I have two Brother laser printers. Not surprisingly the newer one (HL-2170w) prints a test page somewhat darker than the old HL-5140 even with new toner and drum cartridges.
Printing a test page from either one shows the Density set to 0. I assume that setting the density higher puts more toner on the paper and produces darker text however I am unable to find how to change the density setting. There is an item for Density under Print > Advanced, as well as Brightness and Contrast, but they have no perceptible effect that I can see. The printer works as it is but I think it could be better.
Has anyone any thoughts on where to change this? There must be a configuration file somewhere ...
Thanks,
Bob

I don't see anything there I haven't read before unless I am missing it. All I have read from Brother is that Density is set to work with their toner and I should try buying a new cartridge and drum, both of which I have done. The printer is old and there may be other wear factors to consider, but I would like to be able to try setting the Density a little higher.

Sometimes the corona wire ages a bit and doesn't do a great job. That's something you might be able to replace and/or clean it. Back in the day, you could do that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Systems Engineer, AllDigital ricks@alldigital.com - - AIM/Skype: therps2 ICQ: 22643734 Yahoo: origrps2 - - - - Programmers often confuse Halloween and Christmas. - - After all, 31 Oct is the same as 25 Dec! - ----------------------------------------------------------------------

On my Brother printers, the corona wire is part of the drum assembly, so if the OP's is the same, he's already replaced it,... I believe he said in the OP that he had replaced the drum.

I have Samsung printers at home and a big ol' Brother MFC9840CDW at the office. And yeah, the corona wire seems to be embedded in the drum package on all of them. I was sorta grasping at straws trying to help Bob out. Yes the drum ass'y , and therefore the corona wire, is new, bought it a couple of weeks ago. As I said the printer still works and is convenient to use, I am just trying to optimize it for my own needs.
To my surprise I even found a .pdf service manual for it on line at: downloadcenter.mustek.co.za/list.php?dir=Repository%2FPrinters%2FBrother%2FOther%2F&download=ZL2E(HL5100)_SM.pdf
The only information I found about setting the Density was a suggestion from the people I buy the toner from. The guy I spoke to mentioned a Windows menu item with a slider to set lighter/darker. He seemed knowledgeable and said that Density typically can vary between -5 and +5 although it is normally at zero which is what I see on both printers.
That was sufficient to inspire me to install WindowsXP in Virtualbox. I have not gone that beyond that point yet after finding I did not know how to connect WindowsXP to my LAN. It's just another thing to mess with ... I haven't had a Windows set up since RH-5.3.
Thanks for the responses,
Bob

Off topic a bit but would you mind reverting to white background and black text in your emails please. I have difficulty reading your messages thanks Roger

I send "plain text" to the list from Thunderbird. No one else has reported this "problem?"
I do view everything in white text on black since that works best for me. I normally do: Format > Remove All Text Styles before sending, if that somehow failed to happen I apologize.

I have seen this, from time to time, also. I just never mentioned it.

I did find that somehow mail was set to send in both HTML and plain text, probably the result of an update?
However Thunderbird is also configured to send only plain text to this and several other lists which I would hope does what I ask. Even then I usually go to Format at the top and remove the other things I know people object to on this list. If that is not working as I expect then I can only rely on feedback from others and I guess that's what I got from Roger.
I do make an effort to comply with the rules.

Both of my brother printers have a feature called "Toner Saving". If you can find that in the printer setup, you can try changing it.

Yes, I always set that off. I don't use enough toner to worry about economizing there, mainly want a copy my aging eyes can read easily.
