#100: Fedoraproject.org banner (not being dynamic) problem

The amber(features & screenshot), green(downloads), pink?(community),
blue(using fedora) and purple(help) color banners at
fedoraproject.org are not big enough/don't automatically expand if the
(translated) string is more than one line. Text is lost when translation
can't be 'one line wide' due to local word length/syntax.
Suggested is 'it depends of your browser, probably because "em" font size
is used and not px' in combination with website design not being dynamic.

[fedora-websites] #246: fedora.css sets a universal scaling factor of 76%, which is much too small

#246: fedora.css sets a universal scaling factor of 76%, which is much too small

fedora.css, which all Fedora websites are encouraged to use, has this
right at the top:
body
{
font-size: 76%;
background: #FFFFFF url(../images/border-left.png) 0 0 repeat-y;
}
It's been there for years, since before the stuff was imported to git, so
its history may be obscure at this point, but Googling around, it looks
like 76% was considered a 'rule' by some so-called authorities at some
point. http://www.sitepoint.com/css-font-sizing-tutorial/ has mention of
it in the comments, http://forums.modx.com/thread/?thread=17583 has some
chatter about it, http://www.baekdal.com/insights/new-minimum-font-size is
from 2005 and cites 76% as the new *minimum* recommended font size, etc.
I think it's pretty unarguably too small for the modern day, though.
Taking the standard 'base size' for browsers - 16px - and using the 96dpi
convention, text at '76%' is 12.16px in size, which is equivalent to 9pt.
How many people do you know who have their desktops set to a 9pt font on a
modern system? Particularly a modern *laptop*. Reading text on Fedora
sites on most systems without zooming or overriding the CSS or setting a
large minimum px size in your browser (which is undesirable for other
reasons) is a pretty tiring experience even for me, and I still have
effectively perfect eyesight for reading text; it must be more or less
impossible for anyone with somewhat less than perfect eyesight.
Yes, this is the thing Felix Miata is always banging on about, but you
know what? Now I spent a day actually looking into this stuff, he's
absolutely damn right. Sorry, Felix. I hope this post was calm and
reasonable enough and brought enough numbers. :)

We are moving towards Fedora 21 Alpha and this time we will have some more
changes on the webpages, although we will '''NOT''' switch to the new
layout for prerelease versions. So, as for the other Alpha releases we
need to:
* Add Alpha banner
* change globalvar.py accordingly
* add checksums
* check DL links
The release schedule actually doesn't have a release date, it's still
''not earlier than August 5th'', so our script for the the upcoming Beta
and GA release dates probably will not work properly.
Remember the images will not be the same as for F20: we will have 3
prodcucts and accordingly we should keep only 3 jquery tabs, without
preferring any product on the main get-prerelease page.
Server WG asked and obtained a different deadline for Alpha release, that
means we need to keep in mind Server will be released later than Cloud and
Workstation.

About Fedora-20 Live download page
by Mariko Ozu
Dear person in charge,
I am writing to let you know how first-time user to the Fedora download is
suffer from inaccurate description of the version in which it misses the
notice that the distribution version might require INTERNET-CONNECTION WHEN
BOOTING, thus I would like to ask you to improve the website so as that any
user can find that information before trying many times of booting in vain
due to lack of the internet connection.
Thanks.
best regards

Maybe it's time to say goodbye to start.fedoraproject.org?
by Elad Alfassa
Hello Websites and Desktop lists.
I think it's time we drop our usage of start.fedoraproject.org as the
default start page for Firefox in Fedora and simply use the firefox
about:home page as the default starting page for the browser.
What do you think?
Generally, the start page was designed to somehow be a gateway for
Fedora to encourage people to participate and contribute. But I'm not
sure if it really works.
Reasons why I think it's time for this page to go:
* We got numerous of complaints about inappropriate planet fedora
posts that appeared there. Having contributor-generated content in the
start page seems like a bad idea in hindsight. Most of the Planet
posts are also not very relevant (or inviting) for people who are not
already part of the community.
* The design is a bit too simplistic, yet since the current design
was introduced nobody had the time/energy/will to think of / implement
anything better. To be frank, it's kinda ugly - and I think I'm
allowed to say this because I'm the one who implemented (and if I
recall correctly, also "designed" it).
* Our "main goal" used to be "gaining contributors" and getting
people involved with the project. While this goal still remains
intact, it's no longer our main driving force (at least for the
Wrokstation product), but rather "build the best OS for software
developers" - as such it would be better if the start page would be
actually *usable* for our target audience. Gaining contributors
remains a goal, but it shouldn't affect our UI/UX decisions.
fwiw it's not the first time I've suggested the removal of this page.
I want input on this from both Desktop and Websites before I file a
bug for the Firefox package to drop this default.
Of course we will have to have start.fedoraproject.org online still
for at least another cycle, because people might still have it as
their homepage (I've seen a few, they don't really look at the page
and just go to the address bar directly).
We could, for example, replace it with some sort of "contributor hub"
page with resources, workflows and practical guides on how to get
involved for new contributors (ie. reuse the start.fpo name, *not* use
a contributor hub as a homepage) but I don't know if anyone has the
time, energy and will to implement and maintain such thing.

We already do that. Also, next time please use "Reply to All" to reply
on-list so other people will see your comment too.
