SPICE benchmark
by Alexey Vasyukov
Hi folks.
We finally finished our work on benchmarking SPICE and would like to share
the results.
Detailed report in English:
http://www.bureausolomatina.ru/sites/default/files/SPICE%20Benchmark%20-%...
The report provides benchmark results of SPICE network load for different
types of workload. SPICE operation on limited low-speed network connection
was also tested. The results were compared with similar tests for RDP.
Testing was based on SPICE version 0.4.3. This version is not the latest one
but it is used currently in RHEV-D 2.2 and also in RHEL6. So, we guess, the
results are pretty useful.
We are going to test SPICE 0.6 in nearest future because it has very
interesting WAN improvements. So, we welcome any comments, critics or
advices.
Best regards,
Alexey Vasyukov

One thing I can say already, I've been unable to get Fedora 14 to start
as a KVM VM with more than one CPU. I'm having to rework my test bed to
use RHEL 6.0 now that it's out and hope that it solves the problem. :)

[PATCH] Move virt-what to a python library
by Bryan Kearney
We discussed this a bit yesterday. I have some python client code which
needs to know "is guest" and optionally the hypervisor type. The
supplied patch uses the same detection logic as the bash script, but
puts it into a python library. The detection logic may be a bit dubious,
but at least this would allow a single place for such logic.

Idle VM is hogging host cpu
by Dennis Jacobfeuerborn
Hi,
I just migrated from Fedora 11 to Fedora 14 (via a fresh install) and so
far everything seems fine kvm seems to have major issues.
After starting one Centos 5 VM qemu-kvm keeps using 20% of the cpu
according to top even though the VM is completely idle. Does anyone have a
clue what might cause this because I wasn't seeing this behavior under
Fedora 11.

Dennis

Re: [fedora-virt] Where is update to Fedora-13 for Qemu-KVM?
by KC8LDO
I'm not going to argue if it was polite or not, and maybe it wasn't I'll
concede. I did in fact get a response which directed me to this mail list,
which I didn't know about. So, I wasn't looking for support as such just an
answer as to where I could find the updated files if they exist if anybody
knew where they were. As I see from Justin's message he hasn't got to them
yet. Now I know about this list thanks to one of the people at Red Hat, who
emailed me with the link, and Justin cleared up why I haven't seen the
updates yet. Thank you to both.
Why I didn't try the Fedora-14 files I outlined in a separate private email
to Justin.

Where is update to Fedora-13 for Qemu-KVM?
by KC8LDO
I've asked on the Fedora mailing list, send email to everybody I could find
at Red Hat etc about this. I got one reply a few weeks ago from a Mr. Justin
Forbes that read in part :
_____________________________________________________________________
It will be in the next update for F13. I mistakinely thought it had made
the 0.12.5 stable release upstream, so did not apply seperately. In the
meantime, there is a workaround, or you can use the F14 qemu from
virt-preview.
Justin

After that I haven't got any further response. Also the update as far as I
can tell has never appeared either.
So the question is where are the updates to fix the boot failure problems
when installing
Windows XP and 2000 in a VM for Fedora-13?

Extra Image Space, how?
by Frank Murphy
As my default image space is almost full
/dev/md0 => 99% Used. Warning. Disk Filling up.
I now want to add empty drives as new image space
/dev/sdc, /dev/sdd (unformatted as yet, 320gb each)
What's the best method, as the host F14 has selinux-enforcing.
And I don't want to make a mess.
Google hasn't helped much for me:

virtio grub support in chroot environment...
by Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
I have a rh el 5.5 host as hypervisor.
I have a guest configured as "rh el 5.4 or later" kvm x86_64 and with
vda as hd0.
Inside this guest I booted with live iso and created partition vda1.
Then I copied inside an rh el 5.5 physical machine data.
Now I start the guest with a f14 rescue iso and try to setup grub to
accomodate start of this p2v obtained environment
Already done in the past with disks configured as hda or sda in guests.
It seems I have a problem now with vda and I would like to ask
suggestions.. probably I'm missing something simple..
my vda disk has also a vda2 partition setup for swap.
/boot is a subdir of / (so inside vda1)
I already setup the new initrd inside the guest, based on a plain
installed vda based rh el 5.5 guest already present...
the problem is with boot loader install into mbr.
after booting guest with f14 x86_64 iso
mkdir /p
mount /dev/vda1 /p
mknod of vda, vda1 and vda2 under /dev of guest (so under /p/dev) based on
brw-r----- 1 root disk 253, 0 Nov 5 11:22 /dev/vda
brw-r----- 1 root disk 253, 1 Sep 27 16:25 /dev/vda1
brw-r----- 1 root disk 253, 2 Sep 27 16:25 /dev/vda2
change of grub.conf and device.map files under /p/boot/grub directory
grub.conf
#boot=/dev/vda
title ....
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz...
initrd /boot/initrd...
device.map
(hd0) /dev/vda
chroot /p
grub --device-map=/boot/grub/device.map
grub> root (hd0,0)
Error 21: Selected disk does not exist
The same without --device-map option
If I use grub-install it successfully completes, but actually my guest
then doesn' t start...
Is there any bug or am I missing something stupid????
Any difference between using this strategy with an sda device and with
a sda one?
On the original host I had a SAN with some volumes and with
/dev/cciss/c0d0 as the hd0..
I think I already clean old information....
BTW:
On host side I have
kvm-83-164.el5_5.21
kmod-kvm-83-164.el5_5.21
kvm-qemu-img-83-164.el5_5.21
etherboot-zroms-5.4.4-13.el5
etherboot-zroms-kvm-5.4.4-13.el5
libvirt-0.6.3-33.el5_5.3
virt-viewer-0.0.2-3.el5
libvirt-python-0.6.3-33.el5_5.3
virt-manager-0.6.1-12.el5
rhn-virtualization-host-5.3.0-17.el5sat
python-virtinst-0.400.3-9.el5
My original physical host, from which I copied the contents to my
guest was a rh el 5.5 x86_64 up2date as of kernel 2.6.18-194.8.1.el5
The env from which I run the iso cd and from which I run the chroot
command is f14 x86_64 netinst
Thanks in advance,
Gianluca

Nope, both in this guest or another guest or in a phtsical one, when I
press the TAB character I get the TAB effect.. cursor moving some
spaces to the right... ;-)
