[Bug 2262005] New: Several Nemo Extensions Cause nemo-extensions-list to Segfault
by bugzilla@redhat.com

Summary: Several Nemo Extensions Cause nemo-extensions-list to
Segfault

Target Milestone: ---
Classification: Fedora
I posted the following on github, but this issue may be Fedora-specific (due to
different versions of Python being used):
After the changes introduced in commit f8cae9f nemo-extensions-list segfaults
with "NameError: name '_' is not defined", when any of the following extensions
are installed: nemo-audio-tab nemo-compare nemo-emblems nemo-media-columns
nemo-pastebin nemo-terminal. This appears to be due to the underscore in the
description line toward the end of each extension's [name].py file (which end
up in /usr/share/nemo-python/extensions/ when installed). The segfault happens
when nemo-extensions-list is executed from the command line, and via bringing
up the plugins configuration window through Nemo itself.
An easy fix is to remove the underscore from the offending line of each file
(e.g. description = _("Allows file comparison from the context menu") becomes
description = ("Allows file comparison from the context menu")), which I can
confirm resolves the issue.
I will be attaching patches shortly.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
Execute nemo-extensions-list from the command line, or by bringing up the
plugins configuration window through Nemo itself.
Actual Results:
Segfault, inability to manage extensions for Nemo, and inability to have the
installed Nemo extensions listed.
Expected Results:
To see a list of Nemo extensions that are currently installed and be able to
manage them from within Nemo's plugin configuration window.
This occurs under Fedora 39 (Cinnamon Spin), and may have to do with the Python
version in use (3.12.1). The release of Nemo being used here is 6.0.2, and the
release of the nemo-extensions package is 6.0.1.

[Bug 2183119] New: FTBFS with autoconf 2.72/2.73

Autoconf 2.72 (or 2.73) seems to be under preparation upstream, I therefore
started to build dependent components against the pre-release [1] to verify
that they can be built once it lands in Fedora.
Your component fails to build with the new version of autoconf, due to the
following error:
configure:4837: error: possibly undefined macro:
_AC_SYS_LARGEFILE_TEST_INCLUDES
If this token and others are legitimate, please use m4_pattern_allow.
See the Autoconf documentation.
autoreconf: error: /usr/bin/autoconf failed with exit status: 1
Unfortunately, this can't be fixed with an autoreconf, an update of the files
provided by gnulib are necessary.
These files are usually added during the bootstrap of the source code, which is
done to generate the release tarball.
Please forward this to the community, and update the component accordingly.

Classification: Fedora
The component fails to build with autoconf 2.72 due to its use of Autoconf
internal variables in its configure.ac file.
the following section needs to be adapted (or better removed):
dnl *************************************
dnl *** Checks for large file support ***
dnl *************************************
AC_ARG_ENABLE([largefile],
AC_HELP_STRING([--enable-largefile],
[enable support for large files [[default=yes]]]),,
[enable_largefile="yes"])
[...]
if test "x$ac_cv_sys_file_offset_bits" != "xno"; then
LFS_CFLAGS="$LFS_CFLAGS
-D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=$ac_cv_sys_file_offset_bits"
enable_largefile="yes"
fi
else
LFS_CFLAGS=""
fi
AM_CONDITIONAL(ENABLE_LARGEFILE, test "x$enable_largefile" = "xyes")
The main problem of this section being the check against
`$ac_cv_sys_file_offset_bits` which no longer exists. Leading to further
failures.
AC_SYS_LARGEFILE will define _FILE_OFFSET_BITS if necessary.

For all our attempts to build nemo-extensions with Python 3.13, see:

Testing and mass rebuild of packages is happening in copr.
You can follow these instructions to test locally in mock if your package
builds with Python 3.13:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/g/python/python3.13/
Let us know here if you have any questions.
Python 3.13 is planned to be included in Fedora 41.
To make that update smoother, we're building Fedora packages with all
pre-releases of Python 3.13.
A build failure prevents us from testing all dependent packages (transitive
[Build]Requires),
so if this package is required a lot, it's important for us to get it fixed
soon.
We'd appreciate help from the people who know this package best,
but if you don't want to work on this now, let us know so we can try to work
around it on our side.
