I wonder if an uninstall / reinstall would fix this issue? Sounds to me like something went bad and just needs to be started over from scratch.....just my ramblings on the matter...
When I try from terminal, I get a core dump
$ vlc

Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
