laptop failing with latest kernel update
by Anil Felipe Duggirala
hello,
I performed a normal update today after some time without updating, which I believed contained a kernel update (to 5.16.5-100.fc34.x86_64 I believe). After doing the update and rebooting my pc started behaving erratically. Bootup time was longer, then it sort of got stuck, then some problems were reported by the reporting app in Gnome. My computer was simply malfunctioning all over the place, sometimes freezing completely. Decided to boot to the previous kernel (5.15.16-100.fc34.x86_64) and my pc is back to normal.
The Reporting app does not let me send a report saying
"The backtrace does not contain enough meaningful function frames to be reported. It is annoying but it does not necessarily indicate a problem with your computer. ABRT will not allow you to create a report in a bug tracking system but you can contact kernel maintainers via e-mail."
How should I report this issue in this case?
How can I change the grub boot default for now to boot to the older kernel by default? or should I try reverting (removing updated kernel) to the older kernel altogether for now?
thank you,
Anil F

NFS client names not mapping
by Robert Nichols
In a Fedora 35 VM, all users and groups in an NFS mounted filesystem are mapped to "nobody" even though the names and numeric IDs are the same on the server and client. The messages logged are of the form:
"name 'xxxx@local' does not map into domain 'localdomain'"
I have no nfs-idmapd service running. This same setup is running fine on a CentOS 8 VM. I didn't have to do anything special to make this work in CentOS 8. What am I missing here in a Fedora 35 installed with default configuration in a QEMU/KVM virtual machine?
Where does Fedora get its domain name? When I type "hostname --fqdn" I get "hostname: Name or service not known". The CentOS 8 VM apparently gets its domain name from the /etc/hostname file, which contains "cent9-vm.local". This does not appear to work in Fedora 35.

Does anybody still use `starship'?
by Igor Raits
Hello,
I saw some recent discussions (yet another time) how packaging Rust /
Go / Node.js is horrible, we should simply bundle everything and such.
Let's not discuss this here, though.
I'm interested to hear if there are any users of the `starship'
application here in Fedora that consume it from the repositories.
Please speak up if you do!
As pointed out in the other places, I don't think we are able to
update things like that as fast as releases popping out with just as
few people working on the packaging Rust stack these days (I'm pretty
much not contributing for last couple years due to the other work).
And the question, if we want to keep packaging it (with some slower
update cycle, as the time permits) or we want to retire it completely.
Personally, I'd love to have more people working on packaging (and
most importantly keeping up-to-date) Rust crates / apps but I think
this is not so realistic :)

LibreOffice Calc chart printout missing axes and gridlines.
by home user
Good morning,
I'm not sure if the problem is in LibreOffice or something else. Also,
I did try to post this in LibreOffice support, but my login does not
work, and trying to create a new account does not work.
(Fedora-34, Gnome, LibreOffice 7.1.8.1, HP LaserJet Pro MFP M180nw)
I have a LibreOffice Calc spreadsheet. It has a chart. On my
workstation monitor, the chart looks as I desire: border, x and y axes,
legend, axis labels, data curves, tick marks along the axes, and a grid
in the plot area. When I print the chart to a PDF file and then display
the PDF file, it look the same as in LibreOffice Calc. But, when in
LibreOffice Calc, I print to the printer, there are no axes and no grid
lines. How do I get the axes and grid lines to show?
Thank-you in advance.
Bill.

Interactive task scheduling (system) ? How do I run a list of tasks
consecutively on a server ?
by linux guy
Hi people.
I'm using a server to run a bunch of simulations. By bunch I mean
hundreds. Each simulation takes from 10 minutes to 10 hours to run. All
of the simulations are run from the command line. Every day I generate
more simulation cases.
I'm looking for a method/system/app that I can give a list of tasks that
will run them on the server, automatically, one after another.
How could I do this ?
Thanks

Mathematical packages: looking for maintainers
by Jerry James
Hello all,
I first mentioned a couple of months ago that I would like to retire
from maintaining mathematical packages in Fedora, so that I can focus
on code analysis and formal methods packages. Thank you to those who
responded and took some of those packages from me. I still have quite
a pile left. If you are a sagemath or Macaulay2 user, in particular,
please consider giving some of these packages a new home.
The packages are in good shape, mostly. I still have a couple left
that failed the mass rebuild, but only a couple. Almost all are on
their latest versions and need no immediate work.

Subject: Re: Picking a new laptop
I recommend Lenovo. I have been using Thinkpads for about 20 years.
Presently using an X61 and a T60, both of which are over 10 years old
and quite usable. The X61 just needs a new battery and runs F32 just
fine on an extension cord. Looking for a battery.
I have just installed F35 on the T60. Only problem area is audio, but I
have NO idea about pipewire. Yet. (A problem left for the student, so to
speak.) BTW, the T60 has all of the features of new machines, including
roughly comparable speed, but is only a T2600 dual core. First world
problems..
BTW, this T60 w 1450x1050 resolution screen, and 4G ram cost me the
princely sum of $50 Canadian. I may pay more than that to upgrade the ram!
Both with larger SSDs.
If you are looking for something newer, the T4x0S line of models are the
lighter models, running around 3 lbs or 1.4kg while still providing
great screens. These models are available used for very decent prices.
Personally I cannot stand touchpads. I am too used to the trackpoint.

pixel buds: either mono or no microphone, take your pick
by Neal Becker
I'm trying to use my pixel bud headphones with my laptop (lenovo X1 carbon
gen 4). I'm using kde and blueman-applet.
Basically I can choose 2 profiles:
High Fidelity Playback (A2DP sink)
or
Headset Head Unit (HSP/HFP)
There are also variations on these with different codec choices, but that
doesn't matter.
If I choose High Fidelity Playback, I get stereo output, but no pixel bud
mic input.
If I choose Headset Head Unit, I get pixel bud mic input, but output is
mono.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Neal
