I have been attempting to find a way to migrate from Mozilla to Firefox and Thunderbird. So far, everything has gone pretty well EXCEPT that when I wanted to email a web page from within Firefox, that option was not available. The only choice is to "Send Link". That's acceptable and definitely more friendly for those who are still using dialup connections but the deal breaker for me is that it wants to use Evolution and I don't/won't. I have looked in the prefs.js file, in about:config and in the handful of options available under Edit --> preferences and haven't exactly been inundated with clues. In the Help section, I find this jewel:
Send Link...
Opens an email composition window using your computer's default email program so you can send a message with a link to the current page. This feature is currently only available on Windows, Mac OS X and OS/2.
...which is about as useful as "How may I help you today" on the back of Walmart employees vests.
I tried removing evolution from another machine that I don't mind wrecking and sure enough, evolution didn't try to start. Neither did any other mail client, as in NOP.
Any ideas short of doing a fresh install and specifically omitting evolution?

Have you tried the Preferences->Preferred Applications applet (aka gnome-default-applications-properties)?

Actually, since you are using KDE you don't have the menu items, but iirc, the program gnome-default-applications-properties will do it for you.

You are absolutely correct. I ran that bugger in a terminal right after posting that 2nd "won't work" message and it works like a charm. Thanks a lot.

Yeah; Firefox for Linux is basically a Gnome app....

I s'pose I shouldn't complain. My last bout with Gnome was in RH6.0 but I'd bet Konquerer and Kmail don't behave too nicely in Gnome either.

No, I have not tried that because I don't run gnome. However. if I do a Preferences --> more preferences --> Desktop settings wizard all I get is a (very) abbreviated KDE Control Center. If, in the KDE Control Center, I choose KDE Components --> Component Chooser select Email Client and enter mozilla-thunderbird, it does no good as far as firefox is concerned. Maybe it's time to d/l the source rpm.
Thanks for the response!

The settings can be changed in about:config. I just filtered for "mailto" and changed the two references from evolution to thunderbird.

Hmmm, what version of Firefox are you running? I'm running 1.0 and about:config with the "mailto" filter brings up three items, all of which are boolean values and all start with "network.protocol-handler".
Are you using Gnome or KDE? Mine is KDE 3.3.1. Don't know if that would make a difference for Firefox though.

I'm using xfce at the moment, although I used Gnome until recently. I don't think the environment is relevant. Here are the three settings:
network.protocol-handler.app.mailto user set string /usr/bin/thunderbird
mozex.command.mailer user set string thunderbird mailto:%A?Subject%S&Cc=%C&body=%B
Also,
mozex.intercept.mailto user set true
Since I had previously set these up for evolution, they were already in user set status.
