Still on FC4???? On a Pentium 3 too I presume? Clear-QAM and OTA require an ATSC tuner, while an NTSC tuner is needed for analog cable. There are tuner units which will do both, although not all will do so simultaneously. Mythdora is a Fedora based, all in one install of mythtv. It will set up everything you need from one iso image. And Mythtv has definitely NOT required 'your DBA to set up a database' since well before Fedora 4. If your hardware is known to Fedora, then mythtv will not require any 'channel entered frequencies'. You merely select the proper tuning basis, such as US-Broadcast or US-cable when setting up the tuner(s). At the moment, the problematic area is setting up QAM on cable channels due to the cablecos using their own variable channel numbers for the channels (and generally, not including proper PSIP infor in the stream). That is, of course, where the cableco actually provides some clear QAM...which Rogers Cable in Canada, for example, has not done since June 2007. (Fedora-42; stand-alone workstation) This is a totally new Fedora install on a stand-alone workstation, done today. It is not a part of a LAN or WAN or any other home or office network. It is not dual-boot. I do need for Firefox, Thunderbird, and dnf to be able to interact with the "outside world" appropriately. I do occasionally need to be able to download or upload things. Beyond those (and maybe other appropriate things that don't at the moment come to mind), I do not want anyone or anything to be able to get into this workstation. For example, no "ssh", "scp", "rlogin". I gather from the Fedora docs that I should use firewalld or firewalld-config. I have both. But Fedora docs does not give me enough detail. I am not an IT professional. What specifically should I do to keep unwanted people and things out?

This error pops up whenever my system boots up. Clicking on [Details <<] produces a message box with the single entry "Details" in it. What's happening? Thanks - jon

ESC/P thermal receipt printers and Linux...

Running dmesg after plugging my POS-5890K labelled usb thermal receipt printer, it identifies itself as full-speed USB device number 9 using ehci-pci idVendor=0416, idProduct=5011 Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 Product: POS58 USB Printer Manufacturer: GD32 Microelectronics SerialNumber: Printer I found the hard way that these printers are not supported by CUPS by default ... one has to go the extra length to either send esc/p codes manually via your own app http://kg4zqz.blogspot.com/2016/08/escposf-thermal-printer-filter-and.html ...or compile a driver from source, just like 20 years ago for some printers... maybe 2018 will be the year of desktop linux *sarcasm* I've tried this driver and it didn't work... http://scruss.com/blog/2015/07/12/thermal-printer-driver-for-cups-linux-and… (the driver source was fetched by git from its current github repo, so it's not out of date, it's in fact newer than the above blog post) What gives more clues is the small piece of thermal paper that came with the printer with a printout of its self-test (surely from Windows). The driver mentioned above was compiled, and installed but didn’t work. A sample print gave gibberish. A second text-only printing (by clicking the CUPS “print self-test page” read “IF YOU CAN READ THIS YOU’RE USING THE WRONG DRIVER FOR YOUR PRINTER”. A crude bug-finding code it seems… Any ideas before I head over to the CUPS maling list and pull my hair? This happened to me today for the first time. I ran 'evince' to view a pdf file, started OK, then clicked the drop down and was logged out. Not just evince exiting. As if X was killed (I still run Xorg). No oops in the system log. See log below for X crash. F421notebook stopped recognizing USB drives

I have been moving files between systems via USB drives. It had been going along well, when my system stopped recognizing that I plugged a drive in. ls /dev is not showing anything other than my SSD drive of sda What may be wrong? How might I troubleshoot this without rebooting? thanks

recovering back-up.

(F-42; stand-alone workstation; Gnome) Just before trying to upgrade from F-40 to F-41, I did a back-up to a USB 3 stick. The upgrade failed. A local friend gave me a windows-10 box to use. Until I could get the Fedora workstation adequately restored, I needed to get a few things off the F-40 back-up onto the windows-10 box. Attempts to re-install Fedora from Fedora-42 Live Workstation appear to have completely destroyed the partitioning of the hard drive. When I inserted the back-up stick into the port, windows-10 told me to use defender to scan the stick. I did so. I asked for a scan only. I did not want defender to attempt any repair or other changes. Defender reported no problems. But now when I insert the back-up stick into a port on either tower, it's claimed the back-up stick is un-formatted and empty. Fedora's "disks" and windows-10 (file browser and defender) agree. I do not recall which file system the back-up stick was formatted with beforehand. How can I recover the back-up (without cost)? Note that I'm needing to recover the back-up as a whole, not just a file or 2 from a back-up.

updating grub

I just updated my fedora 41 to 42 using dnf. Now everything works find and boots but the old selection for fedora 41 is still on the bootloader options. How do I get this off? I tried something with grub2-mkconfig and that didn't work. I want the fedora 42 option (Adams) and a rescue option and my windows dual boot. Everything for fedora 41 I want to remove. What should I do?
