Thunar confused by kernel 5.0.5
by Sam Varshavchik
Is anyone running XFCE seeing Thunar being very confused when booting kernel
5.0.5? Mine no longer automounts my removable usb storage mp3 player. As a
consolation prize, of sorts, Thunar informs me that /boot, /home, /sys, and
the like, are removable volumes, and shows a folder icon for each one of
them on the desktop. With an option to unmount them, of course.
Plugging and unplugging the USB device is detected, in some way, with the
typical stuff showing up in /var/log/messages, but thunar doesn't see it.
Everything's fine in 5.0.4.

30 upgrade does not take
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
This is what I am running to upgrade from 29 to 30 beta:
# rpm --rebuilddb
# rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
if anything is too new, do a
# dnf downgrade offender(s)
# dnf --enablerepo=* update --refresh
# dnf install python3-dnf-plugin-system-upgrade
# dnf system-upgrade download --refresh --releasever=30 --allowerasing
--best
# dnf clean packages <-- optional
# dnf system-upgrade reboot
When I run the "dnf system-upgrade reboot", it reboots, tells
me an upgrade is on progress, and about five second later,
reboots again, shows no 30 kernels, and I am back in 29.
What did I do wrong?
Many thanks,

Xfce 4.14?
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Fedora 29
Xfce 4.13
I have a customer interested in me putting Fedora 29
on a laptop.
Problem: Xfce 4.13 is too buggy to release on the general
public. Me, I am loyal and know how to cope with the bugs,
but a typical user, I would not wish that on them.
Is 4.14 anywhere near?
If not, is there a way to lock Fedora 29 into Xfce 4.12?
If not, I guess Mate would be the closest alternative.
I could always go with gnome, but it has a bad case of
the weirds.
Many thanks,

smartmontools issue
by Eyal Lebedinsky
fedora 28 up-to-date.
I have a new array, not yet commissioned, and one disk now complains
Device: /dev/sde [SAT], FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!
and the reason, I understand, is this
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAGS VALUE WORST THRESH FAIL RAW_VALUE
200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate PO---K 001 001 001 NOW 0
My issue is that the disk works fine and never had any errors reported.
Also, smartmontools db does not include this disk
ST12000NM0007-2A1101
and
update-smart-drivedb
is failing with
/usr/share/smartmontools/drivedb.h.error.raw: *** BAD signature ***
I know that some disks report funny numbers and smartmontools needs to know which
one to trust. I see a relevant ticket from 2018-06-15....
https://www.smartmontools.org/attachment/ticket/1042/smartctl-SEAGATE-ST1...
And I see that smartmontools has other issues with these disks:
Write SCT (Get) Feature Control Command failed: scsi error badly formed scsi parameters
Wt Cache Reorder: Unknown (SCT Feature Control command failed)
I ran some short and long smart tests but all failed immediately.
SMART Extended Self-test Log Version: 1 (1 sectors)
Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error
# 1 Extended offline Completed: unknown failure 90% 250 0
# 2 Short offline Completed: unknown failure 90% 247 0
# 3 Short offline Completed: unknown failure 90% 247 0
# 4 Extended offline Completed without error 00% 17 -
The other (identical) disks in the array report
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAGS VALUE WORST THRESH FAIL RAW_VALUE
200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate PO---K 100 100 001 - 0
I can request a replacement, but want to ensure that this is not just a smart software issue which
may pop up again on another disk.
Should we have smartmontools v7.0 (released end of last year) by now? It includes this disk.
As I mentioned, the array is not yet commissioned and I can afford to fiddle with it for a while.
TIA

qemu goes to 100%?
by Tom Horsley
Here's a weird one I just noticed: I've been using a
Windows 10 virtual machine to run my tax software.
I've got it displayed in virt-viewer and all is
well, then I close the virt-viewer window and
leave the KVM running. About 5 minutes later I
see a cpu suddenly pegged at 100%. I run top and see
that qemu is the culprit. I start virt-viewer
again, and it goes back to normal.
Anyone else seen this? Why would nobody looking at
it make it go crazy I wonder?

Need a statement on Fedora's purpose
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
I just had a vendor tell me they do not support Fedora Server
because the the developers of Fedora had stated that it is not
a stable release and is used only as a testing ground for Red
Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). And as such, they only supported
RHEL and Cent OS.
Huh ??????
Fedora is more stable in my experience that RHEL ever was. When
I was running Scientific Linux (clone of RHEL of CentOS) I
almost went INSANE!
Is there a statement from the Fedora developers somewhere that
I could send this vendor to straighten him out?
Many thanks,
