fedora 14 kernel performance with ip forwarding workload
by Jesse Brandeburg
The other day I was running the stock fedora kernel on my ip
forwarding setup, to see what the performance was, and the performance
wasn't very good.
system is S5520HC dual socket 2.93GHz Xeon 5570 (Nehalem) with 3 quad
port 82580 adapters (12 ports). Traffic is bidirectional 64 byte
packets being forwarded and received on each port, basically port to
port routing. I am only using 12 flows currently.
The driver is igb, and I am using an affinity script that lines up
each pair of ports that are forwarding traffic into optimal
configurations for cache locality. I am also disabling
remote_node_defrag_ratio to stop cross node traffic.
With the fedora default kernel from F14 it appears that
CONFIG_NETFILTER=y means that I cannot unload all of netfilter even if
I stop iptables service.
perf showed netfilter being prominent, and removing it gives me much
higher throughput. Is there a reason CONFIG_NETFILTER=y ? Isn't it a
good thing to be able to disable netfilter if you want to?

f15 2.6.39 rebase
by Dave Jones
I've just pushed a f15-2.6.39 branch which contains a work in progress rebase.
The only thing that I'm really concerned about in this right now is X regressions.
We had a drm-next backport to .38 and moving that to .39 turned up a ton of rejects.
I fixed up a few by hand, but the resulting compile failures made my head hurt, so
I've mostly left them disabled. If the nouveau/intel drm dudes could look over
that branch and fix up whatever is necessary, we can look at getting this out
to people soon.
(looking ahead, after its release pushing 3.0.x as 2.6.40 is probably going to
happen, in a shorter timeframe than what took us to get .39 ready)

USB modem driver ID additions to F15 and F14
by Dan Williams
Hi,
I'd like to request the following upstream patches be applied to F15
(and if possible F14) kernels:
(SHAs from linux-2.6.git)
cdacb598fe7ab85de80908c818dd7d66a2971117 option: add Zoom 4597 modem USB IDs
15badbcc8eede58b0d7e53a3acde1c90a7b6e40e option: add Alcatel X200 to sendsetup blacklist
5c3e4076ee8253c1e3688d10653ddee47a03b0db option: add Prolink PH300 modem IDs
7e8e62e4a5d26e4cb45f25dddd093837d75616c2 USB: option Add blacklist for ZTE K3765-Z (19d2:2002)
Simple ID additions and blacklist updates; should be a pretty straight
cherry-pick.
Thanks!

testing 3.0 kernel
by Genes MailLists
I'm testing the 3.0-0.rc3.git5.1.fc16.x86_64 kernel (on F15)
I installed device-mapper*, perf, procps and mdadm from rawhide.
On install it did complain (W) about possible missing firmware for
nouveau and 2 other items (sorry my F15 X session crashed and I lost the
log) - not sure what firmware I should be loading -
xorg-x11-drv-nouveau? What else ?
Testing on sandy bridge laptop.
I see a couple of issues that may be of interest (sorry for text wrap)
regards

[PATCH] Make IPv6 built-in.
by Bill Nottingham
1) It can't be unloaded anyway.
2) If it's a module, it will be loaded at entirely random times, depending
on what sockets a user opens, what functions they call, etc. For example,
'ping6 -?' loads IPv6.
3) Because of its modularity, users attempt to disable it in a variety of
misguided ways, which may or may not work depending on when the module is
loaded.
4) Because of its unpredictability of loading, setting IPv6 sysctls for an
interface becomes complicated. It requires both the presence of the device,
and the presence of the IPv6 module; however, these events aren't tied
together.
By building in IPv6, we solve these issues, and make the behavior of
the system more predictable. Plus, hey, it's the future.
To disable IPv6, boot with:
ipv6.disable_ipv6=1 (to disable IPv6 addresses on all interfaces)
or
ipv6.disable=1 (to render the entire module non-functional)

[PATCH 0/4] utrace for 3.0 kernel
by Oleg Nesterov
Hello.
Utrace patches for 3.0 kernel
0001-ptrace-temporary-revert-the-recent-ptrace-jobctl-re.patch
0002-tracehooks-preparation-for-ptrace-utrace.patch
0003-utrace-core.patch
0004-implement-utrace-ptrace.patch
also available in the following git branch
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/oleg/misc.git utrace-3.0
Note: 1/4 is the temporary hack to keep utrace working, we need to
completely rework ptrace/utrace interaction.
Oleg.
