How about I see if I can get an ITIL dictionary.. they use predefined
definitions for most of these words.. that keeps us in line with other
organizations (*cough* RH *cough*) and also make it an easier drop-in.
I think they go with:
client device [desktop, other server, ipod]
user [ a person who uses the service provided]
customer [ a person who pays for the service provided]
server device [router, laptop running spacewalk, etc]
services [ RHN, HTTPD, cobbler, func, moin, etc]
service owner [ person who has responsibility on the business interest
of a service]
service administrator [ person who has responsibility on the technical
interest of a service]
but I could be confusing it with 20 or so more books I have read over
the last year.
Funny :)
This is unfortunately an overloaded phrase. A client can be an initiator
of a network connection or a managed node". Aka "an XMLRPC client" could
be something the server uses to talk to a "client".
Clients can also host servers, in the case of them running daemons to
allow access by clients (and by clients, I mean servers).
This is why Func choose "overlord" and "minion".

Any machine. Not a meaningful phrase for this reason in most cases.
Also, a carrier of a parasite.

A user who doesn't hack on the code but still uses an application. OR: A
customer of a developer/IT person.

Someone who manages an application or a set of systems, typically with
elevated rights or abilities.

Isn't this already defined somewhere by some other RFC/Spec? No?
