[Fedora-ambassadors-list] Open Source day
by Wassim K.
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Yesterday took place an Open Source day at l'École Nationale des
Sciences de l'Informatique, an engineers school in Manouba (10 km from
Tunis) organized by a Tunisian association DFSA http://www.dfsa.org.tn
After the conferences and theorical debates, we moved to workshops
where I had to present Fedora Core. The guests (almost all students)
had no idea about what Fedora is, and were interested by SuSe and
Mandriva. I could nevertheless convince some of them to assist at the
Fedora Installation.
All was fine along the configuration through the Anaconda GUI till the
last step, then Anaconda crashed with a strange error: The partition
is mounted so the installation will abort. Never happened to me before
and I felt as ridiculous as Bill Gates did when 98 crashed. Very
difficult when the only thing they know about Linux is the penguin.
Anyway, I could quickly restart the procedure and the installation was
without any problem. Later, some students came with their laptops
wanting to install Fedora on their machines; I helped the ones I could
and, it was already 18:15, I promised the others to come back to help
them to install Fedora Core 5 once it's released.
I could "convert" at least 7 people to install Fedora on their
machines, explaining what SE Linux is, how stable, secure,
user-friendly Fedora is, letting them trying different hardware on
Fedora (Digital cameras, MP3 flash, Nokia's), I also explained to
those familiar with old Redhat versions the efficiency of yum instead
of the classical RPM "manual" installation. Newbies liked the Gnome
interface with Blue Curve theme; I promised those who did not like the
idea of substituting MP3 by OGG to install MP3 players and
converters, all the DivX codecs and DVD players if they only dare
install Fedora.
Here was a report of my first activity as Fedora ambassador; next Open
Source day will occure after one month, probably in another
university. All suggestions are welcome so that I contribute to
promote our distribution.
Regards,

[Fedora-ambassadors-list] Getting FC5
by Kirill "REDbyte" Novikov
Hi everyone! We've planning to make a great party to promote new FC5. More
and more users here choose FC for their workstations and servers, so they
would be happy to update their current version. So could we get some DVDs of
FC5 to share it with local community, cause it's totally impossiable to
download DVD image via local ISPs. We've finally finished our web site
linuxcenter.uz - so everyone welcome! Most information is in russian, but
forum is full of people who are ready to communicate in english, german, and
french language. Another news of the community is making a community distro.
Now we're on the step of beta testing.
So what about posting some DVDs of FC5?
Regards,
REDbyte

[Fedora-ambassadors-list] Announcing FUDCon Boston 2006
by Jack Aboutboul
Hot on the heels of the release of Fedora Core 5 and the success of
previous FUDCon events worldwide, the Fedora Project is proud to
announce FUDCon Boston 2006. FUDCon Boston 2006 will offer a wide range
of speakers on an even wider range of topics, in three separate tracks,
and is sure to have something for everyone.
More Info can be found at:
http://www.fedoraproject.org/wiki/FUDCon/FUDConBoston2006
==When==
Friday, 7 April 2006. This is the Friday right after LinuxWorld
Conference and Expo.
==What==
FUDCon Boston 2006 is the fifth such event globally and the second to be
held in Boston, Mass. USA. FUDCon Boston 2006 will feature an expanded
three track lineup which includes a user, developer and applications
track. The application track will feature unique individuals and
corporations, such as Levanta, MySQL, Pogo Linux and even
representatives from the Catalonian Government in Spain, who have
leveraged Fedora for unique purposes and have contributed to the
community.
The complete schedule can be found on the wiki and will be updated to
reflect any time conflicts speaker may have. Please use it as the
definitive timetable for the day's events. Additionally, the wiki will
be updated with more detailed speaker, abstract and room info for each
specific talk.
==Where==
The Fedora Project is honored to be able to work with Boston University
once again to make this FUDCon a reality. The event will be graciously
hosted once again by the BU Office of Information Technology, and this
year, the BU School of Management gets in on the fun.
Also, as last year, we plan on offering streaming video and audio of all
tracks and sessions. This year, these streams will be higher quality
than previous attempts, as we think we've gotten it right this time. The
streams will be Ogg Theora and should work out of the box for users of
Fedora Core 4 and 5. Check the wiki in the coming weeks for links to
the streaming content.
==How==
As spaces are limited we urge all those interested to pre-register by
emailing fudcon-register(a)fedoraproject.org . Those who pre-register
will have badges available for pickup the day of FUDCon and will receive
preference for sessions which may fill up quickly.
==Thanks==
Thanks go out to all who made this possible and have contributed so much
to the massive growth and success of the Fedora community. You know who
you are.
See you in Boston!!

[Fedora-ambassadors-list] FOSS.NITC Report
by Kushal Das
Hi, here is my report on FOSS.NITC event.
FOSS.NITC was held on 18-19 March in Calicut, Kerala (India). This is mainly a
student based event, where they meet with industry people. Students from NIT
Calicut & other local engineering colleges were there.
It was nice to see that NIT Calicut's computer Lab is almost completely based
on Fedora (FC4). The same thing is there in other colleges too. So most of
the students are very much familiar with Fedora :)
My BoF session was mainly attended by students of 1st & 2nd year. They had
lots questions about Fedora. They never previously used yum. I talked about
FC5 features.
One commonly asked question was how to upgrade from FC4 to FC5 (through DVD)
as I was distributing FC4 DVDs.
In the event some people were talking about KDE in Fedora (they don't like the
way it is being packaged), they liked to hear "moving KDE packages into the
Fedora Extras repository". Fedora livecd also rocks.
Some girls were complaining about "No G size tshirts".
The event went good.
Regards,
Kushal
