quick (I hope) e-mail security question.
by home user
I just received a message from
[sender](a)gmail.com
but the last line in the message is a bluish line saying
"Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android"
I do know someone named [sender] but the from address is not what I have
for that person, though the sender could have gotten a new e-mail
address very recently. Also, the from address being a Google e-mail
address seems to contradict the last line saying the message was sent
from Yahoo Mail. Is this message probably genuine or probably a spoof?
thanks,
Bill.

gfs file sharing
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
I heard o a you tube video about a file sharing technique
called gfs. I may has misunderstood the letters as I
have trouble with high frequency hearing.
Is there other alternatives out there for cross platform
file sharing other than Samba? (I know about NFS.)
Many thanks,

Manually installed grub (no bls) doesn't update entries automatically
on kernel install or removal.
by Sergio Cipolla
I have a legacy BIOS. I didn't install grub through anaconda, instead I installed it manually (as per https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?313824 ) to a partition so as to be able to use the Windows boot loader. All went well.
I noticed grub was installed the traditional way (not the new bls) so I can just edit /etc/default/grub and run grub2-mkconfig for any modification I want.
The only issue, so to speak (because I don't know if it's a bug or a setting), is that on new kernel installations or kernel removals, I must manually run grub2-mkconfig to re-generate grub.cfg
The Fedora documentation (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/GRUB_2#Updating_GRUB_2_configuration_on_BI...), which describes the old behaviour, states that 'Grubby in Fedora patches the configuration when a kernel update is performed'. So maybe, with the new bls thing, the kernel scriptlets aren't using this any more.
Anybody knows anything about it? Can I set something so 'grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg' is called again automatically on kernel install or removal?

utility of gnome-keyring and secret-tool
by François Patte
Bonjour,
I am curious to know what is the utility of gnome-keyring: I stored a
password for msmtp using secret-tool, and going to
.local/share/keyrings/ I can read this password clearly stored in a
file in this directory.....
So, there is absolutely no secret!
Thank you for lights.
PS. Why is secret-tool not working for root?

Opening Files With Root Privilege?.....
by Eddie G. O'Connor Jr.
Hello all,
There was a time when you could go to the terminal and type in "sudo
nautilus" and you'd get the file system to open with root powers so that
you could do things and manipulate files. This seems to have been
removed / stopped / taken away? So how do I gain the ability to work on
files / folders or directories now? Can anyone point me in the right
direction here?
Thanks!

What to do instead of using rc.local?
by Tim
Hi,
For the last umpteen years, I did this in /etc/rc.local:
su tim -c "/usr/bin/fetchmail -d 900"
And likewise, for several other users, but with different time periods
to minimise overlaps.
But that won't work, anymore. The log returns:
rc.local: fetchmail: open: /home/tim/.fetchmailrc: Permission denied
My /home/tim permissions always were, and always will be:
drwx------. 24 tim tim 4096 Jul 10 21:23 tim
I won't be making the permissions more permissive.
So, how do I do something equivalent? (That auto-starts the fetchmail
daemon going any time the server is booted, and doesn't require the
user to log on.)

tracer told me to systemctl restart dbus-broker - bad move
by Robert Moskowitz
Whenever I do an dnf update, I run tracer to see what action I need to
take. This morning it informed me to run:
sudo systemctl restart dbus-broker
I did and it seemed to crash everything. Lost my gui, went back to the
console log. Had to power off and start anew.

VLC midi support
by Robert Moskowitz
I found an old 3.5' diskette with some midi files from back in '96.
Does anyone know what I have to install in VLC to listen to them?
thanks
