BPF or netfilter?
by Alex
Hi,
I'm trying to understand the difference between BPF, eBPF and netfilter. I
understand that BPF is a packet filter, but it appears to not be strictly
for firewalls, in the way that netfilter/iptables is?
It appears that applications like firewall-cmd, ipfire, etc are using
netfilter, but I also see references to other firewalls using BPF.
Any help to understand these differences and relationships would be
appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex

altered behavior opening hyperlink after F37 upgrade
by Jon LaBadie
I use a mate/compiz desktop environment. Typically I have
6 workspaces available with 3 to dedicated tasks. WS#1 is
my primary terminal windows. WS#2 is firefox and WS#3 is
thunderbird and calendar.
Sometimes I will highlight a web URL and right click to
get an action menu. To open the link I select "open link
address".
Pre-F37 behavior: Firefox remains in WS#2, the link is opened
in a new tab in Firefox, and my working environment is switched
to WS#2 (the one with Firefox).
Post-F37 Upgrade behavior: the link is opened in a new tab in
Firefox and the firefox application is moved from WS#2 to my
current working environment (typically WS#1).
I can't figure out which if any setting in firefox, mate, or
compiz might be affecting this behavior. Ideas?
Jon

Why do I see Xwayland when the desktop is on X11?
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I run my desktop (KDE) by selecting Plasma(X11) at the login screen.
However I see this from inxi:
$ inxi -G
...
Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.20.14 with: Xwayland v: 22.1.7 driver: X:
^^^^^^^^
...
Why is this? I understood Xwayland to be a shim between Wayland and X11
clients, and a look at pgrep shows no instance of Wayland running.

New laptop. All of the power manager features relating to
suspend/hibernate are disabled. All of the systemd services relating to
suspend and hibernate are inactive.
Despite this, the system shuts down, but does not power off. When boot

Repeatable on the two latest kernels. selinux disabled. Fedora 37 up to
date.
Before I beat up on the vendor, any suggestions?

booting fedora project image
by Bill Cunningham
I have tried to boot from Fedora's g'ziped tarball on GCP. I find it
hard to understand how to do this. GCP's instructions seem vague Videos
I find on youtube also seem to be old and out of date. I know you upload
this to a bucket but how do you get it to a VM to install and boot? Is
anyone familiar with this process?

Switching a Stadia controller to Bluetooth
by Patrick O'Callaghan
The Google Stadia online gaming service is shutting down, and Google
have released an update to the game hardware controller to enable it to
be used as a Bluetooth device with other platforms. See:
https://stadia.google.com/controller/index_en_GB.html
Basically, you plug in the controller on a USB port, Chrome detects it,
and asks you to proceed. However, on trying to do this I get an error
message:
Couldn’t connect to your controller because it’s currently being
used by another tab or program.
Close any tabs or programs using the controller, then try again.
Of course I'm not aware of running anything else that could interfere with
this, but just in case I repeated the process on a clean account with no
extraneous processes and it made no difference.
How can I discover what is accessing the USB port? I can see the device
details from dmesg but that doesn't translate directly to a /dev file
so I can't use fuser on it.

unsettling settings: "Videos" launches instead of "VLC".
by home user
not a professional sys. admin.
f36; Linux 6.0.18; gnome 42.2
last patched ("dnf upgrade") Thursday, Jan. 12
Good morning,
When I put a commercial video DVD into my tower's disc player, gnome launches "Videos". But in the gnome "Settings" tool, it's set to launch "VLC media player" for videos. VLC is what I want. How do I get my workstation to do what I want when I put a video DVD into my tower's disc player?
Thank-you in advance.

Installed Fedora 37 on older Dell with Windows 10, but doen't show windows as boot option??
by Michael D. Setzer II
Freed up space on hard disk on Dell with Windows 10
and legacy boot. Then booted from Fedora 37 usb to
install. Everything went fine with the Fedora 37 install,
but no windows option on boot menu. Most of my other
machine are Fedora only, but notebook has old Windows
7 as original OS, and it shows in boot menu but not using
UEFI boot on it.
At present, if I tried to boot legacy, it came up with not
bootable with the boot flag on UEFI partition (sda3), set
boot flag to (sda2) windows partitions, and can not boot
and use F12 to select legacy boot, and it will load
windows 10, and regular boot goes to UEFI but only has
Fedora..
Not a big deal, but not sure why the osprobe isn't
making an option for the windows 10?
Just use it for some testing of windows stuff, but it isn't
supported to windows 11, since it has an I3 with 4th gen
cpu, and looks like 11 requies an I3 with 8th gen.
Wondering if there is a fix, or if this is the only way to
get it to boot the old windows 10?
Thanks.
