LibreOffice Base?
by Robert Moskowitz
I want to create an Access Database on my F35 system so my wife can also
use it on her Windows system using Access.
So I did a quick bit of googling and found that maybe LibreOffice Base
is what I want.
So I did:
dnf install libreoffice-base
which worked, and then tried launching it and
nothing...
Any hints on getting this running?
thanks

Who moved my akmods? :-)
by Tom Horsley
Just FYI:
For those who are used to doing a tail -f on /var/cache/akmods/akmods.log
to figure out when drivers have finished building after a kernel update,
it ain't there no more.
I found it over in /var/log/akmods/akmods.log (which I have to admit
makes more sense as a location for a log file).

Gigabyte: "we cannot offer full support on Linux"
by Sam Varshavchik
It's been a long time since I've encountered this kind of obtuseness. This
is not new, but I thought that this kind of blindness was in the rear-view
mirror. I guess not.
One of their motherboards keeps locking up on me. After some back and forth
their last reply ended the discussion thread with a:
# Since we do not fully support and validate Linux, we cannot offer full
# support on Linux. Please try a Windows base OS to check if you are still
# experiencing the same instability issue.
Just thought I'd mention it here, so that other DIYers might take this into
consideration. Looking at their support page, it's listing new BIOS updates
every month.

How does one request a new RPM package group?
by Scott Beamer
Greetings,
I'd like to see an RPM package group added that would include all the
KDE-specific games. Something like the way the Debian/Ubuntu "kdegames"
packages depends on all the official KDE games.
They're not included with either of the current KDE package groups and
it's a pain to add them install them individually.
How would one go about requesting the addition of a package group to
Fedora? Is this done through Bugzilla, or is there anther way of going
about this?
TIA.

nvidia driver disabled ion F36 upgrade?
by Barry Scott
I have been using the nvidia driver from rpmfusion on f35 without problem.
Just upgraded to F36 and its using nouveau.
There is a nvidia-fallback service that ran and did the modprobe nouveau.
(Nice that this is here as a fallback)
Anyone know why the rpmfusion driver is not automatically loaded after
the upgrade?

fractional scaling in Fedora 36
by Anil Felipe Duggirala
Hello everyone,
I have installed Fedora 36 on a high-dpi laptop (Del XPS 9550) and Gnome; Im having trouble setting the scaling to 250% (200 is too small and 300 is too big).
I tried "enabling" fractional scaling by doing: gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['scale-monitor-framebuffer']"
This in fact allowed me to set the scaling to 250%, but then, when trying to open ANY program, the window would appear and disappear instantly. I wasn't even able to set the setting back to normal. I just reinstalled the whole system to get Gnome working again on Wayland (Xorg was working still).
My questions:
1. Is there another way to enable fractional scaling? (Gnome and Wayland)
2. In terms of performance, setting the display resolution to a smaller value (than my monitor default) is the same as using scaling?
3. Does fractional scaling work better in Xorg? how do you enable this in that case?
4. Does fractional scaling on Wayland affect performance compared to integer scaling?
5. Any other suggestions ?

OT : systemd-udev issue in CentOS 8.5 / Rocky Linux 8.5 / RHEL 8.5
by Peter Skensved
Sorry for being a bit off topic here but I'm hoping some of the clever people on this
list can help me out with a systemd-udev issue here.I'm hoping this is a solved issue in
fedora that maybe hasn't made its way upstream yet.
I have a custom usb devive that I want a certain group of users to have full access to when
it is plugged in . For CentOS 6 & 7 I just add a rule to /etc/udev/rules.d like
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="03eb", ATTR{idProduct}=="2017", GROUP="atmel", MODE="666"
and Bob is your uncle. The created usb device ( /dev/bus/usb/.../... gets permissions 666 as
user root and group atmel .
However, I cannot get this to work the same way with CentOS 8 / Rocky Linux 8 / ( RHEL 8 )
and I cannot figure out why not. The device in /dev/bus/usb is being created but only root
can access it as the ownersip is set to root:root and the mode to 664 . The logs report an :
unhandled action 'bind' on /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/usb1/1-1 ( or similar depending
on the port used ) and systemd-udev retuns : invalid SUBSYSTEM operation which doesn't
tell me a lot.
Removing the MODE and GROUP from the rule makes the error messages go away but ownership and
permissions are set to the default root and 664
Trying to replace MODE and GROUP ith a RUN=+some_script also fails ( with or without
including the ACTION=="add" keyword. The script never starts as far as I can tell.
Anybody knows what is going on here ? Does systemd-udevd not have root permissions ?????
I can of course set the mode as user root or use sudo but really ?
systemd is version 239 which is probably outdated by fedora standards but it is what comes
with RHEL 8.5 clones.

Re: OT: problems with xsane

AFAIK there is no option to Xsane that effects the displayed scan.
OTOH, I've tried two DS-640 with the same result
Any pointers? Thanks.
You probably need to install the Brother drivers. There are two iirc,
and need to be installed in the correct order and support programs.
Available through the support tab on the Brother web-site. The config
program has a very comprehensive list of settings which you put into a
config file.
Use scanimage -L to find the usb parameters and something like
#export ads='brother4:bus2:dev1'
then scanimage --device-name=$ads
scanimage itself has a number of parameters.
A couple of years ago I was given a Brother ADS-1500 scanner to scan a
large number of documents. Installed the drivers, and ended up scanning
just over 2100 pages in one day. The ADS1500 is a small thing, powered
from a power wart and uses USB, but very fast. At one point I did nearly
200 pages in one continuous call, feeding new pages into the back of the
feed stack.
I used: # double sided
scanimage --device-name=$ads --resolution 300 --format=tif
--source='Automatic Document Feeder(left aligned,Duplex)' -x 215 -y 280
--batch=$2%d.tif --batch-start=$3 --batch-count=$4 --batch-increment=$5
which numbers the output images by 1, 2 or -2 if working from the back
of a book.
The x and y parameters are the page size and you can limit the scan
viewport to ignore parts of the physical page.
