Hi everybody!
I just got informed through personal mail by a list member that my GPG
signed mail to the list, and equal mails by others, are uncomfortable to
be read. Because of the signature the mail body comes as an attachment
(ATT?????.txt) in text format. I think this is very uncomfortable for
those readers, and being forced to open an attachment ...
The reader who informed me is using Outlook Express. I would now like to
know if there are other users and clients having difficulties with GPG
signed mails.

I had this problem a while back as well, I believe the answer I heard on
another mailing list was Outlook was broken to the RFC standard (as
usual). However, the solution is to "clear sign", or "inline sign"
your
message, so the little header and footer for GPG come in the actual
email message body. How exactly you set this up with your particular
email client, I don't know. I don't even think Evolution can do this,
but I think Moz can.

I'm using Mozilla ThunderBird, and not seeing any problems with your
signature. I noticed you don't always digitally sign your messages, though.

That is right. I once started to GPG sign list mails, then noticed that
I did not really can control the cases where mailman as the list manager
program destroyed the whole signed message and makes it unreadable.
Lately I recognized that a new mailman handles GPG signed messages
different: in Evolution I see a thin horizontal line between the
signature icon and the list footer. So I thought that issue was fixed
and I started again to sign my messages. Though, it was not fixed and I
had to resend messages unsigned because the first message was destroyed.
Some mail I send unsigned even the first time when I think it might be a
candidate for the mailman bug.

Yes! I have been having this issue with ALL your mails. It is quite
annoying to try to read these messages. I use Evolution, so I expect
this would be a very common problem for many Linux users.
In fact, my mail filters do not work on these messages either, so I have
to deal with them by hand, which adds to the annoyance.
Note that you are not the only one doing this on this list; there are
others as well.

Since Alexander is using:

It is not able to clear sign in the actual body of the message. This is
the "old" way apparently. There has been a lot of talk about this on
the Evo list. Google it for more info.
I think there is actually a gnome bounty to include clear signing, but
not 100% sure on that. Maybe in Evo 2.0.

KMail also seems able to do this. KMail has no problem with displaying
Alexander's Evolution-signed mail either.
Some people "have no choice" but to use MSFT stuff at work or whatever, so it
is no sin on them. But I wouldn't let their software's broken behaviours
control what or how you choose to do on the list.

I feel for him, i really do. Perhaps they should look into a mail client
such as Thunderbird. I think this would resolve to his his comfort level,
otherwise "oh well".

No problems here with Kmail and Mozilla. Kmail shows the signed part of
the message in a coloured box. Mozilla doesn't understand the signature
but shows it as an attachment, and shows the text of the message in the
message pane as usual.

thank your for that feedback. Until now I mainly thought for Microsoft
email readers to have a problem with GPG signed messages. Now you are
telling it is Evolution - at least with some kind of configuration -
too. The one who reported me his problems with my mails has no problems
reading them with Evolution, and I can read my posted mails as well
without any problem. I check all my postings.
I might be helpful if you can describe your configuration of Evolution
to find the problem. Do you have GPG installed on your mail reading
host?

I use Mozilla 1.4.1 which, if both it -and- the mailman server are
optioned properly, works just fine. I don't use either Evolution -OR-
any Microsoft mail reader for anything -- much less a Linux-oriented
mailing list -- but I'm gonna take this opportunity to make a statement:
It's a sick world in which one of the most prolific contributers to this
list gets challenged by anyone who uses a Microsoft product. It seems to
me that the readers of this list should be willing to learn Sanskrit or
Ancient Hebrew if either of those happens to be the language preference
of the guru-contributers and it would be interesting to know who had the
balls to bitch about GPG signatures.

