Sorry to respond to my own post.
In case anyone in interested, VLANs operate at Layer 2 of the OSI
stack. Routers, on the other hand, operate at Layer 3.
That is why, when 2 devices are on the same local network connected
with a switch or hub you'll see it as a direct "1 Hop" connection.
It would appear the same as if they were directory wired together in
what you may refer to as a crossover connection.
