ok, pretty sure this is selinux related or sssd/pam handling of selinux related
if I put selinux_provider = none
in my sssd.conf
problem goes away AND my slow logins since the latest sssd version for CentOS was pushed
problem goes away as well
we have
SELinux status: disabled
everywhere/all hosts
any thoughts?

System Error is the default catch-all if SSSD can’t map some internal error onto a more
specific error code. A bit like an unhandled exception. You need to enable the debug logs
as per
https://docs.pagure.org/SSSD.sssd/users/troubleshooting.html and look into the logs
what’s going on.
