non-rpm R libraries not accessible now w R v 4.0.x
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
I've installed some R libraries that are not available as rpm packages,
specifically matlib and a few others.
Recently, R was ported to version 4.0.x and these libraries are not
callable. When I remove them and try to install them all sorts of
dependencies are either removed or become problematic.
Any advice?
Much thanks,
Max Pyziur

Samba problems -
by Bob Goodwin
ed.greshko(a)greshko.com wrote:
Just remember 2 things....
1. Check the journal for more info on errors.
2. Use "smbclient -L remote_address" to find the available Sharenames.
In your case, /home/share was not on the list. It was "bobg".
And I still dunno why, what I did to make it different.
J have since dnf removed samba with the same Fedora32 lvm system, and
reinstalled samba again, this time following the configuration
instructions provided in the Fedora Documentation, old but it still
seems to work, instead of what I found googling which claimed to be
specific to Fedora-32. With that and what I have from the "Samba config"
thread it mostly works, bobg still prevails instead of /home/share -
[bobg@WS1 ~]$ smbclient -L 192.168.50.149
Enter SAMBA\bobg's password:
Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------
print$ Disk Printer Drivers
sharename Disk Insert a comment here
IPC$ IPC IPC Service (Samba 4.12.5)
bobg Disk Home Directories
SMB1 disabled -- no workgroup available
I still have a problem with the Gigabyte mother board but am waiting for
a replacement that will use the old ddr3 memory.
However my question now is why when I look at the Thunar file manager ,
Network browse 'SMB' is displayed but nothing more, no list of files
available, if I double click on the SMB I get "Failed to open SMB The
specified location is not supported"
Thunar also shows the permissions as root, but even that is grayed.
Running Thunar as root produces an error also, operation not supported.
I am not certain but suspect the iPhones, iPad users need that working,
I have not tested that ...
Any ideas or thoughts appreciated, *Bob*

OT: Bluetooth receiver/transmitter
by Paul Smith
Dear All,
I would like to buy a cheap Bluetooth receiver/transmitter for my
desktop computer running Fedora 32. I have searched eBay for that, but
meanwhile learned that most of them do not work on Linux. So, could
you please advise me on that?
Thanks in advance,

The new install (webster) is able to ssh out. It's ssh to webster

ping and traceroute find webster. ssh to non-root account has the same
problem.
ssh-copy-id root@webster also fails. ssh-copy-id on webster works.
Suggestions would be appreciated.

yes, I did and it worked.
Anyway, the problem was in the kernel. I've just updated the kernel to the one
in distribution yesterday and the Ipevo works as expected.
Thank you all for the help.

repeatable usb crash
by fedora@eyal.emu.id.au
I have a situation that I have not seen before.
1 - I plug a card reader into a USB3 port of a server
2 - I insert an SD card into the reader. It is /dev/sdk.
within a few seconds the full set of USB interfaces disconnect and the machine
locks up soon after.
3 - I log in through a serial console
4 - I attempt to shut down mythtv
at this point the machine totally crashes. No magic sysrq response.
Pressing the reset button caused a boot into grub, looping with errors.
A full power off/on brought the system up properly. (*1)
I did it again, to check that the crash is related to the SD card, with same result.
- The card reader is regularly used and never had any problem.
- The same card reader and SD card then worked just fine on another machine.
The SD card is the only new item here, acquired recently and maybe used for the first time.
I find it unusual that an SD card can lead to the whole USB system aborting.
The death of MythTV is probably due to the unexpected disappearance of the USB tuners, but it could
probably do better than just crash with "NULL pointer dereference".
This machine runs latest f30 (I know, I am just about to upgrade to f32).
$ uname -a
Linux e7.eyal.emu.id.au 5.6.13-100.fc30.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri May 15 00:36:06 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
(*1) the fact that a reset did not lead to a good restart makes me suspect that the problem is
related to the hardware (the mobo? the fw?).

document camera
by Walter Cazzola
Dear Fedora Experts,
I've just bought an Ipevo VZ-X document camera and I've some hard times to
have it running with my Linux Box (a dell precision m6800 running Fedora 31).
This camera can be connected to the the laptop both via usb and wifi.
I've tried both without much luck.
When connected via usb the system (most of the times) correctly recognize it:
> lsusb
Bus 003 Device 113: ID 1778:d120 IPEVO Inc. IPEVO VZ-X
But it doesn't show up in any tool I tried (Zoom, Teams, Skype, Kamoso,
OBS, Cheese, guvcview, etc.) nor in the system settings.
I wrote "most of the times" because it needs several turn on/off to be
recognized.
When it is recognized dmesg says:
[25080.302042] Code: Bad RIP value.
[25082.706544] usb 3-2: 9:2: cannot get min/max values for control 2 (id 9)

In the remaining cases, I get from dmesg:
[32124.861677] Code: Bad RIP value.
[32127.116392] usb 3-1: new full-speed USB device number 122 using xhci_hcd
[32127.230305] usb 3-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
When connected via wifi, I can access it through its web configurator and I
can test its functionality but only on the browser (chrome) still it doesn't
show up in any other application.
Ipevo provides a version of its visualization software for linux (ubuntu)
https://ipevo-api-cms.s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/software/visualizer/down...
I've tried to convert it with alien but it fails
> alien -r visualizer_1.0.5.33_all.deb
...
RPM build errors:
Arch dependent binaries in noarch package
But I'm pretty sure this will not help with the general problem.
Any idea/suggestion on how to have this working?
Thank you in advance for your help
Walter

fedora 3d printing?
by Tom Horsley
What do folks use these days for 3d printing from fedora?
I can download RepetierHost and it seems to function (at least
it brings up a GUI screen, haven't tried a print yet).
Any better options out there?
(I notice the initial burst of enthusiasm seems to have died
down with no recent updates to any fedora 3d printing pages
I could find).

Cantarell font prints blank (OT)
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I have an HP M402dn printer which has started printing the Cantarell
font as blanks; a page using the Cantarell font prints as a perfectly
blank page. The printer has no problem with (eg) the Liberation Sans
font. I believe the problem started recently, possibly with my upgrade
from Fedora-31 to Fedora-32 on about May 17. Questions:
* How can I find out what fonts my printer supports?
* How can I install fonts into the printer?
Thanks in advance - jon

rsync question
by bruce
assume
/home/test/user1/foo
/var/www/html
a user is in the "/" dir
how can this user copy/rsync "foo" dir to get /var/www/html/foo
i know you could cd to /home/test/user1 and
do
rsync -vv -aR foo/ /var/www/html/
which would get
/var/www/html/foo
but doing an rsync to a specific target dir.. not sure about how to do this!
