For some reason I am unable to compile anything that uses Qt. It always fails thus:
checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0.3) (library qt-mt)
not found. Please check your installation!
For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log.
Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support!
Now, libqt-mt *does* exist:
[root@starfleet root]# ls /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt*
/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.1
/usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.0 /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3.1.2

So what's the problem?

this library if things need to be linked against these libs. If I check
my FC1 the directory where the qt3 stuff is installed to is
/usr/lib/qt-3.1/ - not /usr/lib/qt3 - and thus /etc/ld.so.conf contains
an entry /usr/lib/qt-3.1/lib to point to the libraries directory.
So if you compile something which need the QT libs and headers be sure
you point there. The QT libs path should be in ld.so.conf. Besides that
you may also need to pass gcc flags like -L/usr/lib/qt-3.1/lib and
-I/usr/lib/qt-3.1/include.

Sorry to be not more helpful with this. as far as I remember I once
needed to run autoconf / automake inside a sources directory to let the
configure script recognize the QT libs and includes. I just can't
remember which application I compiled. The programmer/builder made a
mistake bundling the things. What exactly do you want to compile?

Err... that *WAS* from config.log! And no, it wasn't helpful to me. I can send it to
you if you'd like to look at it.

needed to run autoconf / automake inside a sources directory to let
the configure script recognize the QT libs and includes. I just can't
remember which application I compiled. The programmer/builder made a
mistake bundling the things. What exactly do you want to compile?
That was trying to compile kgpg, but it fails in the same manner with any Qt-dependent
compilation. I can install and run pre-compiled Qt binaries; I just can't compile
them myself.

Call me crazy lucky guy or badly laugh - I downloaded the kgpg source,
untared it, changed to the sources dir, did no export of the KDEDIR as I
am a Gnome user and run ./configure. I got this as relevant part of the
configure run:

I thin your problem is that qt-3.1.x is too new for what you are
trying to compile. You may have to hack one of the config scripts
to allow qt versions >= 3.1.x. It seems what is really looking for
is qt >3.0.3 but <3.1.x

Uhm, did you install qt-devel? The test app can't compile (and thus not
link with qt-mt) if you don't have the Qt headers.
And /usr/lib/qt-3.3/lib should be in you /etc/ld.so.conf file allready
if you installed things correctly.
Basically, if you want to compile your own stuff, make sure you have the
various -develop packages installed as well.

If it is still kgpg you are trying to compile, use following configure
parameters:
kgpg-1.0.0 $ ./configure --with-qt-dir=/usr/lib/qt-3.1
--with-qt-includes=/usr/lib/qt-3.1/include
--with-qt-libraries=/usr/lib/qt-3.1/lib
Be sure you have kdelibs-devel installed too. Maybe you have to set
export KDEDIR=path_to_your_kde_dir
before running configure, like explained here
