monitoring open http sessions on a jboss server
by Attila Heidrich
Hi,
is there a way to monitor the open sessions of a jboss server?
I see I have some metrics for the http connector, and the requests per
second value is really useful, but we need some more detailed statistics.
It would be the best to have some browser to select the parameters... ;)
for webapp dveelopers it would be such a great benefit!
Afaik, there're some internal values in the jboss server, should I extend
the JBoss plugin to get a value, which isn't got now?

alert definitions doesn't trigger alert
by Elmar Knipp
Hi,
I configured an alert definitions which should trigger when file systems usage
is more than 80 %. Works fine. (Alarm 1)
I also configured the "opposite" alert, which is triggered when the usage is
below 80 %. Works fine also. (Alarm 2)
Whenever I configure a recovery alarm (e.g. Alarm 2 is the recovery for Alarm
1), the Alarm 1 is not triggered at all, when the condition of Alarm 1 comes true.
This is at least in RHQ 4.9 and 4.10. I know that it has worked before. Did
other users experience this too?
Elmar
P.S.: The definition of values with a % metric has a small bug: If you change
the value, the % sign is in the entry field of the numeric value in addition to
the base unit shown below of the entry field.

RHQ 4.10 available
by Heiko W.Rupp
Hello,
It is my pleasure to announce the release of RHQ 4.10
Biggest changes are
• Reduced agent foot print
• Metric charts have been further improved
• Fine grained bundle permissions
and then this also includes lots of other improvements and bug fixes.
You can find the full release notes at:
https://docs.jboss.org/author/display/RHQ/Release+Notes+4.10
The documentation of the REST-api will be uploaded to SF.net in the next few days - until then,
you can use the 4.9 one, which is still valid.

port check is unsuccesfull, while...
by Attila Heidrich
Hi!
I just try to check if a port is available, or not, but the check always
fails, while using telnet, I can open the same connection (tcp port 5001).
The agent runs on a host machine, the port to be tested is redirected
inside a VirtualBox VM.
I have tried with external IP address of the host, and also with localhost.
Both works with telnet, but unavailable from RHQ.
It is not a standard port, and there's a propiertary service behind the
port - but I just need to check if it's open, or not.

Attila

Load factor
by Elmar Knipp
Hi all,
Is there a metric which is similar to the unix load factor, which you see e.g.
with "uptime" or "top"?
I see "user load" and "system load", but not a combined metric. I want to be
alerted when a system is sweating ;-)
Thanks,
Elmar

migrating storage node data directories
by John Sanda
There are various reasons you might want to migrate your storage node data - improving I/O performance, increasing capacity, or addressing failing hardware. Data can be migrated by adding/removing nodes, but often times it is simpler and more desirable to simply change move the rhq data directory. This can be accomplished, but doing so involves some manual steps which can be error prone.
What do people think about providing support for moving storage node data? I have attached a screenshot of the storage node configuration UI. We currently expose only some heap settings. We could add a section here for the data directory that would list the paths of the commit log, data, and saved caches directories. Changing the location of the data directory would result in the following,
* make sure that the target directory is writable
* update cassandra.yaml with the new directory
* restart the storage node
* run repair as necessary
This encapsulates all of the work involved, making it easy for users to migrate data if/when necessary. Questions, comments, objections?
