I completely agree with your thoughts.
Let me know if you need some advice about packaging. However, I'm not a sponsor and
cannot fully review your first package when you will be ready to apply for the packager
group.
That has changed now. Non sponsors can now review and approve packages
from newcomers, but a sponsor still has to do the sponsoring bit. A few
of us here are sponsors, so we'll be able to help with that particular
aspect of the process when needed. Please drop us a ping :)
For our specialist SIGs, I tend to nudge people towards the
co-maintainer path to sponsorship:

As long as the primary maintainer agrees to help the newcomer learn
packaging, we sponsors are happy to sponsor the newcomer.
