VNC shows black screen
by Chris Kottaridis
I am trying to get Tiger VNC working on a home machine running Fedora 29
with latest patches applied.
I can connect and provide user's password but the screen is blank.
On initial connection I got the Welcome Window that asked for keyboard
style and such, but when I closed that window nothing but a black screen
and that's all I get now when I log in. If I remove the user and add her
back I get the Welcome Window again, but when that is done again black
screen. Essentially there is no way to start an application and nothing
setting the background. Seems the window manager isn't getting control
or something.
I have:
Environment=XDG_SESSION_TYPE=x11
In the /etc/systemd/system/vncserver-karen@.service file, which some
sites have indicated may be needed. I have tried a couple of
combinations of the .vnc/xstartup I've seen from various places, but am
back to the original:
#!/bin/sh
unset SESSION_MANAGER
unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
I have this working fine on a Fedora 29 machine at work. All the files I
know of to compare I have and they seem the same, like the ones
mentioned above.
I attached the output of "systemctl status vncserver-karen@:2.service".
It looks like everything is started fine. I haven't found any error
messages that seem to apply.
I saw some comments that selinux could be an issue. I have selinux
disabled both in the /etc/selinux/config file:
# SELINUX= can take one of these three values:
# enforcing - SELinux security policy is enforced.
# permissive - SELinux prints warnings instead of enforcing.
# disabled - No SELinux policy is loaded.
SELINUX=disabled
Also from command line I can see it isn't enabled:
$ getenforce
Disabled
The gnome-session-binary seems to be running according to systemctl
output. I just don't know why it doesn't seem to be taking control of
things.
Any pointers or suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks

F29: force evolution mailer to use proxy server
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I am trying to get evolution to use a http and https proxy server. I have set the http and https as my proxy servers and it ignores it. I wonder what I am doing wrong?
I am not quite sure what additional information to post here, so please feel free to ask.
Many thanks for any help and best wishes,
Ranjan

Can't use MATE desktop with F29
by Paolo Galtieri
Folks,
I upgraded one of my F28 systems to F29. I installed th Gnome
Classic and MATE desktops. When the system boots up and I login using
the MATE desktop the screen is completely garbled. A message appears
saying something like "required virtual size does not fit", however it
goes away almost immediately so I can't get all the text. If I login
using Gnome or Gnome Classic everything works fine. I also tries gdm
and I get the same thing. Anyone know what's going on?

Can't play video dvd
by Paolo Galtieri
Folks,
I recently purchased the DVD "Free Solo". When I try to play it on
my Fedora 28 system it fails. I get the following error "An error
occurred The movie could not be read". I did some web searching and I
found that someone also encountered this error and that I needed to
install libdvdcss for things to work. I installed this library and
rebooted and I still get the error. I have verified that the DVD works
by playing it on a Windows system. So what am I missing in order to get
this to work? When I put the DVD in it does read it, because I get the
title page, but when I click on the play movie link I get the error.
The "Free Solo" DVD is from National Geographic, so I tried another DVD,
also from National Geographic, and that one worked fine. So the problem
seems to be with how F28 processes the "Free Solo" DVD.
Any help is appreciated.

F28 - Thunar crashes regularly
by Robert Moskowitz
F28 with Xfce. Thunar 1.6.16
Thunar crashes regularly. Seems to be 'connected' to accessing external
devices like 4TB USB drives and Android phone via libmtp and gvfs-mtp (I
think :) ).
Rather recent. I have always had challenges with my Android (Galaxy S4)
with very slow time opening up a directory. Just viewing and dropping
files into a high-level folder (like movies) is fast, but opening a
folder like Sound to get voice recordings takes a lot of time.
Here is a message on the thunar crash last:
Feb 25 10:59:27 lx121e abrt-server[32461]: Deleting problem directory

Feb 25 10:59:28 lx121e abrt-notification[32500]: Process 30418 (thunar)

I am current with updates as of Feb 22.

Recompilation
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
I had a discussion with people in charge of a big machine.
They suggested me to recompile the libraries that I use (like gsl).
What do you think ?

Urgent: Can't print

Hi All,

This morning I can not longer print.
I fired up a Live USB, also Fedora 29, and I can print,
so it is not my hardware. (It is not program dependent
either.)
https://127.0.0.1:631/printers/B4350 tells me "Processing since".
I can cancel jobs.
This is the error message I am getting:

Re: Have you used Duplicati 2.0.4.5 to backup Fedora 29 Server?

I did never use Duplicati, but I use duplicity for a long time and with
good results. I made a few backup scripts and start them via SystemD to
make incremental backups to a backup storage server. The backups come
from the main server as well as the clients. I never ran into problem
and all backups are encrypted using a OpenPGP (GnuPG) encryption key.
That would be my suggestion if you don't rely on Duplicati as software
solution.

Two package dependency problems in F30 during updates.
by Robert G. (Doc) Savage
Not sure F30 is supported yet, but there's apparently a couple of dependency problems with glassfish-jax-rs-api and eclipse-linuxtools-dockeras currently released. I installed F30 from the MATE_Compiz spin. Things went fine for a couple of weeks until this happened a couple of days ago:
