Virtualbox vs VMware for Fedora?
by Sbob
All;
I am running Fedora39, I have run VMware workstation for years, and I
have on and off had issues since VMware does not officially support
Fedora, normally I run a patch after each kernel update and it mostly
just works.
I am also running the osx unlocker so I can run mac VM's
I recently tried virtualbox on a spare laptop, havent looked at
virtualbox in years, and I was impressed, a few questions for the community:
- can I run the osx unlocker with virtualbox?
- does virtualbox have the same issues where it needs a patch after
each kernel and sometimes
just breaks with a new kernel , even with the patch?
Thanks in advance

MAME anyone?
by Alex
Hi,
It's been some years since I played with MAME, but would like to try again.
I've got it installed and the few games from mamedev work, but how do I
install/run other ROMs?
I've found some that match my current version (0.262), but they still don't
work.
The procedure I'm following is to download the zip then copy to
/usr/share/mame/roms and run name like "mame defender" or "mame milliped".
It results in something like this:
$ mame milliped
136013-104.mn1 NOT FOUND (tried in milliped)
136013-103.l1 NOT FOUND (tried in milliped)
136013-102.jk1 NOT FOUND (tried in milliped)
136013-101.h1 NOT FOUND (tried in milliped)
136013-107.r5 NOT FOUND (tried in milliped)
136013-106.p5 NOT FOUND (tried in milliped)
136001-213.e7 NOT FOUND (tried in milliped)
Fatal error: Required files are missing, the machine cannot be run.
However, those are the exact files within the zip file I've downloaded. I'm
thinking it's some kind of version compatibility issue, but I 1) don't know
how to determine which version the ROM is for and 2) ROMs I've downloaded
that claim to be for 0.262 also don't work.
Ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex

stdio.h
by Bill Cunningham
I installed from scratch fedora 39. Now I looked in /usr/include and
the usual development headers aren't there. glibc-headers and
glibc-devel are both installed. No standard C headers are present. Does
anyone have any idea what is going on?

ipp-usb not necessary
by Tom Horsley
I previously noted that ipp-usb was constantly running using (not too
much) cpu time, but constantly cluttering up the running process list.
I finally decided to experiment and just did "dnf erase ipp-usb" which
only removed that one rpm, then I rebooted (just to make sure).
I no longer have anything using significant cpu when the system should
be idle, plus the USB printer (and the scanner) seem to still work fine.
In fact, the printer starts up immediately when I send it a page to
print instead of delaying for several seconds like it did when ipp-usb
was installed.
I fail to understand why ipp-usb exists.

OT: what is an NSC?
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Sorry for asking an off topic question here, but
I know you guys will know the answer off the
top of your heads.
What is an "NSC" used in this context?
1.3.3 NSCs are installed between all wireless
networks and the CDE, regardless of whether
the wireless network is a CDE
CDE is Card Holder Environment.
Many thanks,

Fedora 39: PackageKid and dnf cache
by Dario Lesca
Update are managed from PK and packages are stored in its cache [1].
If I want update from line command only some package with dnf, same
packages are download again in its cache [2]
To use the same packages already downloaded from PK, I must first
search for the file if it has already been downloaded, then use it by
specifying its path, otherwise dnf dumps it back into its cache.
Is it possible to merge the cache of PackageKit [1] and dnf cache [2]
into one?
At least the rpm file cache ?
Many thanks

[2] /var/cache/dnf/

How to disable DNS search received by DHCP
by Strahil Nikolov
Hi all,
I am looking for some help to adjust systemd-resolved to still use DHCP (ip, gateway and dns servers) but to avoid using the dns search provided over DHCP.
The reason behind is that OKD4's coredns (Fedora CoreOS) appends the search stanza (first entry) that is taken from the host and then sends it to the upstream server.Ex:/etc/resolv.conf contains:search my.domain my.other.domain
CoreDNS query becomes 'quay.io.my.domain' instead of 'quay.io'.
P.S.: I have an ugly workaround where I unlink and create /etc/resolve.conf but that can't be the only solution.
Best Regards,Strahil Nikolov

That snippet is from:
<https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/entra/standards/pci-requirement-1>
Scrolling up from the 1.3 section to 1.2 ... one will see that, in
this M$ context, NCS is "Network security controls (NSCs)"
[putting the quoted bit into a search engine turned this up as the
first result ... ]

procmail question
by Thomas Cameron
I'm reading articles saying procmail is dangerous and unmaintained
(https://anarc.at/blog/2022-03-02-procmail-considered-harmful/).
I get why a setuid root:mail binary is potentially dangerous, but
procmail has been in use for decades and I don't think I've ever heard
of it being used for an exploit except for waaaaay back in 2017 and 2014
(https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-list/vendor_id-225/Procmail.html).
Anyone got any recommendations? I've used procmail for decades. I'm
pretty familiar with it. I *can* migrate to sieve, but procmail Just
Works(TM), so I'm hesitant.
Is the risk overblown? We're using Postfix and procmail and it seems to
be really solid. I am not really looking forward to migrating to sieve,
so I'd rather just stick with what I know, you know?
What are your thoughts?
