I'm astonished that a smartctl simple info flag is
changing some device type like shown above)
External disks are identified by a smartctl test like so:
One:
"[USB Sunplus]: Device of type 'usbsunplus' [ATA] detected"
the other one:
"[SAT]: Device of type 'sat' [ATA] detected"
Anyone an idea about where to start investigating this issue? Where
could such behaviour possibly be set up?
Thanks in anticipation.

emacs CC mode package
by Sam Varshavchik
Well, is there one? "dnf list" finds nothing useful. I am refererring
specifically to this: https://sourceforge.net/projects/cc-mode/
It describes itself as "a standard package in both GNU Emacs and XEmacs",
but I have emacs installed, and looking for the files in that package's
tarball, I don't see them.
After concluding that it would be faster to just write a spec file, then to
continue digging, that's what I did. I don't have the cycles to maintain
this package for Fedora, if anyone's interested I'll send them the spec
file, but this was pretty simple to package.

KompoZer?
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Fedora 29
I use Kompozer a lot, but it is not maintained and
is riddled with bugs.
Any replacements for it? I use Bluefish, but it takes
me four times as long to do anything as KompoZer
Many thanks,

OT: using MS Graph to retrieve e-mail from Office 365 and deliver
to linux MTA on F29
by Ranjan Maitra
Dear friends,
Our workplace recently switched to OTP-based two factor authentication with Office 365 and mandated everyone to use the browser, Windoze or Evolution. We want to do none but get e-mail the old-fashioned way, delivered to my local HDD and read by my mailer. Looking around, we have successfully written python code to get e-mail using MS Graph. But following the examples there, we can retrieve e-mail in json format and needs further processing before it can go to a MTA. I am not sure that procmail will work, so I am wondering how to deliver mail to my HDD in Mbox format (to be read by sylpheed or some other e-mailer).
But, is json format the only way to extract these e-mails? Or are there other options available that are friendlier for more general MTAs? Otherwise, how does one get these e-mails in a Mbox format?
Sorry if my question is not very clear: we are very new to this and still struggling to understand everything.
Many thanks for any helpful pointers and references, and best wishes,
Ranjan

usb creator?
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Do we have something like this
https://pkgs.org/download/usb-creator-gtk
kicking around under another name?
Target is to create bootable SUB sticks from iso's that
don't follow dd convention for iso's, such as M$ iso's.
Many thanks,

OT: F29's google-authenticator in headless mode
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I am not sure if this question makes a lot of sense, but is it possible to run google-authenticator in headless mode? Basically, I am thinking of a process which will run the authenticator to get the digits dumped somewhere from where another process can pick it up and put in some python or similar source code? Is this a practical proposition?
Many thanks,
Ranjan
