How do I do a group reinstall of Xfce?
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
I have both MATE and Xfce installed. If I boot
into MATE, such that Xfce is not running, or not
start a GUI at all, how do I do a group reinstall
of Xfce?
Many thanks,

Warning for KDE users with HiDPI displays
by Go Canes
I "dnf updated" today and it took my system to KDE Plasma 5.27.1, and
there is an issue with scaling on HiDPI displays. As near as I can
tell the issue isn't fixed until 5.27.4, but that is not yet available
in updates-testing. There are workarounds, but so far my experience
is they make the system usable, but not "right".

GNOME interface is too bulky
by Ranbir
Hello Everyone,
Is there a tweak in GNOME to shrink the GUI? It's huge! There's so much
wasted space. It's eating up a ton of my screen real estate and driving
me bananas.
I like GNOME otherwise, I've been using it for 15 years or something
silly like that and I don't want to move to a different desktop
environment. But, if that's the most reasonable solution, then that's
what I'll have to do.
Thanks,
Ranbir

mounting a drive on F37
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I am trying to modify my /etc/fstab to mount a drive (where I want to place a backup). From looking at the current setup created by anaconda, it looks like I have to setup using UUID or LABEL (however these seem to be blank, see below).
First, my setup.
I have one SSD that has / and all the partitions associated with it.
I have three additional drives, two of which are hardware (for historical reasons) RAIDed, and have /home in them, and a third new drive that is a "free agent" (sorry for not knowing the correct term, but I hope that I can convey the meaning).
I want this to be mounted at boot as /mnt/whatever (I have verified that this mount-point has been created and exists).
So, I look at my /dev/disk/by-disk-seq and see:
~$ ls
1@ 2@ 4@ 5@ 6@
~$ ll *
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 9 Mar 29 14:01 1 -> ../../sda
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 9 Mar 29 14:01 2 -> ../../sdb
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 9 Mar 29 14:01 4 -> ../../sdc
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 9 Mar 29 14:01 5 -> ../../sr0
OK, there is an a, b and c. The d is the first drive that has the /, the sr0 is the swap, and the a, b and c are the three drives.
It appears to me that the sda and sdc are the ones raided (they have the same UUID and also lsblk indicates so (I have made up the part numbers here, for security). I have to say that I expected sda and sdb to be the RAIDed drives, I thought that sdc would be the new one that has been put in. But perhaps I am wrong in my understanding.
Anyway,
$ lsblk -f
NAME FSTYPE FSVER LABEL UUID FSAVAIL FSUSE% MOUNTPOINTS
sda isw_raid_member 1.3.00
sda1 ext4 1.0 xxxxx
md126
md126p1 ext4 1.0 xxxxx 116.3G 8% /home
md127
sdb
sdc isw_raid_member 1.3.00
sdc1 ext4 1.0 xxxxx
md126
md126p1 ext4 1.0 xxxxx 116.3G 8% /home
md127
sdd
sdd1 vfat FAT32 E56F-E0D8
sdd2 ext4 1.0 yyyyy 595.9M 8% /boot
sdd3 vfat FAT32 1616-D18F 933.7M 2% /boot/efi
sdd4 ext4 1.0 uuuuu 43.2G 0% /tmp
sdd5 ext4 1.0 vvvvv 43.2G 0% /usr/local
sdd6 swap 1 wwwww [SWAP]
sdd7 ext4 1.0 zzzzz 76.3G 14% /
sr0
zram0 [SWAP]
But, my problem is that /dev/sdb does not appear to have a UUID number. Indeed, I get nothing back when I try:
$ sudo blkid /dev/sdb1
or even
$ sudo blkid /dev/sdb
So, how do I mount this drive onto my /etc/fstab? Sorry if things are not clear, but I am happy to clarify further and provide more information.
Many thanks for your help, and best wishes,
Ranjan

Fedora 38 Upgrade Test Day 2023-03-28
by Sumantro Mukherjee
Hey All,
As we come closer to Fedora 38 release dates, it's time to test upgrades.
Fedora 38 has a lot of changesets and it becomes essential that we
test the graphical upgrade methods as well as the command line.
As a part of this test day[0], we will test upgrading from a full
updated, F36 and F37 to the F38 for all architectures(x86_64,ARM,aarch
64) and variants(WS,cloud,server,silverblue,IoT).
The results can be submitted here[1]
As usual, we hang out on the #fedora-test-day, should you have questions.

commands available on bootable iso
by Geoffrey Leach
Is it possible to get a list of the commands available on a Fedora
iso without actually mounting the iso? What I'm looking for is the
commands available from the Anaconda menu, not the commands that are
installed to the disk.

Recently sound does not play as root
by Eyal Lebedinsky
Fedora 36 up-to-date.
$ uname -a
Linux e4.eyal.emu.id.au 6.1.15-100.fc36.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri Mar 3 17:22:46 UTC 2023 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I have a script running as root (using sudo) and in it I play a sound
paplay /audio/ogg/beginning.ogg
and it always worked.
Then a few days ago it stopped and I now get an error. Something changed.
$ sudo paplay /audio/ogg/beginning.ogg
Connection failure: Connection refused
pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused
$ sudo ogg123 -q /audio/ogg/beginning.ogg
ALSA lib pulse.c:242:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused
=== Could not load default driver and no driver specified in config file. Exiting.
Is there a simple way to allow playing sounds in this context?
TIA
