Hello!
I have Fedora 17 x86_64 installed on my Samsung N145Plus netbook.
Sometimes when I close the lid the machine keep on running instead of
suspend. I need to open and close the lid again to suspend. Any idea
why? Any solution?
Is there any good tutorial on how to lower the power consumption of my
netbook? I mean sysctl, proc, etc. settings. I had Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64
and laptop-mode-tools on this machine but I had problems then I
changed my OS to Fedora 17. Most of those problems gone but instead
7-9 hours I only get 2-4 hours on battery.

I mam not sure what you mean by standby but gnome-tweak-tool (called
Advanced Setting)) on the application list controls what happens when
the lid is closed.
in my post above standby == suspend. sorry.
I don't know about the OP, but I'm running F17 with MATE. but I've
also looked in gnome desktop as well as xfce, and I can't find any
setting for that. certainly there are menus for when on AC power and
also for when on battery, but none that I've found offer suspendn as
an option. :(
ah, I see gnome tweak tool available in "add/remove software". If it
provides important functinality like configuring power management for
laptops, I'd sorta think it would be installed by default. I always
"just had it" in previous installs on this machine, so I wasn't expecting
to have to install something in addition.

There is a tool called powertop in the standard Fedora repos: run it
from a terminal as root. There is a tab (you get to it with the right
arrow) called tunables, which makes suggestions for saving power.
Don’t accept these suggestions blindly: it wants “Autosuspend for USB
device Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical®” on my desktop, which turns the
mouse off. I find this less than useful.
Powertop knows how to implement most of its suggestions itself, or you
can run powertop --html to output a file called PowerTOP.html, which
gives you the command lines to run. You should note that most of these
command lines will only affect the current session: you may want to
change /etc/sysctl.conf (for example) to make the results permanent.
However, you should also note that powertop suggests
echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/usb/devices/1-1.2/power/control'
to put the mouse into autosuspend mode. There’s no guarantee that the
mouse will remain at that address (because USB is like that: devices can
come and go, and that affects which device number they get), and you
could end up autosuspending something you didn’t mean to autosuspend,
like a disk.
It also loves to suggest increasing the VM writeback timeout. This means
that stuff you think you’ve written to disk may take longer to actually
get there. With a working battery, the main thing you have to worry
about there is kernel crashes (if you save something, then the kernel
crashes, you might not have your saved work on disk).
None of this is Fedora-specific, by the way.

FWIW I use xfce and have absolutely no problem suspending... but then
My mention of XFCE was to show it is probably not desktop dependent[1].
The key bit is, the problem for me happens when there is a saved
connection with a single quote in it's name (e.g. ROOSTER'S, name of a
pub I visited once). While saving the connection NM doesn't escape the
single quote in the DEVICE field. This unescaped single quote leads to
failure of the script: /usr/lib64/pm-utils/sleep.d/56dhclient, and
suspend fails.

possible bug in how NetworkManager saves connections, that later
makes the suspend process fail.
Do you see any errors in /var/log/pm-suspend.log? If so, could you post
them?
FWIW I use xfce and have absolutely no problem suspending... but then
I'm doing it on the command line. Perhaps the OP should try using
pm-suspend as root to see on which level the problem originates.

have problems. Closing lid is working as I need.

As was mentioned in another branch of the original posting, you may need
to install Gnome Tweak Tool which will then appear in the Gnome menus
under (I'm typing this from memory, so this may not be fully accurate)
advanced settings. it will let you make the necessary settings. Turns out
it was NOT installed during the original Fedora installation, but installing
it allowed me to solve the problem when logging into the Gnome 3 UI (but
not MATE, that took some other doings which I won't relate here.)

Hi, could be a faulty latch. These tend to wear over time. Sound almost like
a faulty intermittent contact spring. YMMV.
My Windows 7 installation has no such problem so I think this is not
contact fault. Is there any file where I can check that system get the
closing event or not? As low level as possible.

It is not settings problem I think as sometimes suspend happens on
first lid closing and sometimes happens on second or more. I did not
found any link between number of closing of lid and running programs.
So the settings are right as suspend happens on closing lid but looks
like OS does not detect the lid closing event sometimes.