I was not challenged by the person who privately mailed me, in no way.
Initially we had a private mailing about one subject here on the list.
In one of his mails the person just informed me, that reading the list
mail with Outlook Express he gets my mail's content just as an
attachment. That gave me the idea there might be numerous other readers
as well with this problem or even worse. It is that I do not post to
this list for my private fun. If I did misconfigure something on my side
with the effect that most of my mails are not or even hard to be read,
then this causes me to change the way I do.
That was the background which led to my question to this list. Thinking
it might be better to do not GPG signing.
I agree, that this worl is kind of sick, but not at first place because
of so much different mail formats or even companies feeling standard is
only what they produce (no, no names here :)

Hi Alexander!
No problems here with signatures (Evo 1.4.50). I quite like Evolution's
handling of digital sigs with the small lock icon which when clicked
will retrieve the key from a keyserver, import and check it. Non
intrusive and I see no reason for you to not sign your messages. :-)

The good posters quickly get famous.
You might elect to post one GPG signed message a month
so folks can snarf up your ID/Key. You could also prune
your .sig to one line (so could I).

Same thing happend to me. Someone from the list informed me that my sig
is shown inline and he gets an attachment, too. IIRC he used/uses
evolution, too.

I am not sure why I have this problem in Evolution and others do not. I
am using evolution-1.4.5-7 straight out of Fedora Core 1. No fancy
setup. I do have gpg installed. I have not used it yet myself though.
I read this list at work, so maybe this is happening due to the mail
server setup? I think the mail server is some Microsoft product.
Some think that anyone with this problem should just switch mail readers
or keep quiet. Up to now I did keep quiet, but you asked. Personally, I
would like to find out why this is happening to possibly fix it.
Maybe I will test Mozilla mail (which I find inferior to Evolution for
my purposes) to see if it is the client or some server setup. Until now
I assumed your client created the attachments.

I sign almost all my emails, and I get this question from time to
time.
Outlook Express is broken. It does not comply with the relevant RFC,
2015. 2015 specifies "MIME Security with Pretty Good Privacy (PGP)".
It was written by Michael Elkins, the original author of mutt (so it's
a reasonable bet that mutt is RFC compliant, at least in this regard
:-).
To the extend that RFCs are the "rules of the road" of the Internet,
it is incumbment on your correspondent to get an RFC compliant mail
reader. There are additional reasons to ditch LookOut!; see "Outlook
Not Good: Effective Practices for Avoiding Digital Infection", by
David Baker,

"That user is using obsolete and broken software. PGP/MIME is the

and not some proprietary ad-hoc crap. Tell that other user to get
rid of his legacy crap mail software and install standards compliant
software. RFC 2015 is from 1996, by the way, so no mail software
author can say he didn't have enough time to implement this."

Well it's easier to use a deprecated method that still works, then to
try and convert people to using a different email client (even if they
should).

That could explain all. My brother gave me the feedback once too. They
have Exchange as their central mail server at office. This crap of
server has a fair amount of bad behaviours and disregards standards. I
think he said he got my GPG signed mail as an attachment with the name
"SMIME.txt". Doesn't this say all? S/MIME is a total different signing
method than GPG/PGP and if the server can not distinguish those it is
clear what happens ...

Right, I asked and did request for controversy feedback. Of course it

Ok, then Evolution should not be the problem. I am running Evolution
from FC1 too, no enhancements, just GPG signing activated.

That could explain all. My brother gave me the feedback once too. They
have Exchange as their central mail server at office. This crap of
server has a fair amount of bad behaviours and disregards standards. I
think he said he got my GPG signed mail as an attachment with the name
"SMIME.txt". Doesn't this say all? S/MIME is a total different signing
method than GPG/PGP and if the server can not distinguish those it is
clear what happens ...

Right, I asked and did request for controversy feedback. Of course it
would be better if no one would have problems with GPG signing.

Mozilla allows automatic inline display of attachments, so these
messages are readable in Mozilla, but the attachments remain. If you
turn off automatic display, then it looks like Evolution. I cannot find
a similar option for Evolution, though.
Another problem is that Evolution does not thread messages with these
attachments properly (they do not go into threads at all -- but that is
an Evolution issue).
Are these attachments normal for PGP signed messages? From the list it
looks like this might be the case.
