What about Upstart? (was Re: Speeding up boot time)
by Keith G
I too agree that python should not become a requirement of a linux system,
by making it integral to bootup.
There are however other new bootup systems that look promising and don't
require python. One that caught my eye is Upstart. It's a replacement for
systemvinit which runs the existing startup scripts in parallel (where
possible). They also have plans to develop new startup scripts more
suitable to such a system in the long run. I don't have the technical
knowledge yet to know if this is really desirable in Fedora or not, but it
seems worth considering.
Here are the articles I've been reading:
http://www.netsplit.com/blog/articles/2006/08/26/upstart-in-universe
http://www.netsplit.com/blog/articles/2006/09/01/upstart-can-now-replace-...
What do others think?

My rawhide install does not see my thumb drive either. If I leave it
plugged in during boot the system does not see it. To use it I have to
unplug it and plug it in. I opened
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=204396 on August 28th
but so far no solution.
Try booting with your drive plugged in and watch dmesg for:
libusual: modprobe for usb-storage succeeded, but module is not present
If you see this add yourself to the above bug.
Thanks,
Jason

Then the BIOS is broken, complain to the BIOS vendor?

Realtek RTL8111B fc6 problems
by Gianluca Cecchi
hello,
I have an asus p5b-vm mainboard with an onboard pci-express card as in subject.
I tried 1.02 and 1.04 drivers from realtek, compiling against fc
kernels, but nothing changes.
I' have used various kernels also after fc6-test3 but with all of them
the network is very slow.
I tried connecting to a dsl modem network port and also to another
linux pc but nothing changes.
Kernel module compiles (with community suggested changes) and network
comes up but with awful performances.
I think it could depend on duplex or other similar settings based on
autonegotiation, but it seems that module documentation is not correct
about passing arguments for loading....
Anyone using these ethernet cards successfully?
Is it in list to include the r1000 driver inside the official/fc kernels?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Bye,
Gianluca

Fedora Core 6 release date slip
by Jesse Keating
We regret to announce a slip of the Fedora Core 6 release schedule. A few
issues are still present that we would like to see fixed before we release.
- Possible ext3 corruption bug
- Installs with 256megs of ram stall
- Package ordering issues on multilib platforms (x86_64, ppc64)
- SELinux issue with updating kernels on ppc platforms
- iscsi based installations not functional
There are obviously other issues and bugs still open, but these are the ones
that are really "blocking" the release. To give enough time to fix these
issues, we've extended the release date 6 days to Tuesday, Oct 17th. Freezes
are still in place (even more so now). Your extra careful testing of rawhide
over the next few days would greatly be appreciated.
Keep an eye on http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Core/Schedule for any changes.

package selection
by e11321@comcast.net
The other day I was showing someone all the software packages that are available and we had to wade through all the library and command line stuff to get to the GUI apps that I thought he might be interested in. It would be useful if packages were tagged somehow as gui, library, cmd_line_app/tool etc so that non-gui packages could be easily filtered out by package selection tools. For that matter, I might also just want to look at command line tools or libraries (for whatever reason). It would be nice if this was brain ded easy.
