how to set up disk encryption with custom partitioning on Fedora install

Hello, I have been trying to set up a new F44 laptop with custom partitioning but am very lost with how to do disk encryption. From all that I read, I see that whole disk encryption is possible with a toggle if you allow the installer to decide on where to install what. No other option seems to have an encryption option. I came across this article: https://dev.to/anay_pandya_bfac6bcdbb055/encrypt-once-boot-forever-tpm2-aut… but it again assumes whole disk partition set up presumably as part of a vanilla default installation. recommended BIOS options for F44 installation on Dell Pro 14 Premium PA14250

Hi, I am getting ready to install Fedora 44 (no Windows needed), and I was wondering what BIOS options I should change. I would like to have the machine set up with the ability to hibernate (which I do at least a couple of times a day). In terms of security, I see that there are toggle buttons for TPM 2.0 Security, Key Storage Enabled, Absolute (R), UEFI Boot Path Security (Always Except Internal HDD), Firmware Device Tamper Detection (Silent), and Pluton Security Processor services enabled. Which of these options will create complications with the installation of Fedora? The Absolute Persistence can only be disabled in a one-way operation. Oh, there is a Legacy Manageability Interface Access option that is enabled but grayed out. Many thanks in advance for any suggestions, and best wishes, Ranjan

anaconda manual disk partitioning installation question

Hello, I have not previously used the "new" anaconda tool so am a little confused about how to do disk partitioning. Basically, I want a setup which allocates 25 GB to /, 32 GB to swap (my RAM is the same, and I need to have swap in order to hibernate), perhaps 2 GB to /usr/local/, 2 GB to /tmp and the rest of 512 GB to /home. (I would like /home to be encrypted.) And of course, /boot/efi/ and /boot/ (1 GB each, perhaps). So, I guess during installation, I should use "Manual disk configuration" but I do not understand how to go about creating these partitions (I prefer ext4), one of which is encrypted. It seems to me that there is only one disk, with partitionings already done for the recommended /boot/ and /boot/efi/ and the rest assigned to /, and it is not clear to me how to select the same device for separate mount points (I get an error). I was very familiar with the older anaconda and had grown to be quite comfortable with that in doing the partitioning. However, I can not quite figure out how to do this partitioning. "Authentication Required" dialog box

Hello Everyone, I'm running an updated Fedora 44 workstation with the GNOME desktop environment. If I use dnf to make any package changes (e.g. install), a dialog box opens up a few seconds after the install completes asking me to authenticate with a local user account that has sudo privileges. I enter my creds, hit enter and the box goes away. A second later it opens again asking me to type in my creds again. I also see it pop open when I haven't made any package changes. So, something happened on the system to trigger it. I'll be damned if I know what it was (I never care enough to poke around to check...I choose to stay annoyed...lol). This has been happening to me for a few releases now, even on systems where I've done fresh installs. Why does this infuriating dialog box pop up and how the hell do I stop it? I've seen mention online that it's a PackageKit bug. But, that doesn't seem plausible since it's happening release after release. -- Ranbir

nautilus slow start up with external drives

Since moving from F40 to F44, I've seen that there is now an approximately 4 second delay for nautilus to start up whenever there is an external USB drive plugged into my laptop. Any idea how to stop this?

Fedora Server is unable to connect to the internet via ADSL/VDSL!?

I tried to install Fedora 44 Server edition on a machine that was supposed to serve as a firewall/gateway for a home network on an ADSL/VDSL internet connection. And wow 1 - apparently adding an xDSL connection in the installer seems impossible (it only offers to add Bond/Bridge/Team/VLAN devices). Which wouldn't be a problem - but the problem is that after installing and starting the newly installed system, there are neither the ppp, NetworkManager-ppp, NetworkManager-adsl packages (nor NetworkManager-tui - I am no grandmaster in nmcli ;) - so an ADSL/VDSL connection cannot even be created! Which is quite a problem in the absence of another internet connection. I wanted to report it in Bugzilla - but I don't know which component to choose (it is a required field). Can anyone advise? PS: what is interesting is that when installing Fedora Mate, the packages needed for an xDSL connection are installed! -- Thanks Franta Hanzlík

Fedora 44 Desktop must be installed as Server (because of the poor disk management in the installer)?

I wanted to install Fedora 44 MATE on a disk where another system was previously installed, and where partitions for the new system (this Fedora 44) were prepared. And I imagined that I would just format these partitions (and mount other existing ones somewhere under /mnt/). Unfortunately, it seems that the Fedora MATE installer has an exceptionally bad solution for the system location on the disk and that the existing partitions cannot be used. So I finally installed Fedora 44 Server, where fortunately the previous proven method remained (standard and blivet), and then installed the things needed for the desktop. Everything works - but it's probably not the best way to install a desktop. Did I do something wrong? Is it possible to partition/allocate the disk for the desktop the old way or somehow reasonably? -- Thanks, Franta Hanzlik

sendmail complains about missing ca-bundle.crt

Or is it a misconfigured sendmail? I note that with the f44 upgrade I received a new sendmail.cf.rpmnew but no sendmail.mc, which I need to adjust. sendmail.mc contains these lines: define(`confCACERT_PATH', `/etc/pki/tls/certs')dnl define(`confCACERT', `/etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.crt')dnl define(`confSERVER_CERT', `/etc/pki/tls/certs/sendmail.pem')dnl define(`confSERVER_KEY', `/etc/pki/tls/private/sendmail.key')dnl The above confCACERT file does not exist. 'dnf provides' finds no source for this file. In which case what is the correct way to fix the configuration? Firefox checking? links on hover

I have a local HTML file with a list of links. When I open this page in Firefox I see many log messages like this: 2026-06-07T09:46:58+10:00 named[1225250]: timed out resolving 'www.google.com/HTTPS/IN': 8.8.8.8#53 These seem to show up for any link that I pass the mouse over, even briefly. Firefox is running in safe-mode (as a test) so no add-ons are involved. My private named config nominates 8.8.8.8 as the forwarder. I want to stop Firefox from doing this. Just do nothing when the mouse moves across my page. How do I stop Firefox making these requests? Not just stopping the timeout. -- Eyal at Home (fedora(a)eyal.emu.id.au)
