slow startup process and dmesg times
by Anil F Duggirala
hello,
I am looking at output from dmesg on my laptop and there appears to be a
time when a process takes longer than what might be expected and I think
this may be reducing my startup speed.
My question is, is it normal for there to be a jump in time (timestamp)
from 7 seconds to 18 seconds. And then from 21 seconds to 30 seconds?
Are these processes slowing down my startup?

thank you.

Extreme startup delay on F34
by John Mellor
What's wrong here? This is a fully up-to-date and stock F34 machine
with a good i5 processor, lots of RAM and a fast SSD, with a very long
and inexplicable time delay during boot. It appears to be idle for 2
minutes during every startup, with no known cause. This machine used to
boot in 8 seconds, but now takes over 2 minutes every time.
dmesg extract follows:

nsswitch.conf again
by Eyal Lebedinsky
This was brought up before, but today again it bit me. There was a glibc update (fc34)
which provides a new nsswitch.conf with this line
hosts: files myhostname resolve [!UNAVAIL=return] dns
which caused all the aliases I had for my server to fail because my local dns was not looked up.
Had to again remove the '[!UNAVAIL=return]' stanza.
Is this issue being fixed? I found this
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1717384
which suggests nsswitch.conf will become a fedora file (not glibc) and hopefully better, but this log
has now been open for a long time.

scanner no longer detected?
by Tom Horsley
I was surprised recently when I tried xsane and discovered that
it actually worked these days on my Epson Artisan 725 connected
via the network.
But I tried to use it again today, and found that xsane claims
it can't find any scanners.
I cranked up the Windows virtual machine and it talked to
it just fine.
Was fedora just teasing me the other day?
Any way to build in the known scanner IP addr instead of
relying on it scanning for devices?
I tried adding the IP addr to /etc/sane.d/net.conf, but nothing
changed.

Change root partition filesystem without reinstall
by Sreyan Chakravarty
Hi,
I am trying to change my root partition from BTRFS to EXT4, but I am
looking for ways to do it without a full reinstall of the OS.
Any suggestions?
Has anyone had any luck with tools like fsarchiver ?

by jarmo
Now working. Just changed screen resolution from 1280x720 16:9
which was good for my old eyes :) to 1920x1080. Only bad thing
is, that texts are so small, have to tri increas font size...
But, booting and running, so SOLVED...
Thanks for listening this noise...

Maybe offline updates aren't a bad idea
by Ed Greshko
In a first for me, my system froze solid doing an update today. It was a combination plasma updates and
kernel updates.
Anyway, it took a bit of reinstalling and cleaning up to get a working system. Not too bad for me.
This probably would not have happened if the updates were done offline. Pretty sure it was doing a plasma component
update when it froze. Going to have to rethink my procedures.

What I have last working kernel in that laptop, is
5.12.15-300.fc34.x86_64
I'm not any programmer nor bugzilla familiar.
I have sent to Chris Murphy both kernel boots, working and not
working ones. Hopefully I sent them right address...

New fc33/FF 90.0/amazon.com issue
by Dave Ulrick
Starting the morning of 7/23/2021 around 8 AM Central US time, I started
to experience issues with many Web pages at amazon.com. Instead of the
desired page, a picture of a dog would appear with a message "Something
went wrong at our end" or "Sorry we couldn't find that page." The issue
appears most frequently when I click on the Cart icon or the Account and
Lists link. I can recreate this problem with two PCs running fc33 with
all available updates and Firefox 90.0. Prior to the onset of the issue,
amazon.com worked perfectly with these two PCs. The issue does not occur
when I visit amazon.com with fc33 and Chrome 92.0 (on one of the two PCs
that exhibit the issue with FF 90.0) or with Win10 and Firefox 90.0.2.
Anyone else seeing this issue?
