getent passwd -s sss username or id username can fetch data from cache, you can never confirm if server is online or offline & where are we fetching data from.
sssctl does a lot more.
AFAIK, There is no plan to bring sssctl in RHEL6, You can build your own packages from source.

Or alternatively, what might be the cheapest/easiest alternative to check functionality such as pam_auth success/deny that sssctl provides? (For executing on a client as a Nagios check, for example).
