systemd-oomd insanely aggressive with non-DE logins
by Andre Robatino
I have 3 machines with clean F37 installs. One of the F37 machines has 4GB of RAM, and I maintain it as a backup and normally only log in via ssh and do dnf updates via command line. In the last few weeks this has become extremely difficult to do due to being automatically logged out, presumably by systemd-oomd. It happens even if I boot in multiuser, which ought to reduce memory use. From what little I've read and what experimentation I've done so far, it appears that being logged into a DE (maybe only GNOME or KDE?) protects against this, but non-DE logins (including ssh), and any commands running in them, are not protected. This goes against the expectation that non-DE access should be LESS likely to run out of memory, especially if there isn't even a DE running. How hard would it be for systemd-oomd to be configured to protect non-DE logins and anything running in them?
I've also read that configuring non-zram swap might be a cure. As I said, these are clean F37 installs, and if that's necessary for reasonable behavior when there's not enough RAM, the installer should be doing it automatically. In my case, I don't think that's the cause, since the free command suggests that I'm only using a fraction of both the memory and swap even when the automatic logging out is happening.

cursor theme?
by Tom Horsley
I see fedora has finally dropped bluecurve, but the default adwaita cursors
are still incredibly ugly. Is there a supported cursor theme I could
switch to more like bluecurve?
Is there a page anywhere previewing the themes that are available?

hp - windows media creation tool
by bruce
Hey.
Looking over hp's laptops. They come with windows 11. I was wondering
if the hp - windows mediacreationtool actually works to copy the
windows OS to a usb so I can restore if required.
Thought I'd ask the list if anyone has used this tool to copy/restore
windows after installing fedora.
The docs/sites imply it should work.
Thoughts/comments.
thanks!

bitmap font error on F38
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I am also having the following error with pdflatex upon upgrading to F38 from F37.
pathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 1+120/600 --dpi 720 eurm10
mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for eurm10.
mktexpk: perhaps eurm10 is missing from the map file.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.
(see the transcript file for additional information)
!pdfTeX error: pdflatex (file eurm10): Font eurm10 at 720 not found
==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!
How do I get around this issue?
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

F38 and NUT
by Greg Woods
Since upgrading to F37, I am having problems getting Nut to work properly.
The errors I get from the journal are:
Apr 26 17:01:42 seveneves.gregandeva.net nut-server[326151]: Can't connect
to UPS [seveneves-ups] (usbhid-ups-seveneves-ups): No such file or directory
Apr 26 17:01:42 seveneves.gregandeva.net upsd[326151]: Can't connect to UPS

Apr 26 17:24:00 seveneves.gregandeva.net nut-monitor[326253]: Poll UPS
[seveneves-ups@localhost] failed - Driver not connected
All I could find on the net suggested that "Driver not connected" means I'm
using the wrong driver, but this is the identical configuration (including
the driver) that worked in F36. It's also a nearly identical configuration
that is still working for an identical UPS unit monitored from a Raspberry
Pi running Raspbian.
Any Nut gurus here that could help me troubleshoot this, and has anyone
else seen Nut quit working on F37 using a configuration that worked with
F36?
Here's what I have in my config files:
nut.conf:MODE=netserver
ups.conf:[seveneves-ups]
ups.conf: driver = "usbhid-ups"
ups.conf: port = "auto"
ups.conf: vendorid = "0463"

How to restart sudo rpmconf -a
by Jeffrey Walton
Hi Everyone,
I dnf-system-upgraded my last machine from F37 to F38. I screwed up at
post-upgrade at 'sudo rpmconf -a'.
I saw a message in the terminal:
Broadcast message from gdm@callboot on tty1 (Thu 2023-04-27 01:09:53 EDT):
The system will suspend now!
And I pressed ENTER a bunch of times trying to keep the machine awake.
Unfortunately, it means I kept old versions of configuration files:
==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version (and delete .rpmsave)
D : show the differences between the versions
M : merge configuration files
Z : background this process to examine the situation
S : skip this file
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** aliases (Y/I/N/O/D/M/Z/S) [default=N] ?
<Me press ENTER multiple times to avoid suspend/sleep>
Google is failing me.
How do I restart rpmconf?
Thanks in advance.

Updating grub after dnf-system-upgrade
by Jeffrey Walton
Hi Everyone,
I just dnf-upgraded my last system from F37 to F38. One of the
post-upgrade task is "Update GRUB bootloader on BIOS systems"
(https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/dnf-system-upgrade/):
Systems with the BIOS firmware have the GRUB RPM packages updated.
However, the installed or embedded bootloader is never updated
automatically. It is a good idea to update it between Fedora release
versions.
I have a system that is is using BIOS, and it not using UEFI or
SecureBoot (though UEFI is available):
$ sudo dmidecode | grep -i -E 'BIOS|UEFI'
Getting SMBIOS data from sysfs.
SMBIOS 3.0.0 present.
BIOS Information
BIOS is upgradeable
BIOS shadowing is allowed
BIOS ROM is socketed
BIOS boot specification is supported
UEFI is supported
BIOS Revision: 1.0
$ mokutil --sb-state
SecureBoot disabled
Platform is in Setup Mode
When I run the command:
$ sudo mount | grep "/boot "
/dev/mmcblk0p2 on /boot type ext4 (rw,relatime)
Do I install grub2 on /dev/mmcblk0 or /dev/mmcblk0p2? I think it is
the former, but I want to make sure. That is, is this correct:
sudo grub2-install /dev/mmcblk0
(I have open questions about systems that claim both BIOS and UEFI,
but I have not been able to find answers. If I need to back up a bit,
then please say so).
Thanks in advance.

Why is updatedb running now?
by Tom Horsley
I copied /usr/lib/systemd/system/plocate-updatedb.timer to
/etc/systemd/system/plocate-updatedb.timer and changed
RandomizedDelaySec from 12h to 2h which is supposed to mean
it runs sometime between midnight and 2am.
It did work that way of fedora 37, yet with the same changes
in fedora 38 it is running at around 3:30 in the afternoon.
What magic am I missing?

Power Suspend Automatically On in F38?
by Tim Evans
Upgraded my firewall machine F37->F38 today, with no apparent errors or
issues...
EXCEPT that I found it on power suspend twice in the first hour after
finishing the upgrade. Checked power settings and found "Automatic
Suspend" ON and set to 15 minutes' idle time.
