Still on FC4???? On a Pentium 3 too I presume? Clear-QAM and OTA require an ATSC tuner, while an NTSC tuner is needed for analog cable. There are tuner units which will do both, although not all will do so simultaneously. Mythdora is a Fedora based, all in one install of mythtv. It will set up everything you need from one iso image. And Mythtv has definitely NOT required 'your DBA to set up a database' since well before Fedora 4. If your hardware is known to Fedora, then mythtv will not require any 'channel entered frequencies'. You merely select the proper tuning basis, such as US-Broadcast or US-cable when setting up the tuner(s). At the moment, the problematic area is setting up QAM on cable channels due to the cablecos using their own variable channel numbers for the channels (and generally, not including proper PSIP infor in the stream). That is, of course, where the cableco actually provides some clear QAM...which Rogers Cable in Canada, for example, has not done since June 2007. (Fedora-42; stand-alone workstation) This is a totally new Fedora install on a stand-alone workstation, done today. It is not a part of a LAN or WAN or any other home or office network. It is not dual-boot. I do need for Firefox, Thunderbird, and dnf to be able to interact with the "outside world" appropriately. I do occasionally need to be able to download or upload things. Beyond those (and maybe other appropriate things that don't at the moment come to mind), I do not want anyone or anything to be able to get into this workstation. For example, no "ssh", "scp", "rlogin". I gather from the Fedora docs that I should use firewalld or firewalld-config. I have both. But Fedora docs does not give me enough detail. I am not an IT professional. What specifically should I do to keep unwanted people and things out?

This error pops up whenever my system boots up. Clicking on [Details <<] produces a message box with the single entry "Details" in it. What's happening? Thanks - jon

New kernel 6.15.10-200 seems to stop gkrellm from seeing the Ethernet interface.

DNF got the new kernel (6.15.10-200.fc42.x86_64) yesterday morning. I remembered this morning to reboot to it. I then noticed that gkrellm did not have the normally visible Ethernet krellm showing. I could get it to show by checking the box for "Force chart to be always shown even if interface is not routed". But it was not showing the network activity. All networking stuff seemed fine, checking with various command line stuff. And all the websites I checked via a browser were working fine. I have "fixed" things by rebooting into the previous kernel (6.15.9- 201.fc42.x86_64). I am thinking about rebooting to the newer kernel and trying other network tools, like Wireshark. Anybody else seeing anything like this? -- Doug H.

How can I effectively use my SSD and HDD using bcache/bcachefs/btrfs?

(I know that there has been a recent friction between the kernel dev and the bcachefs dev; IDK what the outcome has been, if any) I am planning to shift back to kinoite after a brief 2-3 months of struggling to use windows (excess RAM, battery drains fast, updates take their own sweet time, and more). It will take another 1-2 months before I actually do it; Hopefully with the new installer. I now have a 256 GB SSD as well as a 1 TB HDD. The HDD is too slow for me to run fedora directly on it (Haven't tried tuning though...) I plan to install the entire system giving the full storage space to bcachefs, cache backing metadata all features to speed it up. I use systemd-homed's per-user LUKS encryption support, so global encryption is not that necessary. (But preferred if bcachefs encryption won't slow the LUKS loopbacks on top of it) If bcachefs is not available, I'll have to do with bcache and btrfs. In case no bcachefs, - A part of SSD for the base OS (root, esp, boot, swap). - Another part for bcache cache. - A partition on the HDD backing the cache, with `/var` or just `/var/home`. OR just the same setup without bcache, /var or /var/home directly on HDD (the speed though...) (bcache-tools is an extra package I have to layer, the only package I layer on my immutable/atomic system; That's why I'd be happy to have it inculded in the base, or an included alternative) I don't use LVM or ZFS, and would like to avoid the complexity. Also dm-cache scripts I would like to avoid. I also don't prefer to use it windows-style as a plug-in separate file-tree than the standard $HOME/*. But I am open to it if it's the simplest possible idea. (Note: I will leave a minimal amount of space in either disk, for windows. I need it for a specific wine/bottles-incompatible software requiring 3D graphics.) Kindly suggest me with possible ideas and solutions... If bcachefs is available and sufficiently stable, else if I can use bcache+btrfs (ext4 if btrfs overkill... mostly not), or just speed up my HDD.

Intermittent total freeze of KDE

Hi, Recently I am having problems with total freezes of my KDE. I am running F42 KDE workstation. It started as F39 and was eventually upgraded several times to the recent F42. I am using NVIDIA GTX 1630 card with plain nouveau drivers. No additional video drivers were installed. When KDE freezes there is no access to any GUI (mouse, keyboard), but the system is still running and it is accessible via ssh. The only way out is to reboot via ssh using sudo systemctl reboot This phenomena generates the following entries in the journal: Jul 23 23:13:05 ryzen.frank-local.localdomain kernel: nouveau 0000:2b:00.0: gsp: mmu fault queued Jul 23 23:13:05 ryzen.frank-local.localdomain kernel: nouveau 0000:2b:00.0: gsp: rc engn:00000001 chid:120 type:31 scope:1 part:233 Jul 23 23:13:05 ryzen.frank-local.localdomain kernel: nouveau 0000:2b:00.0: fifo:000000:000f:0078:[Xwayland[3410]] errored - disabling channel plus additional consequent entries related to VMs losing their access to the video. There is nothing else in the journal. I am at loss as to what these messages mean exactly. I am not absolutely sure but it looks like the problem is triggered when multiple remote desktops are displayed locally using NoMachine package. However, the problem is intermittent to the point that is is unpredictable. Could please someone advise what could be the possible way to troubleshoot? Thanks Frank -- <listfrank1(a)gmail.com>

New computer recommendation?

Hi All, I have been recommending Lenovo's Think Station computer to customers. But I really do not like how proprietary they are. Repairing them is impossible after the warranty period expires as Lenovo is the only source of parts and Lenovo won't sell you parts. Anyone have a recommendation for a business grade computers that use generic parts and are very reliable? Many thanks, -T

Brother HL-L2360DW always out of paper

My printer, a Brother HL-L2360DW, always claims to be out of paper. I cannot print. This has been a recurring problem. Now it seems permanent. OT: Issue with wine-devel and winehq-devel seems resolved with 10.9

A failure with wine-devel and winehq-devel versions 10.9 thru 10.13 seems to have been resolved with release of 10.14 this morning. Seems machines with CPUs that were missing AVX flag would crash with "SEH:" errors. Making going back to 10.8 the only solution. Number of things were tried with 10.9 to 10.13, but still falures. The 10.14 has now resolved the issue for me. On older Acer Asprie notebook with dual core cpu that doesn't have AVX flag. So, if others have had problem, might want to look at 10.14. +------------------------------------------------------------+ Michael D.
