playing with xen...
by Rui Miguel Silva Seabra
Hi,
I've been trying out xen... some info that might (or not) be useful:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf got rewritten.
Now, I'm not using rhgb.
My xen environment is, basically, booting into run level 3 (to reduce
complexity), and trying to test it, so there's no X anywhere.
When I finish being frustrated for not having net yet (must be some
quirk between xen and natsemi or something it depends on) I reboot to
get my default desktop.
A script running on 5 moves /lib/tls.disabled back into /lib/tls
Since xen is starting to be integrated, I understand there are weird
things until the kernel can stabilise, but the xorg.conf file being
rewritten puzzles me.
Regards, Rui

Alien Night vs ksh (was: rawhide report: 20050121 changes)
by Dax Kelson
> Removed package ytalk
This is a shame. On a multi-user boxes communicating at the command line
via ytalk is the way to go. Much much better than regular "talk".
> Removed package pdksh
We have a large tutorial that introduces and explorers the features of
various shells that includes coverage of pdksh. I also know of quite a
few gray beards that swear by ksh.
Having ksh or a ksh clone has pretty much been a given on any Unix or
Linux box for a couple decades now. Breaking this expected behavior now
would be extremely unfortunate. Doesn't seem worth it save ~350kb.
If you want to save 350kb, then pick one of the following and ditch it
instead:
/usr/share/wallpapers/alien-night.jpg
/usr/share/wallpapers/kiagara.jpg
/usr/share/wallpapers/Island-of-Elba.jpg
20 years of tradition or alien night?
When brining it back, please consider replacing pdksh with the official
ksh?

FTP-Download of the FC3 DVD-ISO with firefox
by Joachim Backes
Hi,
did somebody already try to download the DVD iso of FC3, using firefox
or mozilla for downloading? The problem is that during the download,
(before download is almost done), suddenly the browsers show weird
sizes of the from-file (mixed with minus signs).
on the other hand, wget runs perfectly.
I can reproduce this behaviour under FC3 itself (mozilla/firefox,
started in WinXP, show a similar behaviour).

environment (/etc/profile) and X
by Jonathan Underwood
Dear All,
Firstly apologies if there is already perceived wisdom on this matter,
and I've missed it despite googling fairly extensively.
I recently noticed that in FC3 in a gnome-terminal or xterm that the
delete key didn't work and just produced a tilde. Having checked that
the correct escape string was being returned, I realised that it was
because /etc/inputrc was not being read and so readline wasn't set up
correctly in bash, and that the reason for this is because INPUTRC is
set in /etc/profile which is never read one one launches a terminal from
within X as these start a non login shell ... it's really a
manifestation of the fact that logging in via xdm/gdm/kdm starts a
session which never invokes a login shell, and so /etc/profile is never
read - opening a terminal in Gnome etc starts an interactive non-login
shell and so /etc/bashrc and $HOME/.bashrc are read but not /etc/profile
or $HOME/.bash_profile. At least that's my understanding.
Googling around a bit, this situation has quite a history, and there was
even a time when /etc/profile was even sourced twice at login. This has
been discussed at length lately by debian people here:
http://tinyurl.com/6mlw8
http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&threadm=27Sa...
I myself am unsure about what the right way to deal with this is, but my
feeling is that at somepoint during login, the appropriate shell login
file should be read i.e. /etc/profile for bash.
Thoughts?
Jonathan.

Power off
by Tyler Larson
I ran into a problem (bug?) that I would like to help solve, but I'm at
a loss as to where to go next. My laptop (Dell C400) used to run Linux
just fine, dual boot with Windows. In the past few months, I've
installed XP SP2 on the Windows side, reinstalled Windows a few times
(it happens), and updated by BIOS image. I somehow managed to trash my
partition table attempting to put GRUB back as my bootloader, then had
to reinstall everything all over again (windows and Linux). I've since
downgraded the BIOS to the previous known-good version to try and fix
the thing. Windows works fine, but on the Linux side....
The computer powers itself off without warning--no matter what is, or
isn't, running. Certain things seem to trigger it, and it may be tied to
high CPU load. I can trigger the shutdown fairly reliably by running
aircrack on a packet capture file. To rule out any background services
as being the culprit, I booted with init=/bin/bash, ran aircrack, and
sure enough, it powered off after about 90 seconds. This behavior has
continued no matter what kernel I use--I'ved tried with both the
original FC3 kernel and the most recent one. In fact, the machine
powered itself down a number of times while I was running off the
install CD. It took 10 tries before I got it to complete the install
process.
So, my question to you all is--how can I possibly get some useful
information to start diagnosing this problem? There's nothing in the
logs on disk, of course. There's no warning, no panic, no nothing. Just
a quick *plink* and it's gone.

I think that it's easiest to pick the core packages
that to select it one by one to be in extras.
the right question is: *What's CORE* ?

Fedora Core 4
by Bill Nottingham
A Fedora Core 4 proto-schedule is available at:
http://fedora.redhat.com/participate/schedule/
Generally, it's 3 4-week test releases, with a release in early/mid May.
So, what's planned for Fedora Core 4? Here's what we're looking
at from the Red Hat side of things:
- GCC 4, if it's ready
We're not planning on holding for it, but if it's out in a
reasonable time, sure. Failing that, we're looking at making
more of the FORTIFY_SOURCE and other gcc & glibc security extensions
integrated, if at all possible.
- The usual new stuff - GNOME 2.10, KDE 3.4, Xorg 6.8.2,
OpenOffice 2.0 (maybe), etc.
- Xen and Virtualization
This starts by integrating the Xen kernel stuff, and going
from there.
- SELinux Episode III: Revenge of the AVC
Yet more targets in the targeted policy.
- Faster boot
Eliminating redundancy and old cruft in the bootup process,
starting GDM early if possible, using newer and faster
udev codebases, and other related tweaks.
- Java
More native-compiled GCJ stuff. Including Eclipse.
- Package management
GUI integration of system-config-packages, yum, and friends.
- more networking changes
Further integration of NetworkManager
- PPC support
For your brand spanking new MiniMac, or the p655 under your
desk.
- Extras at launch time. Or else.
Hopefully, self explanatory. Could coincide with the move
of some bits from Core to Extras. In fact, some of the
stuff on this list of features may *be* in Extras.
Probably other stuff that I'm forgetting in here. I'm sure
more people can remind me.
