So I've been working on a start.fpo redesign, after discussing it in this
list (websites), the desktop list, the #fedora-design and #fedora-websites
IRC channels, and (as an experiment) in the Fedora community subreddit.
Using all the feedback I gathered, I present you how I think the page
should look like [0] (forgive my poor inkscape skills that made things not
quite aligned)
Points to remember:
* The search bar is unnecessary: You can use the browser address bar/search
box to search the web. Not having a search bar also removes the conflict of
having a closed source search engine in our official homepage
* Statistics from various bloggers and users suggests people use and like
the planet feed in the homepage, so it's here to stay.
* Announcements are useful, but we will remove devel-announce from the
homepage so not to confuse the average user with developer related stuff.
* Links on how to get help, wiki, and docs should be easy to find, therefor
they gained their place on the right side of the page
* Pandas are great.

I feel like we should do some counting on whether people use the current
search bar before removing it. I agree that it's in theory unnecessary, but
people may actually like and use it.
I think some more color wuold be nice, a la the main
http://fedoraproject.org/ site.

Yeah, and I appreciate that. But I wonder if we can do that while being a
bit less monochromatic?

A concrete suggestion is to make the third column something other than
"Useful links". Maybe break it up into two sections, "Get Help" and
"Join
Fedora"?

the panda links below?
I'm comparing the proposed page to the current start page, and with the
exception of the pandas replacing the big-block-of-links-no-one-will-use at
the bottom, I kinda feel like the original is more friendly and inviting.
And really, I like http://fedoraproject.org/ better than both.
While I'm not totally convinced we need a search field on the new page, the
thing I like about it on the old one is that it tells you what to do, with
a big, bold, visually clear indicator. The new page doesn't have anything
that draws my attention in particular, and so my eyes wander around until
they eventually land on the helpful pandas.
The main Fedora page is rather busy, but the freedom/friends/features/first
logos draw my attention down from the rotating banners, and I eventually
settle on "Need help?" / "About Fedora" / "Join us" -- which
I guess is kind
of what the pandas say too, but they use more words.
What if we took the section of http://fedoraproject.org/ with the "Need
help" bar and "What makes Fedora great?" and made that be the start page,
with nothing at all above it (and no sidebar on the right?). Replace "Fedora
Highlights" with "Fedora News" and put the Planet + Announcements there.
And
then finish with the pandas. See attached html for a rough idea.

One thing you forget is that people who see start.fedoraproject.org have
already installed Fedora, you don't need to convince them it is great. What
you do want is to present them with useful information and updates they
might need. And they will probably choose a different homepage, but

Yes, I like this better. I'd still like to see some more color, and clear,
big blocks for a few key actions. (In the home page or in my mock up, that's
Need Help, About Fedora, and Join Us.)

Hi! Glad to see someone's working on this. :)
Just a quick design tip... When dividing a layout into different sections,
it's often best to use negative space instead of additional elements. For
instance, the mockup at http://i.imgur.com/YLUvp.png uses two grey lines to
separate the three sections. However, some whitespace would be better
suited here and you can see that if you simply remove the lines (
http://i.imgur.com/47NBC.png), the layout stays intact.
If removing the lines would have made the layout fall apart, that could
have been a signal of deeper problems. But in this case all seems fine, so
apparently the page was designed well. :)
Tl;dr - the grey lines can be removed because they are not needed.

We actually still may need to convince them -- they maybe be trying it out
on the live cd, for example. Or at least _remind them_.
We also want to convince people to become more engaged -- to become part of
the Fedora community and to become contributors.

We don't control planet content, so there's nothing we can do about the
fact that they advertise Ubuntu.
That said, if we would have another planet feed which will be
1) Directly related to Fedora/FOSS all the time
2) Only in English
I would be happy to switch to it. But there is no such link, so we can't do
much about it.
What I wonder is, why would a Fedora contributor (you have to be a Fedora
contributor to get your blog in the planet) post about Ubuntu installfests
in Planet Fedora.
