Upgrade of F30 to F31 Appears to Have not Worked Correctly
by Stephen Morris
Hi,
I have just upgraded to F31 from F30 using dnf system-upgrade
download --releasever=31. Before I did the upgrade I updated F30 to the
latest maintenance level.
When I booted into Gnome on F31 there was no activities menu to be
able to launch any application, the only way I could launch applications
(if I knew the application command) was to use alt-f2.
In F30 I was using dash-to-dock but in the F31 upgrade that failed
to start. I did find an entry on the net saying that V66 of dash-to-dock
had an issue in F31 with kde (plasma) but no reference to issues with
Gnome. I was able to run Gnome-tweaks, see that it was flagging that it
couldn't start dash-to-dock, the dash-to-dock settings were saying that
it was V66, so I used gnome tweaks to uninstall it. I then used
dnfdragora to install V67 of dash-to-dock when confirmed the V67 was
installed and V66 wasn't, but when I went back into gnome-tweeks it was
still saying that it was trying to start V66 of dash-to-dock. I
eventually found that I had to remove all the gnome-shell extension
settings in my home path, use dnf to uninstall dash-to-dock V67 and
reinstall it for Gnome-tweaks to show that it was successfully able to
start dash-to-dock V67. Also after doing this when I launched firefox it
immediately asked me asked me if I wanted to update all my extensions
from upstream except for dash-to-dock, which I did and that then
activated all the extensions even though at update they weren't active.
When I launch firefox V73.0a1 it displays with two windows
overlapping each other displaying the same contents, forms being
displayed on the screen are not displaying correctly in terms of when
input is entered into text boxes the input is actually being displayed
below the text boxes. Also the address bar keeps flashing on and off
because the display of the web page being accessed is intermittently
overlaying the address bar, consequently I can't actually select any
menus displayed on the web page. Just for interest Thunderbird V73.0a1
doesn't seem to exhibit these issues. If I run the version of firefox
from the repositories it exhibits the same overlay issues as well.
When I run Gnome-terminal it exhibits the dual window overlay issue
when maximised. If I run Gnome-terminal unmaximised it doesn't exhibit
the issue, but if I manually expand the size of the gnome-terminal
window it exhibits the overlay issue as soon as I type anything into the
window.
I tried reinstalling Gnome by re-installing the 'Gnome Desktop
Environment' group from dnf but that did not make any difference.
Does anyone have any ideas what the issue might be?
If I run dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=30 will that
downgrade me to a fully working version of F30 as it was before I did
the F31 upgrade?
regards,
Steve

Old Wine RPMs
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Now that Wine Staging has be gobbled up by Wine and Wine
bugs are no longer being fixed unless you put Code Weavers
on your payroll, I have had to downgrade my copy of Wine,
due to regression errors Wine has reintroduced since we lost Wine Staging.
What is the best way to figure out what all RPM's are used
on my old version of Wine, so I can download them for when
my version gets aged out of the repos?
Many thanks,

Slowdown for outgoing traffic on Realtek Ethernet interface

I'm running Fedora 30 on a somewhat older PC:

iperf Done.
The incoming throughput confirms that the Ethernet port is capable of
940 Mbits/sec.
My PC and 'backup' are connected to the same managed 1GigE switch
(Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch 8). To rule out a switch configuration issue, I ran
the same iperf3 test while the devices were connected to an unmanaged
switch and got the same results.
The host named 'backup' tests at 940 Mbits/sec in both directions when
tested against another Fedora 30 Linux PC of similar vintage so I don't
think 'backup' (a Linux-based Synology NAS) is the issue.
'ethtool' shows that my PC's Ethernet auto-negotiates 1Gig mode:

I did recently configure a smart queue policy on my LAN's Ubiquiti
EdgeRouter 4's WAN interface but I doubt this contributing to the issue
for three reasons: (1) the smart queue policy is bound to the router's
WAN interface which is a different interface than the one that trunks to
my PC's switch; (2) my benchmark test is between two devices on the same
switch plus the switch's dashboard GUI makes it obvious that the traffic
during the test doesn't go out via the trunk uplink to the router and
(3) removing the router's smart queue policy then running the PC -> NAS
iperf3 benchmark produces the same throughput numbers. Also, I recently
configured the PC to go into suspend after 90 minutes and to set up a
magic packet wake-on-lan before it suspends. I've tried backing off
these changes followed by a cold reboot...no change in the iperf3 results.
If this is a Linux kernel issue, it would have to have been introduced
several kernel releases ago because if I boot into the PC's oldest
kernel, 5.4.10-100.fc30.x86_64, I still suffer from the slower outgoing
throughput. So, either this issue began with a Linux kernel < 5.4.10 or
it's due to a configuration change I made but lost track of.
Have I run into a known, or unreported, issue with the newer Linux
kernels or the r8169 module in particular? If not, what might I look
into next to try to pinpoint what's causing the reduction in outgoing
throughput? Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Dave

evolution decoding errors
by Tim
Hi,
Has anybody else noticed Evolution badly decode messages?
I have several different Linux installations using different versions
of Evolution, and from time to time full-stops disappear on any of
them. If I look at the raw code, they *are* in the mail, but they're
not being rendered, and I can't see any cause for it. When they do
fail to render, that message always fails (it's consistent).
e.g. I received a quote for $17000, which was really $170.00. And some
weblinks fail, or images don't load, in HTML mail because a dot has
gone AWOL within a link (www.example.com has become wwwexample.com).

Failed Delta RPMs observed in repo
by John Mellor
Question for the repo managers,
Why do I sometimes see invalid checksums for drpm downloads? E.g: This
excerpt from the update this morning:
/var/cache/dnf/updates-7fc4c739b3909d9f/packages/selinux-policy-targeted-3.14.4-46.fc31_3.14.4-47.fc31.noarch.drpm:
md5 mismatch of resultSome packages were not downloaded.
Retrying.selinux-policy-targeted-3.14.4-47.fc31.noarch.r 14 MB/s |
13 MB 00:00
It almost always causes the total download size to be larger than any
savings from using the drpm format:
Failed Delta RPMs increased 41.3 MB of updates to 43.3 MB (-4.1% wasted)
Is this a repo bug?

exim-clamav
by Jeffrey Ross
The upgrade for Clamav that just came out seems to have broken
exim-clamav, more precisely removed exim-clamav.
If I attempt to upgrade clamav and clamd I am told that there are
conflicts:
Problem 1: package exim-clamav-4.92.3-1.fc31.x86_64 requires
clamav-server, but none of the providers can be installed
- cannot install both clamd-0.101.5-7.fc31.x86_64 and

Problem 2: problem with installed package

- package exim-clamav-4.92.3-1.fc31.x86_64 requires clamav-server, but
