bash history
by Dave Close 06 Oct '26

06 Oct '26

Not really history as in "!<number>" to select a previous command. But perhaps related. On most of my Fedora systems, bash remembers the last commands entered prior to a restart. After the system restarts, a new bash window shows the last previous command when I press the up-arrow key and multiple presses continue to show previous commands in reverse order. On one system only, nothing happens when I press that key. On that one system after I've entered commands, up-arrow shows the previous commands in reverse order as I expect. Except that it doesn't go back beyond the first new command after the restart. This happens on each new bash window on that system, even after other windows have started to respond to the up-arrow key. I presume some history file is being deleted as a byproduct of the restart. But I can't seem to find whatever option controls that behavior, perhaps because I haven't used the right name to search for it. It clearly isn't the .bash_history file as that file is present after a restart (though it doesn't appear to have been updated for months). Please clue me in. -- Dave Close, Compata, Irvine CA +1 714 434 7359 dave(a)compata.com dhclose(a)alumni.caltech.edu "Any fool can make something complicated. Problems with OpenGL

I get many problems with OpenGL apps. Example from filelight-- :~# filelight QStandardPaths: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to '/tmp/runtime-root' QGLXContext: Failed to create dummy context qrc:/ui/OverviewPage.qml:11:1: QML OverviewPage: Created graphical object was not placed in the graphics scene . QObject::disconnect: wildcard call disconnects from destroyed signal of WindowThemer::unnamed QRhiGles2: Failed to create temporary context QRhiGles2: Failed to create context Failed to create RHI (backend 2) Failed to initialize graphics backend for OpenGL. KCrash: Application 'filelight' crashing... crashRecursionCounter = 2 [1]+ Aborted (core dumped) filelight Running f43 with LXDE. Plasma won't load with OpenGL errors. dnf lists kde-desktop-environment as installed. What can I rebuild to get OpenGL working?

Musescore update
by Jerry James 05 Oct '26

05 Oct '26

Greetings Fedora users! Does anyone have time today to test a musescore update for Fedora 45? https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2026-e5a087cb33 It is going to be 1 day short of reaching stable before Fedora 45 Final Freeze. It contains a CVE fix, for a bug in the bundled synthesizer. I'd be happier if that CVE were fixed in the F45 base install, rather than requiring a 0-day update. The bug is that arbitrary channel numbers could be specified, leading to overflow of some internal arrays for sufficiently large channel numbers. The fix is to ensure that all channel numbers lie in the allowed range. -- Jerry James http://www.jamezone.org/

nvidia-modeset/kthread_q 100% CPU + frozen computer (nvidia proprietary driver)
by Frédéric 03 Oct '26

03 Oct '26

Hi, Since I upgraded to fedora 44, I experience computer freeze under Plasma (wayland). Sometimes when in screen lock mode, I cannot log back again because the computer is not responding or it happens just after I unlock the screen. I can still log in via ssh and see that nvidia-modeset/kthread_q is using 100% of the CPU. PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 1073 root 20 0 0 0 0 R 98,8 0,0 17:17.71 [nvidia-modeset/kthread_q] The process cannot be killed with signal 9 or 15 and the the computer does not even turn off with shutdown command. The only thing I can do is to run the sysreq commands to reboot with Alt+Sysreq+REISUB. I use the proprietary nvidia drivers from rpmfusion (610.43.03). My laptop runs an AMD CPU (Ryzen AI 7 350 w/ Radeon 860M) with an NVIDIA GPU (GeForce RTX 5060). I recently upgraded the BIOS of my computer to the latest available but it did not improve. Last time it happened, dmesg|grep error gave: ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.ACDC.RTWT due to previous error (AE_NOT_EXIST) (20251212/psparse-529) ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.ACDC._GRT due to previous error (AE_NOT_EXIST) (20251212/psparse-529) ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.WMID.WQBZ due to previous error (AE_AML_BUFFER_LIMIT) (20251212/psparse-529) ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.WMID.WQBE due to previous error (AE_AML_BUFFER_LIMIT) (20251212/psparse-529) hp_bioscfg: Returned error 0x3, "Invalid command value/Feature not supported" It is possible that those are the latest logs in journalctl just before the freeze: kernel: nvidia 0000:05:00.0: Enabling HDA controller audit: BPF prog-id=114 op=LOAD systemd[1]: Starting fprintd.service - Fingerprint Authentication Daemon... systemd[1]: Started fprintd.service - Fingerprint Authentication Daemon. audit[1]: SERVICE_START pid=1 uid=0 auid=4294967295 ses=4294967295 subj=system_u:system_r:init_t:s0 msg='unit=fprintd comm="systemd" exe="/usr/lib/systemd/systemd" hostname=? addr=? terminal=? res=success' systemd[1]: Started dbus-:1.3-org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper@23.service. audit[1]: SERVICE_START pid=1 uid=0 auid=4294967295 ses=4294967295 subj=system_u:system_r:init_t:s0 msg='unit=dbus-:1.3-org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper@23 comm="systemd" exe="/usr/lib/systemd/systemd" hostname=? addr=? terminal=? res=success' audit[68171]: AUDIT1100 pid=68171 uid=1000 auid=1000 ses=3 subj=unconfined_u:unconfined_r:chkpwd_t:s0-s0:c0.c1023 msg='op=PAM:unix_chkpwd acct="fred" exe="/usr/bin/unix_chkpwd" hostname=? addr=? terminal=? res=success' systemd[1]: dbus-:1.3-org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper@23.service: Deactivated successfully. audit[1]: SERVICE_STOP pid=1 uid=0 auid=4294967295 ses=4294967295 subj=system_u:system_r:init_t:s0 msg='unit=dbus-:1.3-org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper@23 comm="systemd" exe="/usr/lib/systemd/systemd" hostname=? addr=? terminal=? res=success' systemd[2194]: app-org.kde.dolphin(a)5bc932b56eb94c20b1cf116060b04205.service: Consumed 10.477s CPU time over 4h 24min 14.502s wall clock time, 62.5M memory peak, 26.1M memory swap peak. kwin_wayland[2553]: Libinput: event6 - SYNA3501:00 06CB:CFC5 Touchpad: kernel bug: Touch jump detected and discarded.
