Persistent crashes in 'cobbler reposync'

I now think that 'cobbler reposync' has bugs, at least in the github version of the code. Consider these messages which appear in /var/log/messages: Jul 2 14:01:41 cobbler1 python: abrt: detected unhandled Python exception in /usr/bin/yum Jul 2 14:01:41 cobbler1 abrtd: New client connected Jul 2 14:01:41 cobbler1 abrt-server[1851]: Can't create directory '/var/spool/abrt/pyhook-2012-07-02-14:01:41-1823.new': No space left on device Jul 2 14:01:41 cobbler1 abrt-server[1851]: Error creating crash dump /var/spool/abrt/pyhook-2012-07-02-14:01:41-1823.new [not sure if the above are meaningful to this problem, however I started my 'cobbler reposync' at about this time] .... .... Jul 2 16:16:34 cobbler1 python: abrt: detected unhandled Python exception in /usr/bin/cobblerd I am creating the repo under CentOS 6.2 x86_64: [root@cobbler1 ~]# uname -a Linux cobbler1.greenbeltcomputer.biz 2.6.32-220.23.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Jun 18 18:58:52 BST 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux [root@cobbler1 ~]# cat /etc/centos-release CentOS release 6.2 (Final) The cobbler version info: [root@cobbler1 ~]# cobbler version Cobbler 2.3.1 source: 9507694, Wed Jun 27 11:28:11 2012 -0700 build time: Thu Jun 28 21:32:47 2012 It appears that the downloading of packages from the first repo shown below completes fine, then the process stops dead at the first 'createrepo' command. I always see the above 'unhandled Python exception in /usr/bin/cobblerd' messages. Can anyone give me a clue as to why these issues are happening? The problems I am experiencing with cobblerd persist. How can I approach tracking down the problem? Does 'createrepo' need network ports to be opened? Thanks Bob Cochran

Using 'lvresize' vs. 'lvextend' to correct space shortage in /var/www/cobbler

I ran out of space for my cobbler repos in my CentOS 6.2 home for cobbler. Specifically, the default CentOS install allocates only 50 GiB of space for the LVM filesystem /dev/mapper/*/lv_root, which is mounted on /, and I needed more of that. Since /opt comes under this, it was as empty of space as /var. So this meant using lvm commands to resize *lv_root and add space to it. I got into trouble with this unfortunately. Stuart suggested using 'lvextend' and 'lgextend' and perhaps I should have researched that more. Instead, I found this how-to and followed it: http://www.how2centos.com/centos-lvm-resizing-guide/ I robbed 1.2T of space from /dev/vg_cobbler1/lv_home using 'lvresize' and got these messages: lvresize -L -1.2T /dev/vg_cobbler1/lv_home rounding up size to full physical 1.20 TiB .. reducing logical volume lv_home to 577.98 GiB Then tried putting this space into /dev/vg_cobbler1/lv_root: lvresize -L +1.2T /dev/vg_cobbler1/lv_root rounding up size to full physical extent 1.20 TiB Extending logical volume lv_root to 1.25 TiB Insufficient free space: 314573 extents needed but only 314572 available what is this trying to tell me? And how do I fix it? Have I ruined the filesystem(s) at this point? Should I have used 'lvextend' as suggested by Stuart, instead? The story will continue with what I did after this, but I would like to stop here and see what those of you more expert than me think. Thanks Bob

Hi Jörgen, Have been using Michael DeHaan's ansible for a while now, I have changed my outlook towards using HTTPS quite significantly - just like Michael no longer considers the use of SSL in his prior Func project such a great idea anymore. With SSH so widely deployed, and so available to all popular platforms, and the easiness to do SSH port forwarding, for something which usually is used by supposedly IT savvy sysadmins such as the cobbler Web UI, I believe a reasonable and resource frugal approach is just to o Leave the Web UI running on the localhost of the cobbler server host o On port 80 by default o Over HTTP o Use iptables (and if so desire, SELinux too) to protect the node so that it's hard to crack in. But leave a desired port open such that SSH port forwarding is feasible. Viola, no need to install OpenSSL, no need to mess around Web server configuration files. Just a simple ssh -L local_port:localhost:remote_port username@cobbler_host where local_port is what you wish to use on your local machine, localhost is the localhost of the cobbler server node remote_port is the HTTP port used by the cobbler server node (e.g. 80) and then you can point your browser to your workstation's localhost:local_port/cobbler_web With your $HOME/.ssh/config slightly edited, the above can be transparent. Just a suggestion. outgoing firewall rules for reposync?

I'm going to move my cobbler server (RHEL6.3, cobbler 2.2.2) to a network that has default deny on outbound connections. We are configured to use the following repos: rhn://rhel-x86_64-workstation-6 rhn://rhel-x86_64-workstation-optional-6 rhn://rhel-x86_64-workstation-supplementary-6 >From our tests running reposync on our open network, it seems that reposync, by default, uses the Akamai CDN. I imagine this would make things very complicated for our firewall, since we can't allow by DNS (only by IP). How would you suggest I handle this? Allow an entire Akamai subnet (though i don't know how to determine which subnet)? Configure yum somehow? Ideally I'd like to use an HTTP proxy but right now we don't have one available to us. I noticed that, at least for up2date, RHN allows one to disable "Location-aware updates", see: https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/node/53075 but I'm not sure if this would affect how reposync operates. Hi James, Many thanks! That did the trick. Will move to 2.2.3 as soon as possible. Why it is still not in EPEL yet? Another question about 'cobbler reposync'

Thanks to much help from you great people, my 'cobbler reposync' started progressing well...until now, it seems stalled at this point: running: createrepo -g repodata/42ec1be1745e71753d57892fefff57fc16d98541662637e1a8f2c0b2f18870f6-comps-f17.xml --deltas -c cache -s sha /var/www/cobbler/repo_mirror/f17-x86_64-everything 13/27033 - Packages/q/qalculreamer-devel-0.10.2-1.fc17.i686.rpm Does it just take a long time for the above step to complete or is it stuck on qalculreamer-devel? I would love to see it progress from package 13/27033 to package 27033/27033! Thanks Bob Cochran
