Custom PXE templates?
by Brian_Kosick@McAfee.com
Hello All,
I have a quick question that I couldn't find answered in the list already. In my environment I need to boot multiple different types of distro's tree/image/iso etc. One of my image boots has issues with the ipappend 2 (Which works as expected with everything else) line that is added by the default pxeprofile.template file. After doing a dumpvars, I noticed a pxe_template_dir variable and I would like to know if is possible to set profile to use a different pxeprofile.template something like.
cobbler profile edit --name <NAME> --pxe_template /etc/cobbler/pxe/pxeprofile_X.template
I tried editing the pxe_template_dir and got no love.
mkdir /etc/cobbler/pxe/pxe_X
cp pxeprofile.template pxe_X/
edit pxeprofile.template (remove ipappend 2)
cobbler profile edit --name X --pxe_template_dir=/etc/cobbler/pxe/pxe_X
usage: cobbler [options]
cobbler: error: no such option: --pxe_template_dir
Or perhaps I was thinking/wondering something like
LABEL $profile_name
kernel $kernel_path
$menu_label
$append_line
#if $profile != X
ipappend 2
#end if
Thanks,

Hi list,
Is the passthru authentication module still suposed to be working in

Is anyone using that kind of setup?
Thanks in advance.

What kind of server do you have, what is the name of your primary disk.

Subject: partitioning scsi disk
Hello list!!
hey guys.. I am attempting to provision a physical server, and just to get the ball rolling I tried to use the sample.ks file. but unfortunately when I boot the device it is unable to find it's root device and kernel panics. I was wondering if I could get a tip on how to partition a scsi drive.
I haven't as yet resolved the networking issue I was experiencing the other day. But if I use the url --url=$tree option the installation seems to go smoothly. Not sure however why that would work and NFS and an external url wouldn't. Might be a routing issue with the dns server. But as the --url=$tree option is working now I'd like to try and focus on the partitioning aspect I am now experiencing.
Thanks!!

Images
by petermity
I have a few dd images of disks, it would be handy to have PXE
boot menu choices to blast an image to a target.
Reading the documentation, I don't think the Cobbler concept
of images will do what I want. Is there some way to do it,
or some alternate method?

V2.0.11: Undefined variables no longer need to be escaped?
by petermity
I updated Cobbler from V2.0.10 to V2.0.11.
Previously, an unescaped undefined $variable anywhere in a
snippet would cause a snippet to not be included/expanded,
instead it just left the $SNIPPET line in place.
Now, such a snippet is included/expanded, with any unescaped
undefined variables just left alone (e.g. "echo $myvar" in the
snippet remains as "echo $myvar" in the getks output).
Is this intentional? It would seem to mean that I no longer need
to escape variables, for instance bash variables I'm using in
%pre or %post, and that password hashes no longer need $ escaped
or even raw/end raw.

build_reporting_email syntax
by Leonid Flaks
I am trying to configure build_reporting_email in /etc/cobbler/settings
so, that it would mail report to two persons. It works for the first one
only. I tried different syntax ;
[ 'john(a)mycomp.com','mark(a)mycomp.com' ] - did not work.
Using space or ';' would not even get daemon started as it is not YAML
format.
Of course, I can make a mail account and list recipients in aliases, but
there should be easier solution.
Any ideas on how to configure it in settings?
Thanks,
Leon

install url trouble
by Tim Dunphy
hello list!
I am having trouble with the install url portion of the kickstart file. The ks was working in the recent past and honestly I'm not sure what may have changed to break the darn thing.
First is the mirror url I am attempting to use:
## use mirror to install
url --url http://mirror.trouble-free.net/centos/5.6/os/x86_64/
Now if you pump that url into your browser you should see a viable installer location. But this is what happens in the installer:
Welcome to CentOS
+-----------------+ HTTP Setup +------------------+

Please enter the following information:

o the name or IP number of your Web server
o the directory on that server containing
CentOS for your architecture

Web site name: mirror.trouble-free.net_
CentOS directory: /centos/5.6/os/x86_64/__

+----+ +------+
| | OK | | Back | |
+----+ +------+

+-------------------------------------------------+
<Tab>/<Alt-Tab> between elements | <Space> selects | <F12> next screen
Next I tried the NFS media I have used in the past without kickstart.
# Use NFS installation media
nfs --server=192.168.1.250 --dir=/mnt/DVD
Now with this I can type the appropriate command on the command line and have it mount:
[root@LCENT03:~] #mount 192.168.1.250:/mnt/DVD /mnt/DVD
[root@LCENT03:~] #cd /mnt/DVD
[root@LCENT03:/mnt/DVD] #ls
CentOS RELEASE-NOTES-cs RELEASE-NOTES-en_US RELEASE-NOTES-ja RELEASE-NOTES-ro
EULA RELEASE-NOTES-cs.html RELEASE-NOTES-en_US.html RELEASE-NOTES-ja.html RELEASE-NOTES-ro.html
GPL RELEASE-NOTES-de RELEASE-NOTES-es RELEASE-NOTES-nl repodata
images RELEASE-NOTES-de.html RELEASE-NOTES-es.html RELEASE-NOTES-nl.html RPM-GPG-KEY-beta
isolinux RELEASE-NOTES-en RELEASE-NOTES-fr RELEASE-NOTES-pt_BR RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-5
NOTES RELEASE-NOTES-en.html RELEASE-NOTES-fr.html RELEASE-NOTES-pt_BR.html TRANS.TBL
But in the installer this is what happens:
Welcome to CentOS
+----------------------+ NFS Setup +----------------------+

Please enter the following information:

o the name or IP number of your NFS server
o the directory on that server containing
CentOS for your architecture
o optionally, parameters for the NFS mount

NFS server name: 192.168.1.250___________
CentOS directory: /mnt/DVD________________
NFS mount options (optional): ________________________

+----+ +------+
| | OK | | Back | |
+----+ +------+

+---------------------------------------------------------+
<Tab>/<Alt-Tab> between elements | <Space> selects | <F12> next screen
I'd really appreciate it if a fresh set of eyes could help spot the problem and possibly posit a solution.
Thanks!

How to force failure?
by petermity
How can I force a failure on a bad condition, so that "cobbler
profile getks" fails with a traceback (and the actual kickstart
fails, and validateks fails too)?
For instance, I don't want to proceed if some variable is not set:
#if $getVar('myvar','') != ''
# ... do something with $myvar
#else
# Somehow throw an error to abort, e.g.:
#error "The profile must define 'myvar'"
#end if

Re: install url trouble
by Tim Tass
Tim,
Sorry I was looking on my phone and didn't notice the rest of your other reply. The $tree actually normally comes from the distro assigned in your profile.
There are a few ways to create a distro, the first is simply to have a DVD and do an import. This will copy all the files into a http area, create the distro and make a few default profiles. This is the easiest.
The second is manually creating a distro that contains the location of the media.
If you are trying to use http://mirror.trouble-free.net/centos/5.6/os/x86_64 as your final location of the source, then give the
following command a try to edit your $tree for the old profile - to see if that works.
cobbler distro edit --name=<YourCentosDistro> --ksmeta="tree=http://mirror.trouble-free.net/centos/5.6/os/x86_64/"
replace <YourCentosDistro> with the distro you have in assigned in your working profile.
You can make a new distro by copying the current one, prior to running the command above.
cobbler distro copy --name=<oldname> --newname=<newname>
***When you created the system in cobbler did you set it up as DHCP or actually assign it an IP? If you assigned it the ip information the network snippet will actually pass its IP.
Also, have you tried selecting Ok when you get to that screen to see if it proceeds?
Thanks,
-Tim
