Is there an option for grep, or some similar program,
that will print out a whole paragraph -
defined as the section between two blank lines -
containing a given word or phrase?
Such as the above 4 lines.
If not, can anyone suggest a simple script that will do this?

sed could do it.
I don't have a recipe on me at the moment.
Try this:
$ sed -e '/[^[:space:]]\+/{H;d}' -e 'x;/<search_string>/!d'
path_to_file.txt
This has the side-effect of adding a newline in the front. You can
partially deal with it by using `1h;1!H' instead of `H' in the first
expression; but it only works if the match is in the 1st paragraph. I
do not think it is possible to deal with it properly in sed.

AIX has grep -p for just this purpose, I wish GNU grep did too.

I don't know about paragraphs, but you do have the -A, -B, and -C options to get
context.
grep -C 3 string file
This will give you three lines before and after lines containing string.

agrep (Approximate Grep, http://www.tgries.de/agrep/) is useful
for that kind of thing.
agrep -d '\n\n' some-word [files...]
agrep is in the Fedora repo (or at least it was as of f15, not
sure about later).

You can use Perl's command line options to clean that up a bit.
$ perl -00 -ne 'print if /green/' para.txt
-00 is the same as $/=""
-n is the same as "while (<>) { YOUR CODE HERE }"
